The old front porch wooden columns were rotted. New columns that are both structural and decorative have arrived. With the porch roof jacked up, the apprentices locate the position of the new columns. Under Tom Silva’s guidance, they cut the columns and slide them into place.

I just installed three of those exact fiberglass columns on my house. I didn’t have a bottle jack so I used a car jack; I used a portaband to cut the columns and a piping wrap around to make a circular mark on the column as a reference mark; I footed my columns on pvc sheets. It went very smoothly.

The colum should be anchored first before screwing the base, otherwise wind, tornado, hurricane etc. Will blow that column out.

I’m curious as to why you didn’t flash the top cap? I did this same project about 4 years ago using the same columns and was advised to flash the top cap. I also caulked around the bottom base but your reasoning to not caulk it leaves me questioning my process. I always learn something new. Thanks.

Ron, I just installed 2 of these on my grandparents' house that my brother owns and is updating....I flashed the top to cover the hole and the fact that I used a piece of 1/8" stainless steel makes me feel better if nothing else but I'm thinking that it may help structurally in some small way 🤔

I am curious, if you have a “synthetic” deck board would you still need to put in a membrane at the base or could that cause issues down the road?

Am I able to use the old column as the height measurement if I'm using the same style with the new column? (I assume yes)
@joaquinsuarez6090

If you first make sure that ceiling is 100% level, then yes. If not level, need to cut it longer. Also, seen some guy when using treated wood to cut it about 1/4 longer for future wood shrinkage.

Wow. This is really great instruction for someone who’s already very seasoned with carpentry but it’s not even the slightest help to a person who’s wanting to actually learn how to install the support columns themselves which is a fair description of myself. No help to me. Probably great for someone else who almost knows what they’re doing. I need support columns install for dummies

Ok BOB! What about when you have to replace the decking in the future. You should do all structural work FIRST! Then the decking. Then the Decorative work last. Structural beams should NEVER be installed on top of the decking. Decking does not last forever. And when it gets replaced you should not have to jack up the STRUCTURE just to repair or replace your decking!!!

@GDanielCho 4 жыл бұрын
rolf sinkgraven slim chance if it getting in contact with moisture. Same concept with a roof, the plywood is left unpainted but the singles will prevent the plywood coming in contact with water. The column was caulked all the way around and its under the roof which had mitigation for water so the only water that could get on it would be from rain and wind but the caulk is enough

@Uncle-Bull
@Uncle-Bull 4 жыл бұрын
Colin Bollinger I’ve never tried it that way. I’d rather have the lumber slip and fall, than a heavy jack. Then you have the problem of needing a ladder to reach the handle for the jack.
