Harley quoted me 4 hours to install heated grips. I did it myself following this very video. Took me 6 hours but I took my time to make sure I didn't end up with any "extra" parts when I was done. Bought myself an ignition alignment tool to avoid issues there. Grips work great.

I have spun my ignition switch and had to have dealer realign, so your mention of the importance of not misaligning and the small brake switch that could break is so important and you are spot on for those small but important details.
@talkradio5031
@talkradio5031 7 жыл бұрын
I don't think that the small brake switch is as delicate and prone to breakage as the earlier years were. I put chrome levers on and ( after a KZfaq ) remember them as going right on without having to use the small piece of cardboard any longer. Videos like this have to be impacting business at the dealers!

Hiya Shawn, thank you for this super install video. I’m not sure if you get notifications on historic videos but if you do I just wanted to tell you that my new 2020 SGS arrives this week. I’ve been researching for months to help me decide wether to go for a sport glide or a street glide and the SGS won.....in Scorched orange and silver flux. You’ve helped plenty with my homework on this Shawn so I just wanted to thank you and I will definitely be doing this install. All the best and thank you. Kind regards Beans.

Hi Shawn, did this yesterday and.... you glossed over how much fiddling it takes to put the ignition back in, took me about 30mins just jiggling it about :) other than that worked good, i ran a fish up the bar from the centre hole and pulled the wires through with that. Thanks, oh and we have the same bike again!! traded in the denim black sgs for the M8 hot rod red in September but didnt get delivery until January here in Scotland.

Thanks, that’s a great video!!! The paper instructions had me scratching my head! Can you clarify, the extra wires that come with the grips, are those to extend the wire reach for taller bars?
@ShawnSmoak
@ShawnSmoak 5 жыл бұрын
That's an adapter harness to run back to the battery for models that don't had the pre-wired harness in the fairing, which also requires the Harley Heated Grips Connection Kit 69201599... If you had tall enough bars, this could be an option I'm assuming..? Thanks Zach!

Shawn seeing as I live in the Great White North I will probably install this kit on my new bike. Watching your video I think I am going to try it with just tilting the fairing forward and leaving the ignition in and just loosen the little cover below the key by removing the two screws so it can slide back a tad and wiggle around if needed. Worth a try anyways.

I have a 2015 Street Glide and I just put heated grips on my bike this winter. The kit I got makes me run the power on the outside. It would of been nice to know there was another kit where the power was going inside the bars instead of the outside. I also see that Harley updated the wiring because on my bike there is no power running up to the fairing so you can simply plug and play. I had to take my gas tank off and run the power cable it the management cable tray underneath. Your job was much easier than mine. Mine took multiple hours ha.

Hello Shawn, I'm curious about the 17 SGS and more specifically, tire/wheel size "upgraded" I spec'ed out my vision of my street glide with a 19" front/18" back wheel package I built on-line at Harley/Davidson. I looks perfect for my idea of the perfect Harley, yet my question is do I automatically get the proper upsized tires when I upgrade the wheels? Thanks for the info and great website!
@ShawnSmoak
@ShawnSmoak 7 жыл бұрын
+E. Simons - If the bike comes to the dealership as you customized it online, I'd say yes, for sure it would. However, if the dealer does the mods once the bike arrives, you'd need to speak with the dealer to see if they'll exchange the OEM tires for the ones required for the custom wheels. I know the wheels will not come with tires if ordered separately... Thank you very much!

NIce job, I know it adds a hassle if you need to get back in there again but I'd be tempted to shrink wrap every connection and esp. heated grips which always make me a little nervous.... just having the heated gear on board makes me nervous. Maybe shrink would make it worse, trapping the heat, I dunno. New stuff is all built properly though, I hafta admit, and I expect this fear of mine will pass with experience and time. I worked and have lived aboard ship a long time and once as an SR tech we rescued a fella whose liveaboard was fully involved... in 10 minutes that man was going to be in the water and dead in another 10 after that from the cold up here in BC. I'll never forget the way that ship burned... About the appearance of 'more chrome' on your red 'Glide, between a black bike and a red bike with same amount of chrome, the red bike will always 'appear' to have more chrome because the black bike's other black surfaces, frame, motor pieces, link together and take over the 'weighting' that our brain unconsciously gives what we're looking at. It's why black bikes can often appear 'cleaner' - they've one less 'colour'. Just like a B&W photograph, you're only looking at shades, not the tones that exist in true colours.

Shawn... not telling you how to do it because I realize as a bike mechanic you know far more than me but I found out when I replaced the heated grips on my Limited..If you take the screws out that hold your switch panel on. You don't have to take the key switch off . There is enough room to slide it backwards and unplug it and take it off.

@@ShawnSmoak I went on a couple hour ride a few days ago through very cold weather. Started out with the heated grips on the number 2 setting. Had to lower it to 1. They worked like a charm. Thank you.

So, I thought I noticed your old Street Glide had slip ons on it?.... You planning on doing any stage 1 and slip ons for this one?

I’ve heard they are, but haven’t verified this myself. I can’t imagine Harley doing it for the SG and not for the RG as well... Thanks for watching!

I bet your right about dealers charging 3 hours labor at $110 an hour what's said with flat rate is the mechanics probably only get between 18-25 per flat rate hour.

Do you have to do all that if you have heated grips already and just want to change the grips to new heated ones? 14 ultra cvo

Unfortunately, the heating elements are built into the grips, so yes you do... It’s way easier than it looks! Thanks Gregg!!
