You are relieving any stress on the scope that could be introduced by doing it this way. You have added to my OCD.

When you're torquing down a rail that grabs on angles, dry-on-dry can absorb a large percentage of the torque that is supposed to be working into the threads of the fastner. A little lube on the rail allows that contact surface to have less friction, and the torque gets into the fastner, and you get a better grab.

What about the gaps between the scope base and top ring being equal on either side? Do the alignment pins negate the top cap from shifting? You mentioned tightening the caps down in an “x” pattern but didn’t mention the gap. Is this something to pay attention to during the leveling and final torquing step?
@area419
@area419 3 ай бұрын
Getting an even gap is relevant, though if you walk the screws down in an X slowly, your gap will be quite even.

It seems you didn't really touch on pushing the rings forward before tightening them to the rail to make sure the recoil lugs are seated firmly against the direction of recoil, any particular reason why?

I hit this specifically at 5:30 - though could have probably talked about it more heavily. It's an important step.

Great info, what brand torque wrench are you using?
@area419
@area419 Жыл бұрын
That one specifically is CDI brand, can me had on MSC for about $70 (or a little less if you have an industrial account). We have a few adjustable units around, including Wera. Fix-It-Sticks are also a nice option.

How is this mounting procedure affected by repeated installation and removal of the scope from the rifle, such as a prone match rifle?
@area419
@area419 Жыл бұрын
I don't think that would matter. Just suggest you remember to wet-mount when you can, and make sure the rings are pushed forward in the pic lugs.

Will you be releasing top caps or matched rings with mounting options for top mounted accesories? Such as nvg/diveboard pic rails. Or will that be onlt for the 1 piece mount.

That is likely to be only a Tac mount thing

Are these medium or low rings?? I’m putting a ATACR on a Remington 700 LA with your base, need to know which ring height to go with. Thanks.

Question... Why so light of torque on rings ?
@area419
@area419 Жыл бұрын
Torque values are dependent on how much force you want to create, and the pitch/diameter of your fastener threads.

Sorry, but this is not how it's done. Two-piece rings have the inherent issue of potential for misalignment. No matter how well they are made. Mount your rings, torque the bases and then lap them in. it's the only way to ensure no stress on the scope. And then never remove the bases of those rings, just the top caps. Otherwise, you'll need to lap them in again. If you need to be able to remove your scope and rings, use a 1-piece mount. That's what they are designed for. 2-piece rings are designed to stay mounted to the rifle. Ask a match winning benchrest shooter or read a book on it. Do people ignore this advice and still win ? Sure. But that has more to do with the shooter and less to do with the rifle. Want to do it right, follow the lapping procedure.

This approach makes zero sense to me, and perhaps everyone else that is watching. Here's why...With your three step procedure (tighten tops to scope, tighten bottom to rail, loosen top and level), you're going to loosen the top rings to level the scope, thereby negating some perceived need to have tightened them before tightening the bottom ring to the rail fixture. Why not simply wet torque the bottom (Step 1), and then install the top rings such that the scope's reticle is perfectly level (Step 2). Simple, straightforward, makes sense, and should work if your new match rings are all they're supposed to be....
@area419

If your pic rail is perfectly true, as many integral-rail actions will be, then there is no difference at all. This is to account for the idea that pic rails can have variance, and that pic rails, in general, are imperfect mounting surfaces. The odds of your scope body being round and straight, as they are virtually all lathe turned, is higher than the pic rail, which can be made a variety of ways, including as a separate part. Doing it this way makes sure the mating between the ring and optic is perfect, and the mating between the ring and the rail is as good as it can be. Your suggestion, with a lock into the base first, means the scope will be forced into any imperfections presented by the rail or the rail interface. If your pic rail is perfect, there is no problem here, but if it isn't, well that presents issue.
