Thanks for taking the time to post this. I actually have a garmin striker plus 4cv and it has a completely different transducer which is much longer and actually is impossible to fit inside the lowrance ready plate without cutting off a lot of plastic. It would stick out of the front of the plate and prevent me from screwing in the plate. The clamps did not work for the 4cv plus transducer, and it was a painstaking effort but I have finally Finished. But I have to say that your video was helpful to piece together the basic elements of what needed to be done to make it work. I applaud you for putting in the effort to help others on KZfaq. Thank you!

Your explanation is so clear and precise. Thanks. But why compass and not the outback or pro angler?
@KayakFishingAddict4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your question....and for watching and subscribing! I chose the Compass for two main reasons. 1. Weight and 2. Cost/Value. At the time I purchased my Compass I didn't have a truck, so I car topped it. That entails lifting the kayak over the top of the car and placing it on the roof racks upside down. There's no way I wanted to do that with the Pro Angler....I'd need a fork lift. The same is also true now that I have a truck. I still wouldn't want to lift the PA. So why not the Outback? I think the Outback is a great yak! For me, it still was heavy but when I looked at the price of the Outback versus the Compass + the simple Mods I wanted ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aphxa5CSqrC9Z6s.html ) I figured the Compass would serve me better and save some money. Today, now that I've had it, I'm 100% positive that I made the right choice. The only thing I wish I had were the kick up fins! See my video on how I rigged the Compass for efficient fishing ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aphxa5CSqrC9Z6s.html ). If I rigged an Outback the same way I would have a lot of wasted space and wasted weight!

Nice video! Any reason why the transducer needs to be 1/8” from the mounting plate? What happens if you sit it directly on the plate?
@rpk4btw Жыл бұрын
Actually I found out why. According to the Hobie owner manual, you need at least an 1/8” of space between the transducer and protective plate to allow water flow. I guess this will give you a more accurate reading.

@KayakFishingAddict4 жыл бұрын
Hmmm, you're teaching me something here....I didn't know that the Garmin even showed the speed :). I'll have to check that next time out....but my guess is that it determines speed via GPS which will work regardless of the location of the transducer.

Water is supposed to surround the transducer. If you press it against the plastic shield and it is tight and never moves you’ll likely be ok. If it moves or vibrates on the plastic shield it will likely mess up the readings.

Any concern over corrosion of the non stainless clamps? I guess you can always replace since it’s so cheap
@KayakFishingAddict5 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly! The clamp is the only non-stainless steel item. The EMT version of the components should take longer to corrode if they do at all. Since it's all connected with stainless steel parts and plastic the only danger I thought about is that it would rust through and the transducer would drop and rest on the bottom of the Lowrance plate. The nuts and bolts should stay since they're sandwiched in the Lowrance mounting plastic slots and the other is in the plastic transducer that's connected via the transducer cable. A quick annual check on it with a backup set of clamps from the same package should be all that's needed.

Question: do those EMT straps rust at all? If so, do you see those nasty rust marks on the bottom of your kayak? I know they make plastic ones as well and I'm just wondering if you picked the metal version because that's what was available or because of the structural aspect as opposed to plastic.
@KayakFishingAddict4 жыл бұрын
Do they rust? I took the plastic plate off quite a few months ago and there was some but not enough to worry about. I haven't replaced them yet. I was searching for a solution for days and made several trips to Lowe's ....I never found any plastic ones...so to answer your question, I picked up the metal version because that's what I found that worked.

Why 1/8 off the plate?
@KayakFishingAddict3 жыл бұрын
Hi Emanuel, great question. The instructions for mounting from Hobie/Lowrance said there should be a gap between the transducer and the plastic guard plate. However, some people mount transducers on the inside of a hull, so perhaps it's unnecessary. But then again, the plate is not as thick as the hull of a kayak, so the gap would provide a little more protection if the plate was hit hard by the top of an oyster bed.
