you should have bolted the mounts to the frame first and then lowered the engine onto them because the you would only have to line up one bolt.

For the easy job gone wrong, nothing beats the XJ leaf springs. It must be the only part on the jeep that can take 2 days to get off, and about 25 minutes to put in the new ones. I had torches, and pickle forks, and impact guns, and wrenches, and oils, and everything just laying every where when I finally got those things out. Its the XJ equivalent of impacted wisdom teeth.

Totally. However, I found it became way easier to get the bolts out when I alternated loosening between the front and back of the second leaf spring. The first one took a day. The second one took less than 2 hours. I would loosen the front bolt a few turns, then loosen the back upper shackle bolt a few times. I think it took out some pressure from twist and allowed the bolts to move more freely. Then they popped out rather easily when they were both loose, using a vice grip to grab the bolt and a hammer to pound the vice grip outward.

Hey Matt, I'm sure the flexible unibody has its influence on alignment. Great job overcoming the issue. When I installed my Rubicon Express lift I fought with the leafspring bolt/bushings. Because I didn't have a helper I was forced to fight with it for a day and a half by myself. I was determined not to take the leafsprings to a local garage. I beat the bolt head with a large hammer, Lots of PB Blaster and pipe cheater on my 1/2 ratchet with the breaker bar ziptied to the leaf spring. The rubber bushing sleeve was rusted to the bolt something awful. I finally won! Whew what a battle! Keep the faith, your videos help me alot. Thanks, Michael

Just replaced engine mounts on my 95 Cherokee and referenced part of this video for help. Of course it took longer than the internet said it would. The funny thing is that I watched only the first part of your video to see if there were any tricks to getting the through bolt out. That was the biggest pain in the rear for me. There is a sweet spot to getting just enough load off the mount to get the bolt out, but not jacking the engine up too much which applies force in the opposite direction. That bolt will not move until you get that balance figured out. As far as putting in the other nuts and bolts, that was the easiest part. My experience was completely backwards from yours, you got the through bolt out without much persuasion, but had some real challenges installing the other nuts and bolts. Funny how things work out. Thanks for uploading the video, it did help me out while doing this job.

This the only video I have found of yours that I would recommend people don't follow. Instead of the ratchet strap or transfer case jacking, loosen the transmission mount bolts. It will free up a ton of wiggle room in the powertrain. Would have made it a whole lot easier.

I had better luck by loosely securing the two nuts. Then, the hole through the bushing was aligned with a punch and the long bolt, while raising and lowering the jack until it aligned properly. Torqued all fasteners before moving to the other side. It's good to know I don't have to remove the oil filter adapter. I'm working on the passenger side of my 87 Comanche now.

gald to see im not the only one to fight these mounts. i got one done and going to tackle the other one this weekend. i would like to added one little tip that i fought with before taking the mount apart and trying to just install the bushing to try and find out why the holes would line up. which is. jeep left access metal on the motor fork side so my tip is to dremel off that leftover metal so your mount will line up. or you could cut the bushing down if one so chooses. thanks for your tip on jacking up the tcase to try and bring the motor forward. i thought a racht strap as well with no luck. thanks for your videos i really like the one on the taraflex low kit it gaves me confidence in opening my tcase. keep the videos coming.

That was a deciding factor on weather too keep it or not. :(

I replaced the engine and transmission mounts on my 96 XJ. found it easiest was to remove bolts from transmission mount lift on the engine with a hoist and then was able to move the body around (just wiggle it) front to back shake side to side jump up and down on it and just like Matt put a nut or bolt on it as they line up.

I’ve had one of the threaded bosses on the engine block on my WJ 4.0 broken. Another one was stripped out. I had one good bolt hole to work with. I figured I’d just use two other holes that were a bit further away and remake the bracket that bolts to the engine, but those holes were a funky 9mm size, so there weren’t any bolts to go in those. I had to tilt the engine in the Jeep such that I could get a drill in there to drill and tap the holes to 10mm to match the rest. Gah. Such a nightmare, that was.

I've done performance motor mount replacements in both my TJ and XJ and it never goes well. So the problems Matt experienced are pretty normal. There really isn't a better option unfortunately as the stock "vibration dampeners" are not up to the task in wheeling environments. The job just sucks and nothing will line up easy. So plan to have problems and plan to have some help.

After I got home I realized I needed a 22mm socket for the new bolts so back to the store I go to buy a socket. It was one of those days.....

Maybe the bolt holes in the mounts were in the wrong place. Should have compared with the stock mounts. If they were wrong, you could have filled and drilled them in the right place. Moving the engine forward - and the fan closer to the radiator - is not usually a good idea.

They really need to bring back the jeep xj. Unbelievable they ever stopped production on them. I think it’s only because they lasted too long and auto manufacturers can’t have that. 4.0HO motors are one of the last great motors in terms of ownership and maintenance. Still easy to pop the hood and get to about everything.

When pulling the motor on a few jeeps I have had the worst time getting the top two inverted torx head bolts off. I could never find the right socket set for them so I would do everything to get them off with 3/8 in and 10 mil sockets. finally found what I needed at harbor freight oddly enough and now I can get them off but they still suck. I purchase different hardware to replace them with so I never have to deal with them again once out. I have also completed 6 lifts for myself and friends and have always had to cut at least one of the leaf springs off the front bushing. bolt is always rusted to the inner bushing sleeve. grrrrr.

This might seem dumb as hell but I was just changing my oil and after I put the new oil in I was just going to let the jeep idle for a half hour and when I went into the front to make shore everything was fine I saw that one of the injectors was leaking gas so turned off the jeep and had to take the new injectors that were put on their about 3 months before just to find out that the O-ring had cracked. the worst part is I had to wait till the next day to get the new O-rings due to all the auto part stores that were near me were close at the time.

Never did this before, not a mechanic, got it done in less than 2 hours. My 2 cents: do not use a jack, get a 1 ton (minimum)shop crane and 2 ton lift straps. This way you can wiggle this shiit without it falling. Also do drivers side first, do not undo both sides at once. Use a good prybar to get that mount to shimmy into the frame hole. Shop crane makes this a fast and easy job actually

Boy do I have a story... So I bought my 93 YJ that's got a 4.6 stroker, SM420 transmission and a NP235 transfer case, ran strong and everything, drove it home and it overheated real bad on the freeway and developed a real bad knock, sounds exactly like a rod knock and lost all oil pressure so I pulled the oil pan, replaced the oil pump, inspected everything, plasti guaged the rod bearings and they were all within spec and looked brand new. Then I replaced them just because I was in there, of course plasti guaged them again and they were perfect. After that I did the timing chain, then after that I fixed the overheating issues with a new radiator (old one was filled with sand) new water pump, etc. after that I decided to drive it for awhile on the knock and figure it out, ran fine still had a ton of power.. Then the throwout bearing went bad, replaced that then when I put the clutch assembly all back together I couldn't get any pressure in the hydraulic system..

Turns out my master and slave cylinder went bad at the same time, replaced both of those then when I was priming it and bleeding it and finally getting pressure the hose blew, replaced it but after bleeding and draining the system for about a week I noticed Oreily screwed up and gave me fuel line so I just couldn't get any pressure, so I hardlined the whole clutch and boom! All good.. Then I moved back to the knock and replaced all the lifters, they were looking a little worn. Replaced them now I have like no power, it's misfiring, and STILL knocking. It's just wonderful... So I'm swapping in a 305 and 700r4 and NP205 I have laying around in there.

+Spearfisher1970 don't get me wrong they're great motors but that's of course if you do it right and use quality parts. Neither of which I think the previous owner did.. But it had pretty bitchin power haha low end torque was sorta mind bottling, turning all 4 in the rocks just idling in 1st

I was looking at getting the brown dog mounts, but honestly without all the access you had I'm not sure its a smart idea.

+mamefreak3 I dont know if Cherokee mounts are more buried by stuff than a TJ, but the mounts on my TJ werent bad to do with everything installed. The hardest part for me was doing it myself; trying to realign the motor back to get the new mounts to go in the bolt holes.

+Maverick Xeo Also, mine has motor mount lift blocks too, so that made things harder to line up too.

+Maverick Xeo My install would also be on my TJ, guess ill have to give it a shot and find out

+mamefreak3 It does really look intimidating, but the work is pretty easy. Make sure to loosen your transmission mount bolts too (the four on the skid plate), this helps allow the motor to move a little more. Having someone help is pretty important too. After I did my mounts by myself once, I had help the second time and it was LOADS easier.

Well I don't own a jeep, but I was working on my 1969 f100. I went to my brothers house for help with my leaky intake manifold. I decided Id try to fix my rear main seal with some seal conditioner. bad idea lol. I was stuck at his house for a week because it softened the seal and it broke. And neither one of us had ever done a rear main seal. lol. Needless to say it still leaks 😂.

Damn i did the one side by Air box and said fuck it and grinded the mount shackle to align with mount. Because it was not bolting on right. But nice to see they would have worked otherwise.

Ball joints were one of the biggest pain in the ass jobs I’ve done on my jeep. After doing my mounts, i cant believe shops get away with charging as much as they do around here. $800 for all 3 mounts.

Have to laugh seeing this vid and the new and improved part not lining up; might have been a problem lining up because the engine was lifted on the one side. But what I'd like to see is a vid showing how to do this procedure Without jacking the engine up via the bottom of the oil pan, (crushing the gaskets in the process).
