Wow what a stand up guy. I have watched countless tutorials on how to install tile on cement and I must say this one was the best in every sense. He even touched upon the transition strip. Very detailed. Also I enjoyed that you spoke about your background and how you got started in the business. There need to be more business owners like you. Thank you for your time and expertise.

Hi, thank you so much for your video, it was really informational and I appreciated the length that you explained each step. I was wondering why you did not use an uncoupling membrane? When should we use uncoupling membranes? I am trying to tile a 1/2 bathroom downstairs, and am very nervous. Thank you.
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Great question, this was actually a commercial unit bathroom, and I advised the Cust about an in coupling membrane. They opted out. I would recommend that you use one. It’s always up to the customer. We use it 65% of the time when it’s in the budget. The other 35% that we haven’t used the membrane directly on concrete has never ever had problems or call backs. I wouldn’t be nervous, take your time, everything will work out fine. Stay safe and healthy! Happy remodelling!

@@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 wow, thank you so much for the quick reply! that was really helpful, thank you. If I may ask another question: when is it appropriate to use a primer? Is it only used for levelling agent? Also, is it worth using primer and levelling for a tiny 1/2 bathroom? Thank you so much.
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 4 жыл бұрын
The primer can also help if you wanna lay right on the concrete directly, it surely doesn’t hurt. Using the self levelling concrete will always help no matter the size. The major benefit would be a straighter floor for easier tile install. Check the floor, see if the floor is not straight, check out the video I have on floor levelling. Every job or situation is always unique. Always a pleasure and here to help!

In that job we were told to keep the height of the tile as low as possible. I still used 1/4” x 3/8” . 1/2” trowel is best. I usually use 1/2” on that size tile. Thanks for watching. Stay safe and healthy!

Who’s behind me?😉 thank you for the compliment! Great question BTW! I used the grey LFT by mapei. We use modified on 90% of our jobs. Modified has a few more chemicals in it for bonding and curing. You can definitely use non modified. In regards to the color, the white is more expensive and is used more for natural white stones like marble, and so on so that you won’t see a color difference bleed through by using grey. This is especially the case when do glass tile also, I would use the white then. It’s ok to use the white, just the cost is higher. I used grey because the tile was just a porcelain grey tile. Check out my other videos on tile in the tile playlists, and enjoy. I hope this helps and thank you again! Please share the videos with your friends, have fun!

Thank you for this amazing video. I’m taking on my sister’s 8x5 basement bathroom and it feels doable after watching this. Quest for you. She has stained concrete throughout the entire basement. How would you prep that for tile? I’m thinking a disc grinder but I was also wondering if there is an acid product that would make it a bit easier

Thank you for the well paced video :) Great job! The camerawoman did a great job too! If you don't mind I've a couple questions: 1 - Shouldn't the tiles be flushed against all the walls? I see some gap in there...there is no chance of the water liking to the concrete and cause problems down the road? 2 - In a remodel situation, how do you make sure that the new tiles will be at the same level of the other rooms flooring? Thank you!
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 3 жыл бұрын
You’re very welcome Nuno! Thank you for watching! Lets see if I could help answer your questions. 1-The tiles don’t need to be flush to the walls, as long as the finished baseboard covers up the gap. That all depends on what finish you’re putting from floor to the wall. Check out our finish carpentry playlists and you will see the finish. How to install baseboard. This video will show why I was concerned about the gap of tile to wall. If you’re installing a tile baseboard, then I would suggest go as close to the wall as possible. PLease remember these videos are of real jobs and not just a Mach up to make a video. 2-Great question, to match up the new to be tile floor to another level of floor, there are a ton of different methods, again this job was installed to stay low as per customers request. If you have to raise the floor you can by using an uncoupling membrane that can raise by different heights, You can use a 1/2” X 1/2” trowel, you can use self levelling cement also to raise up and or even a dry pack base. We have a few videos on these subjects all except for using a dry pack base. So check out our other videos on tile installation in our library. I hope this helps, Stay tuned for more videos coming soon! Don’t forget to subscribe! Stay safe and healthy and thanks for watching!

Thank you for such an informative video. I search through internet for "how to install tiles on a concrete floor", so that I can understand why some of the tiles in my house cracked. My whole house is tiled when we moved in 20 years ago. While the painter was painting our living room and kitchen (several years ago) and told me "several tiles in the living room and kitchen are hollow underneath - - -". He knocked on those tiles with the wooden end of the paint brush and those tiles made sounds different to that of the tiles nearby. Several of those tiles cracked now after we moved a lots of stuff to that area for a few years. It appears the areas under those tiles might not have enough "mixing stuff" underneath them, am I right?

Great video and am about to tackle my 2nd bathroom floor. However, unlike the last one, this one is on a slab foundation. The floor looks fine (level, free of any glue or debris as they used a floating floor. Question, with this clean concrete floor, should I forgo the Schluter Ditra uncoupling membrane like i used on my first job (plywood). It worked great on that job, but is it going to be overkill on the concrete floor? Thx!!

Thanks Dave Luke! To be honest I would still use an uncoupling membrane to avoid cracks in the finish tile. Dave you don’t have to use a name brand like schluter, there are a ton of different manufacturers that make the same without paying for the name

Hi there sir and 1st of all thank you for sharing your knowledge. I’m about to start cutting my 32x32 porcelain tiles for installation on my bathroom’s concrete floor. (Using the Dewalt 10”) Question 1: Which is the best option, a square 1/2x1/2x1/2 vs U-notch 9/16x3/4x3/8 trowel? Question 2: is using a U-Notch give me a shorter height when tile is finally set, I’ve heard it would give me a Third of the original 9/16 height which in theory should be lower than using the 1/2 square trowel. And lastly, Question 3, if height is my concern would you recommend I used the 1/4 trowel you used on this video for my 32x32 size tile and if so do you see any issues given ones I back butter it will still only give me half the height of the original 1/4th, making its final height be an estimated 1/8 please advice. Lastly my bathroom is only 25 Sqf and I’ll be only using 4 of the 32x32 porcelain tiles. If there is another trowel you would recommend I would be much appreciated. Thank you again for all your help.

Home Today thanks for watching. I would use 1/2 trowel. We used the 1/4 x 3/8 in this video. I don’t see why the u notch trowel is necessary. The bigger the trowel the more cement. Without back butter the tile with the notch you will get approx. 60% of the height. If you back butter the tile with the notch side you will get about 85% of the height. No matter what backbutter the tile with the flat side of the trowel. That’s a big tile, is this your first tile job? Make sure the floor is completely level before you start! Hope this helps.

Excellent job and very nice step by step explanations. I doing my condo bathroom whish is 5'x5'. It is on the 4th floor and had tiny tile which were very difficult remove and even more difficult when removing the old cement underneath the tiles. Now, I am left with an uneven surface and would like to tile it the way you did yours and I am a bit concerned in not exceeding the original Hight. I am in the US and wondering what suggestion you might have in order not to have an elevated flooring compared to the original condition. Tanks again for the beautifully done video and the very professional job that you did on this video.

Hello Edward, on the grout is it sanded grout? Also, when does one use 1/4 gaps? Do you have a video on cutting tile. How do prevent chips when cutting towards the end of the tile? Thanks
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639

Jim Castillo the grout for the floor is sanded. 1/4 gaps only depends on the tile and the look you want. The best way to prevents chips is to buy a really good blade.this is the one I use is the p4 amzn.to/3lK471r or the upgraded version is the P5 amzn.to/3iWw1We, these blades are amazing and help from chipping.

Thanks, appreciate your care! Question: You use 1/4 inch trowel and apply 1/4 inch to both floor and back of tile. This as opposed to using 1/2 inch on the floor (for these large format tiles) and then just back buttering the tile. I like this method but have never seen this demonstrated before. It seems that applying 1/4" to both will ensure more uniform coverage of thinset? Can you comment on your method-While it does not appear to be "standard practice", I am thinking of doing it this way on my upcoming 12x24 tile job.? Thank you!
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 3 жыл бұрын
Hey David, I apologize for not responding sooner. I only saw this today. I used the 1/4" trowel because the customer didn't want the floor to high because he wasn't sure what floor he was going to put everywhere else. You should be using a 1/2" trowel for the large tile. Regardless of any size trowel I install it exactly the same way that I demonstrated in this video. Applying the mortar the way I did we ensure the best contact possible. Please note our viewers discretion is advised: These videos are not here to dictate on exactly what you should do. You need to take what you think works for you and decide what works best in the situation or job that you are going to take on. Everyone has different methods that work for them. I hope this helps. In Guam, all the homes floors and walls are made of concrete. Greatly appreciate the video. I’m removing a poorly installed bathtub right now. Had to cut it in half to remove it due to the way my house layout is. I can’t put a new tub in so I got the idea to tile in the existing concrete frame that a tub would sit in. I’m thinking I could follow your steps, but what would you do differently if this was a shower/Roman tub? Specifically for creating a slope and the joints where the floor and wall meet?
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639
@idealdirecthomeimprovement1639 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Daniel from Guam! That’s a really good question. You can definitely use the same method of installation for the walls on concrete. The steps are all here in the video. From what I’m understanding, is that you are going to a sloped floor to slope to the drain. The only thing different to that would be to use smaller tiles for the shower floor. Here in Canada we use a sand mix concrete and we call it dry pack. I don’t have a video on that yet. We usually use a premium fibre glass base and if we have to go smaller we fill in the rest with a bench. Look up Tile Coach’s channel here on KZfaq, he looks like a stand up guy and knows his stuff. I’m sure he had videos to help make the shower base. I hope this helps. Stay safe and healthy and happy holidays! Thanks for watching.

Homeowner dyser here. Question: you use 1/8" grout line in this job. I am torn between 1/8th and 3/16th. Besides personal preference and current trends (smaller grout widths), is there a reason you would use one width vs the other? Thank you again.

Great question, it’s all about aesthetics, no more no less. What ever will look better with the tile you’re installing. In my opinion 1/8” looks great with a tile that has a rectified edge. Keep in mind 1/8” gap has very little room for error. If you take your time and can use a straight edge as a guide and good clean spacers, you will be fine. Check out the links in the description for most of the things I use and find help me. Thank you for watching, stay tuned for more videos to come, stay safe and healthy and Happy Holidays!
