Thanks for the guide man! I was on the verge of tearing my hair off coz idk how to set up my home WiFi, now I have a slight idea... Looking to get the 2.5gbps connection from whizzcomms, gonna buy a wireless router which supports 2.5gbps, put in my db box, connect it to the ethernet port(D1 to D5) thingy to my main bed room and put a deco wireless mesh in my main room, so my main room has WiFi and my one PC can use ethernet lan connection from my deco wireless mesh in my main room... Thank you for the clarifications and guide bro!

Hi there, it's a 2 year old video but still very relevant for new homeowners like myself! I am getting a old 4 room resale house (~early 2000s flat) and the DB Box is in the bomb shelter which is situated in the kitchen, what would be the best mesh network configuration for someone who is planning to have a home office in bedroom 2 (just beside the master br), but also want consistent and strong wifi signal across all bedrooms + living room?
@SherBooga
@SherBooga 10 күн бұрын
It's very hard to gauge without the actual home plans. But I'd guess to install the modem in the db box but try to connect it to a master router in bedroom 2. And then connect another mesh node in the living room. As for specific cabling connections, there are multiple ways to go about doing it but it depends on the house layout.

@SherBooga

Yes the signal will not be able to reach as far as it could have. Supposedly you have 2 mesh nodes, the main one will have to take in the WAN, and then 1 more for Ethernet backhaul, the other node will need to have 1 to accept the Ethernet.

Thinking of placing an asus router like an AX6000 or AX11000 in the db box. However, do have a concern that when closed, the wifi signal will be affected. Have you experienced any issues similar to this with the router placement? So far, have placed the ISP provided router in the middle of the living room which gives me full bar or just one bar drop even in the master (furthest room) with doors closed. Planning to have ethernet backhaul when I move in fully though as I plan to connect my PC via ethernet so definitely need to have router in the DB box eventually.
@SherBooga
@SherBooga Жыл бұрын
Yes it will definitely be affected and not ideal for routers to be in db boxes in general. However in the case of AX6000 or AX11000, I don't think it will matter too much in terms of signal strength for a 4-5 room flat as they are extremely powerful routers. Even if it really is an issue, you can easily add the isp provided router as an access point. The more interesting thing to consider is if the router can fit into the db box properly if you are planning to do carpentry over or change the db box doors.

Hi, great video! liked and subscribed. may i know if it's absolutely necessary to place a router in the db box (like yours) if i wish to avoid doing cabling trunking. meaning, can i just place the ONT in the DB BOX and just put the router at the study room. or, in order to do that i need to trunk my ont cable all the way to the router in study room?

If you have a patch panel (D1-D6 thing), then i think it should be possible to leave your ONT in the db box, connect to the patch panel and to your router in the study. However, you should also be aware that it will be slightly more of a hassle to upgrade or use more ports in the future.

@SherBooga
@SherBooga 2 жыл бұрын
Because the AX88U will be servicing more devices and traffic so it needs more resources. It would be an overkill for 2x AX88U and too costly. Even my setup is an overkill. So I would recommend cheaper alternatives.

Thanks for the great info! I'm thinking to have RT-AX58U for my living room (RT-AX88U a little pricey..), do you have any router recommendations to be placed for my study? Going to have it wired. It is a 5 room resale so not sure if what kind of set up is good enough. Hopefully you can share some thoughts!
@SherBooga
@SherBooga 2 жыл бұрын
Are you planning to use the AiMesh setup? If you are, another RT-AX58U would do pretty well. If you are not and you just want wifi for the rest of the house, maybe just a wireless access point like Unifi's UniFI6 Lite would help. If you require both wired and wifi, then I'll suggest just getting the AX58U and use AiMesh. It should adequately cover the house and more hassle free than getting a network switch and wireless access point for the study. Feel free to let us know what other requirements you're looking at like budget, devices, etc. if you need more suggestions.

@mrbamba 2 жыл бұрын
@@SherBooga yes I’m gonna use AiMesh. Also highly recommended by my friend who is also using the same setup/routers as you. Since I’m redoing all cables for my new house, I am going to go wired. Similar to you, it will be wired from the main router in the living to my study room’s router which will be connected via LAN to 2 PCs (gaming/work). My master and rest of house will be using WiFi since usage might not be as heavy. I guess probably just some light browsing/social media. Just not sure if the AX58U WiFi coverage is decent enough to cover the other parts of the house (flat size abt 1248sqft). I did consider AX88U too (like your setup) but you mentioned “overkill” in your case, so I thought it might be the same for me too.. Well, for budget wise, I’m willing to pay abit more if it is what I need. Just don’t need to overspend on stuff we don’t need. Cos you know, reno already very expensive hahahaha 😄
@SherBooga
@SherBooga 2 жыл бұрын
I think 2x AX58U would work for your case. If your layout is similar to mine, then the problem areas are going to probably be the service yard and the master toilet. In my case, both areas still have decent speed for light browsing and social media so it should be fine for yours. Worst case scenario, use the isp router as a wireless access point but doubt you'll need it.

Thank you so much for this video, it was super informative! Most of the set-ups that you recommend start with a modem/ONT in the D/B box. Is there a reason why this set up is recommended? E.g. why not have the modem in the living room/TV consol instead? Is it because the modem should always be next to the box "thingy" that connects to all the different ports in the house? Apologies and pardon my ignorance.
@SherBooga
@SherBooga Жыл бұрын
Nope. Because the router will be routing the network from the modem to the D1-D6 patch panel in the db box. The ideal is of course to put it in the living room in my set up, so modem to D1 and then D1 to router in living room. But then I will need to have a cable back from the living room to the db box patch panel. If not, D2 to D6 will be useless. The router has to be the device to route to all the patch panel ports.

Thanks in advance.
@SherBooga
@SherBooga Жыл бұрын
If you are using velop and giving no real problems, I suggest you can continue to use it, the only downside is that it's WiFi 5 but unless you have a lot of WiFi 6 devices, you won't notice much differences. However, if you are setting up for a new place with new devices, my suggestion is to always try to get someone to do the lan ports for you. Otherwise, I think both x50 or x60 should be fine depending on the size of the house (x60 for bigger house), although the best is still to connect the nodes via ethernet cable.

@DavLim86
@DavLim86 Жыл бұрын
Hey nice video, but I got 1 question. Is there a reason, you choose to output the ONT to your router instead of directly to your D1 - D3 switch, probably you can swap your network switch there to split 1 source into 3. Then put your router on the TV console pushing the WiFi range into your living room and maybe further into your guest room, while most router comes with at least 4 ports, you can plug 1 into your TV and the other into your console.
@SherBooga
@SherBooga Жыл бұрын
Yup, main reason is that by doing that, say ont to my living room port to my router, for me to have LAN access to my study as shown in the video, I would have to find a way to run the ethernet cable either from my living room to my study, or run another ethernet cable back to the db box to access the d1-d3 switch and then to my study. As I didnt want to do anything extra, this was the solution I went ahead with. If I only require one router with WiFi to the rest of the house, I will opt for the solution you've written. Correct me if I miss out something here.
@DavLim86
@DavLim86 Жыл бұрын
@@SherBooga yeap! I will run the same solution as u. Haha just asking for the context, generally, will benefit more if the router wasn't put in the cupboard, 5Ghz signal will be weaker under comparison and the range for it to go further into the house.

@@SherBooga i do have a suggestion which is to switch ur more powerful router (AX-88U) with the one in your study or even put it at the living room, then shift ur switch to the study room instead. (depends on network coverage). This way i felt would better optimise the network coverage... or rather make full use of the more powerful router.... So in essence its: ONT to AX58U to D1-D3. Then AX88U can choose to relocate to either D1-3 location. HDB really nid to relook into their networking or go for networking courses!! who designs a router to be at one end of a house and worse, in a box!
@SherBooga
@SherBooga Жыл бұрын
I was toying with the idea before moving in as well, but in our use case, the router in the db box would ultimately service more devices. The stronger cpu and more ram would then be more useful here. However, I've tried both routers in both locations and they don't have much differences in terms of noticeable speed so I guess it boils down to what's the use case for your house.

@SherBooga
@SherBooga 8 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, packet loss can be due to a lot of things. One way in which I think you can start troubleshooting is to start eliminating possible issues. I would suggest connecting via ethernet cable to the router directly and see if you have those issues. After that, connect via ethernet to the range extender to make sure that the range extender is the issue. You can also try if connecting via WiFi to the range extender has lesser/more packet loss and find the cause of the issue from there. Unfortunately, you're right. Range extenders from how you described it should be running on power lines which is known to cause intermittent connection issues, it's still best to connect to ethernet ports. Hope it'll not be too costly when you eventually make the upgrade!

Try plugging a pc or laptop directly to the main router via LAN if there is no issue, maybe check the connection or any intermediary hardware between mbr and the router. If it's the same 600-700Mbps then there could be an issue with the settings in the TUF router or if you have another lan cable, try it. Unfortunately there could be a whole bunch of issues and we can only go by process of elimination.

@@SherBooga Can you kindly help me with this question? Is it possible that i connect Ethernet cable direct from ISP modem to d1-d6 and have my router placed in my living room instead of db box? or must it be like From Isp to Asus Router to d1-d6 as shown in your video? Thanks in advance

It is possible. But if you need to connect another device to the router from the bedroom, for example, a pc. it is not possible to do so unless you have a way to get the router in the living room to connect back to the db box and then to the bedroom pc. If you have no such requirement, then putting the router in the living room is no issue.

Stupid question and a bit curious. Can you connect from ONT to DBbox(eg D1 port) then from D1 port directly into a pc? Lol

Yes, it should be possible, but then that will be your only device that has Internet

Hi, what's the difference if I get 1gbps Vs 2gbps? Cox I plan to get 2gbps Singtel mesh. And also WiFi 5 or WiFi 6?
@SherBooga
@SherBooga Жыл бұрын
The 2gbps is usually a 2 x 1gbps, so you can have dedicated bandwidth, please check with the ISP if that's what you really want. If its a new place, I would recommend WiFi 6 as it's the newer one. But because there's not a lot of devices which support WiFi 6 as of now (besides the newer laptops and phones) there's honestly not too much differences. If it saves you quite a bit of money, you can look at WiFi 5.

@@SherBooga so let say I sign for WiFi 6 but maybe some of my device doesn't support WiFi 6, does your device still able to connect to the internet? And I got 1 more questions, can I connect ONT straight to the D1-D7 provided by HDB to my mesh WiFi router in living room?

Yes. WiFi 6 devices should be backward compatible. Also yes it should be able to.

When I put my router in my room. It doesn't have Internet although it has WIFI damn confusing.

If that's the case, it is highly likely the case where the connection between the main router and the room router is not connected or configured properly

Hi, can I know is it a must to use cat6 cable for the connection with db box?

Between which devices? From ont modem to router, yes. From router to the D1-D6 patch panel, yes. At least for default setup as shown in the video.

@@SherBooga So I am trying to connect my router to my TV in living room through D1 port. I connect the router to D1 of patch panel and use a cat5e cable to connect my TV with the D1 port in living room but it does not work. I am not entirely sure if the cable used for router and patch panel is cat6 but guess I will try to use a cat6 cable for my TV and see if it works. Thanks!
@SherBooga

Cat 6 cable should be backward compatible. I have a feeling it might be something else. Instead of the patch panel, can you connect to a device from your router just to check that the patch panel or the cables are not faulty

@SherBooga ya I actually tried connecting the router directly to my laptop and it works fine

Personally, I prefer the Asus because of additional better processing power, lan ports and tri band but I don't remember their specs off the top of my head so I might be wrong.

hey i recently faced an odd issue where my router RT-AX56U LED lights all are not turning on but according to the APP, the device is connected. I tried using the APP to force turn on the LED, turning on/off the router and even pressed the reset button, but the LED lights are still off. Anyone encounters this before? :/ have been using only for 7 months..

Does it work but the LED is off? There's a setting in the router config that turns off the LED I believe and I'm wondering if you switched it off

Could be a firmware issue, could be a hardware issue. If it's just 7 months I'll contact their support tbh and see if they have a way to troubleshoot or maybe it's just a faulty model
