Sorry, not a fan of your method. Wayyy too complicated and creates 'make work'. I've been doing trim work for 50+ years. While using a miter saw is the preferred tool to use... normally, a 30º clip at the end. Another method is to round the end, using a disc sander or, if you don't have one, use a wood file/rasp and orbital or quarter sheet sander. I've done MANY jobs where the client liked a rounded end of the shoe. Technically... you use base 'shoe', NOT quarter round in this application.

All the people saying shoe moulding is better... in my case it is not. My home is a 1980s townhouse and the entire home has quarter round on the baseboards. I needed to replace some baseboards after a water damage incident, and in order to match the style of the rest of the house, I used quarter round to finish the job. So yes, maybe shoe moulding looks better, but it's not the only option and in my case not the most appropriate option-- for continuity's sake. Anyway, thank you for this video, it helped me greatly.

3:26 - A nice idea for certain situations surely, but I'm not loving the gap it creates between the top and the next vertically oriented piece. Maybe change the backwards-turning joint to a downwards-turning one to preserve the straight up and down edge?

Having been a remodeler since the early '70s..here's how I would have handled this one. On the right side: continue the quarter round beyond the vertical trim by undercutting the back side to ride over the trim. Go past by the amount of the thickness of the q.r. plus another quarter inch. Then use the tool to create the return. Since the q.r. is thicker than the trim it cant just die into it. On the left side: don't stop short of the adjacent stair trim and leave the gap. Since the q.r. thickness looks to match the thickness of the stair trim, continue on to the stair trim a sufficient amount to get one nail into it and then enough to round it off with the pliers cut. Btw..thats a handy tool. I made hundreds of miter cuts doing a circular stairway raised panel effect all with an upscale- but hand operated- miter box. Ugh!

Ok, this should have the caveat of “for paint grade only”. In my opinion a back cut of 30 degrees looks better than that mashed miter. Not to sound snobby, proper application is base shoe, it’s 7/16x9/16 similar look but doesn’t stick out as far as quarter round. Pvc base shoe would probably cut way cleaner with your hand shears, but honestly, in the trade we only use those on chamfer strip.

If you absolutely have to install quarter-round or shoe-mold, then these are some great tips. Me... I hate the look of quarter-round myself and rather live with minor gap between the base and floor, as long as its not more than 1/16-1/8" max. If it is, I then scribe and sand the bottom edge of the base to fit or use some caulk to fill the gap (assuming you have painted base). A no-quarter-round look just looks more modern, if that is the style you are after.

In all honesty them shears are just not the right tool for the job. They work better for cutting rubber gaskets or PVC but they make choppy cuts on wood. When I started learning woodworking I would make cuts that weren't perfect and then cover them up with filler but within a year the expansion and contraction had caused most of the filled in mistakes to reveal themselves and the finish would look awful. My best advice to any beginner is to buy a tenon saw and a cheap plastic mitre box and practice on scrap first until you can do the cuts perfectly. Take your time, work in a well lit area, measure carefully and do the job right first time. You will need these very basic tools in your DIY adventures anyway so buy them and learn to use them first, avoid the urge to improvise.

DUDE......OMG.... it's called a return and those plier type cutters are best used on plastic trailer moulding or for weighing down the bottom of your trash can. In 46yrs as a carpenter, I can say I have seen worse but not sure when, and it is quarter round a moulding with a whole different application, shoe moulding goes at the base of the base, it comes in several profiles, rounded and colonial are the two most common. quarter round is generally used to line "panels" to return the thicker outer frame to the thinner inner panel. People are already buying tools for diy, dont add to the mayhem. bet you would'nt remove your own gallbladder.

Poor quality installation or not installing what the customer asked for is unprofessional. Insulting other peoples work for no reason is unprofessional. NO ,,,its all personal preference ,,I think it looks worse in almost every application, IMO,,especially if the casing is thicker than the base ,which you didn't show for obvious reasons ,,also just back cut back 30% not 45%,,nothing more irritating then someone pushing their preference as if its the only way over another ,,

Quarter round sticks out too far. Base shoe is made for that. The rest is good knowledge. Quarter round covers more, but looks like crap.

better idea: scribe your baseboard properly and skip the ugly quarter round.

Not going to work when you have your wood stained and varnished. Never liked white baseboards.

waste of time cut it flush or at a angle. that doesn't look much better and no way cutting small pieces on a mitre saw. you would have to have that tool which isn't to neat.

Why do inexperienced persons who apparently never spent a day in the trades make these videos? Shoe goes on the bottom of baseboard, not quarter round. If you didn’t know that, maybe you shouldn’t be teaching. And for goodness sake, it’s called a mitered return.

Oh, that’s right…you’re part of the “everybody gets a trophy” generation who apparently seek praise even when spreading bad information to people who don’t know any better. If you go to the store and ask for quarter-round, you get quarter-round. Quarter-round isn’t for baseboards: shoe is for baseboards. And the thin side sits on the floor. You’re welcome.
