Some window manufacturers (Vinylguard in Canada) have a extended brick mould that allows for up to 2" insulation. This sets the actual thermal glass into the wall and not on the exterior of the wall. They also have optional jamb extensions for the inside allowing it to be flush with drywall.

I took off this guys siding and installed thorax and foam then replaced the siding ..so I was watching this utube video , not this one but another , and this guy says you don’t need to install tyvek or thorax lol , homeowners beware of contractors who claim you don’t need house wrap . I dont know much about wrapping. But do people put this stuff over top the older built homes ie bungalows that have those stucco? how would you layer it for old houses with stucco on the exterior? in example do people put paper down--> wooden frame---> styrfoam insulation---> plastic siding? I'm a total noob any ALL OF THIS STUFF. Looking to learn more before getting a friend to do this in the near future on my dads house. maybe in 2-3 years from now. I also live in Alberta Canada so it can go down to Negative -40 degree C which is -104 F

@@jeffd3147 if your going to go over stucco you need to put wooden cleats on the building kinda like studs on the side of the house that you can then mail the siding to , obviously there is a lot of other things you need to do in preparation . Really good and professional work . Around our area in W PA we have enough rain and moisture to contend with that we suggest to the architect/homeowners the have us cover the house sill. You are one of my favorite channels to follow for home improvement projects. I'm actually running into the similar situation, i have 1" rigid foam and building up 1" buck around the opening where we can install window (nailing fin) on the top it looks like perfect solution, this way the foam will be flush with the fin. The only question is when reviewing the code and installation instructions it says: "Embedment must be a minimum of 1 1/4" into the structural framing" So is the 1" buck counts as the "framing" since technically it is 'outside' of the wall framing? My window depth is 3.25" that leaves 2.25 before the fin minus the sheeting 0.75" which leaves 1.5" embedded into the frame (2x4) If we build the buck 1" out, that will technically leave the window only 0.5" inside the frame (2x4)

@burningdust 3 жыл бұрын
That’s a really good question. Often I see this type of exterior foam insulation project come together nicely but when it’s time to install stucco or vinyl siding over it, seems to become a “ok now what?” Type of scenario. Also there’s usually other fixtures such as mailboxes and lighting etc that need to be adjusted to accommodate the foam. I’ve heard it recommended in another video to install the foam over the studs then osb / plywood on top of that so you have a substrate to fasten siding to. Just doesn’t seem to be a good way to do this overall. Wish there was a system out there that made sense.

Taping the house wrap to the bottom window trim is probably a bad idea. If there is a leak around the trim, it will funnel water right to the sheathing. But then that's probably the best you can do without taking the windows and redoing the sill pan.

It's my understanding that the house wrap goes at the same depth of your windows. His windows are installed on the ply wood, so wrap gets installed on ply wood. If the windows were built out to match the insulation, the wrap should be installed on the installation.

So, if you're going to cut out for the window extension, why not do that when you're putting up the foam insulation? Why cut twice? Doesn't that also risk cutting your air seal? Thanks.

can i use cedar singles on top of that insulation? would i have to use straping on top of the insulation or would i be able to shingle right on top ??? starting my cedar shingles next week. im in mass and this its a great idea for a little extra insulation.

If your rigid is 1" or less thick I would say you could go right over it but if its thicker I would be inclined to either sheeting over the wall first and then installing house wrap and shingles or strapping the wall with 1x4s. We could discuss this more on the forum if you need more info.www.house-improvements.com/forums/

great video, good explanations, what is on the inside of these walls, and are you insulating for heat? or cold? or both? I am in Central Ontario Canada, winter runs about 4- 6 months some years.

Hi Shannon, I have a question, Im putting up LP osb panel siding and removing old masonite. The walls have foil covered 5/8" insulation board nailed to the studs that are insulated with fiberglass batts. Of course the interior walls have a plastic barrier finished with sheetrock. Does the plastic barrier on the interior serve as an adequate vapor barrier with the foil covered insulation board? I have already finished one wall on the house and put house wrap over the insulation board. was that wrong or even okay but unnecessary ? Im getting ready to start on another wall and considering replacing the 5/8" insulation board with the 2" that you used in this video. Thanks

Yes , the interior poly is the vapour barrier, it is always placed on what would be the the warm side of the wall during winter months.

About the house wrap and insulation - what about the moisture that comes out of house with the air, doesn't it get stuck between the wrap and the insulation?

There is very little here because we have a vapour barrier on the interior.

I've seen furring strips used on top of the foam. Would you expect that much moisture to creep in and need to dry out?

In some regions that is required.

Thank you for this video. My heating bill is going up, so I want to install a similar insulation styrofoam on the top of my brick wall. Question - do you allow the gaps in between the foam sheets to allow the thermal expansion? Why don't use the pressure-treated wood for the outside styrofoam support? Also, if I use the blue tapcon screws to attach the styrofoam to the wall - they may rust, but will they rust under the siding? Again, if I will use a siding above the styrofoam then how can I nail/screw it to the brick wall behind it? Again the tapcon screws will rust.

Is any chance mold can appear between foam board and home wrap? As I see there is no gap for venting. What do you think?
@bcoldwell1
@bcoldwell1 3 жыл бұрын
I had the same question. You now have a vapor barrier inside behind you gyp, on the warm side, and with the xps, you have added another vapor barrier. Kind of possible to "trap" any vapor moving from warm to cold. There is - I have heard - a rule of thumb about what % of you R value can be outside the housewrap, vs on the warm side. I'm doing the same as done here, so need to figure it out. Roxul is vapor permeable, so isn't an issue I don't think.
@Faruk651
@Faruk651 3 жыл бұрын
This is why it is not a good idea to use XPS foam (like the one used in this video) on the exterior side of the house. Instead you should be using EPS styrofoam. Because eps foam will not trap vapor.
@Faruk651
@Faruk651 3 жыл бұрын
There are EPS styrofoam sheets that has channels on the back side which helps air movement and ventilation. Durock has Puccs Styroams as an example.

how do you install the siding then? Use 3 inch nails then? Does it not defeat the purpose of thermal bridging then to put a million nails in through the foam? No rain screen or furring strips?
@ducebigalow8834
@ducebigalow8834 5 жыл бұрын
Typically yes, longer nails or I would use screws for vinyl siding. I would not strap the rigid prior to vinyl siding, as you could get air behind it thus rattling the siding.
@vap0rtranz
@vap0rtranz 5 жыл бұрын
@@ducebigalow8834 odd. Never heard of rattling siding. Where has this happened? Several builders do recommend @NateM's idea of furring strips. The air gap also acts as a water runoff if there's a water barrier there for anything the siding doesn't stop (like backed up gutters, melting ice dams, etc.)
