This is a video showing how to install HID's on a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. This will also work on a 2015 GMC sierra 1500 and 2015 2500/3500. Verify with TRS on your specific model before you buy anything.
2016 trucks use a new style headlight and this will not work.
This kit is sold by The Retrofit Source. It is specifically made for GMC Sierra's. It sells for $170 on their website and includes everything you need to install them on your truck.

Great video! Have you been happy with the light output vs the stock halogens? Is the 35W 4500K a close color match to the DRL LEDs? I'm thinking about ordering these for my '15 soon.
@fondupot
@fondupot 8 жыл бұрын
+beardt1 I am very happy with the output vs the stock halogens. The color matches pretty close tot he DRL's. When the HID's first kick on they are a little bit on the blue side, but after about 15-20 seconds the ballasts warm up and the color evens out to a nice white.

Huge thanks for this video. Has the 35w been plenty bright for you? Do you have to drive on snowy roads or wet roads? Have you ever wished you would have went with 50w instead? I'm set on the 4500k, I just can't make up my mind on 35w vs 50w.

4500K will be what you want then. I went with 35 watt ballasts, but I have run 55W ballasts in the past. higher wattage ballasts will just increase the lumens, but at the cost of burning bulbs our faster.

I purchased this same set up from TRS after watching your video. I have a 2015 Sierra and had an issue which was fixed by TRS customer service having me flip the connector going into the capacitor link because sometimes the polarity is reversed on the trucks, apparently. That worked great. Do you like this upgrade enough to do it to your new Colorado as well?
@fondupot
@fondupot 7 жыл бұрын
Nick Hanish glad you got it worked out. Yea I heard about the polarity issue. I will likely go with an LED setup on my Colorado. A few other owners have done a similar upgrade and LEDs seem to work well in the Colorado project. Without the need of the relay harness.

Just finished installing the same kit with 55W ballast/5500K bulb. No issues at all with excessive heating from the 55W kit. The only bad thing I experienced with the kit was the wires were not seated fully inside the connectors, wires fell right off.

why did you go with the 35W kit over the 50W kit? Will the 50W kit melt my headlights?
@fondupot
@fondupot 8 жыл бұрын
+kschab more for longevity of the bulbs. Bulbs used with a 35w ballast will last longer compared to a bulb used with 55w ballast. Also, I wanted a very specific color from my headlights, and the 35w ballasts offer that. When you use 55w ballasts the color of the bulbs shifts a bit. And I didn't want that. I am not sure if the 55w ballasts will generate enough heat to melt your headlights, maybe. Idk

It was an easy install. I pulled my truck into the shop here at work. Set it the right distance from the door and measured the lights on the door. laid everything out on a folding table and then figured out the routing. That seems to be the most difficult part. I went with the 55w and 5500 color temp lights. I really like the whiter light. (I need to get the fog lights some 5500 bulbs now. but they really don't seem to do much anyway). Much improved over the stock lights. well worth the money to upgrade. I caught a sale and got the kit for maybe 150 shipped. So even better of a deal. Your video helped steer me in the right direction. I live in a pretty rural area so seeing deer before they become a hood ornament is a big plus. LOL

Just seeing video an someone may have asked this already but do you have the canbus system an is it necessary for this type of setup. An if not does it throw any codes off. @fondupot
@fondupot 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have the canbus harness. It is necessary, otherwise you will get codes. My truck has LED accent DRL's It will be different for a 2011, so I am not sure exactly what you'd need.

Why did you cut the driver connection side that hooks up to the factory light wire? I don't get that
@fondupot
@fondupot 8 жыл бұрын
+Justin H With the relay harness, you only need one side to get an OEM signal. So in this case the passenger side is where I pulled the signal from. The driver side OEM connector is just unplugged inside the headlight. So there was no need for the extra wire to still be attached to the rubber grommet. It would have been unused and just hanging there too. So I cut it off.
@justinh1258
@justinh1258 8 жыл бұрын
+fondupot thanks for the reply. What would happen if you also connected that driver side? Also I wanted to get your opinion on one more thing. You know how when the truck is unlocked with the key fob at night or when you exit it at night it shines the low beams? With HIDs is that going to drain the battery or be a non issue?
@fondupot
@fondupot 8 жыл бұрын
+Justin H Like I said, with the relay harness, there is only one connection to get OEM signal from. And that's all you need. If you watch my review video, I show a the harness up close a little more. There is nothing to plug the driver side into. You could run the harness the other way and get your signal from the driver side and leave the passenger side OEM plug alone. Either way you do it. The harness ONLY needs one connection. But the way the harness is made, it is meant to be run the way I did in the video. Otherwise you would need to extend wires to make it reach to your battery and what not. I've had the HID's for a few months now. No issues with battery drain. Non issue.

@fondupot
@fondupot 7 жыл бұрын
2014 and 2015 models came with an HIR bulb. Which in the right application, is plenty of light. The problem with these trucks is the projector they used was garbage, and would not give ample projection to the HIR bulb. Adding the HID kit helped, but still was sub par compared to other vehicles I have had with OEM HID's.

I custom built my Silverado and I’ve read where GM in general cheaps out on simple bulbs. Who would have thought. The only way to get the HIDs automatically is with a GMC Denali, and a Chevy Silverado High Country which is Chevy’s Denali version.
