Thank you for the informative video! Simplified for noobs. Question tho, when setting up wired mesh , you mentioned need to connect the mesh to db box then to modem. However in my modem, only one port is enabled. The other LAN ports are disabled. How is it setup? Do we need to get Lan splitter?

Should work. For most routers, 2 nodes are usually enough for a 4 room bto, but I find that sometimes signal gets bad in the corners of the house, so I usually recommend 3 if possible. Also, do check the Ethernet vs wireless backhaul for your setup

Thank you for the video, it is very informative. If you put your main router in the DB Box, will the WIFI signal be degraded when the cupboard is closed? If i want to put my main mesh router in a central area of my apartment, does that mean that I need 2 ethernet ports at that location? One for WAN and one for Wired backhaul
@SherBooga
@SherBooga Ай бұрын
Yes the signal will not be able to reach as far as it could have. Supposedly you have 2 mesh nodes, the main one will have to take in the WAN, and then 1 more for Ethernet backhaul, the other node will need to have 1 to accept the Ethernet.

It is possible. But if you need to connect another device to the router from the bedroom, for example, a pc. it is not possible to do so unless you have a way to get the router in the living room to connect back to the db box and then to the bedroom pc. If you have no such requirement, then putting the router in the living room is no issue.

@SherBooga
@SherBooga 7 ай бұрын
Unfortunately, packet loss can be due to a lot of things. One way in which I think you can start troubleshooting is to start eliminating possible issues. I would suggest connecting via ethernet cable to the router directly and see if you have those issues. After that, connect via ethernet to the range extender to make sure that the range extender is the issue. You can also try if connecting via WiFi to the range extender has lesser/more packet loss and find the cause of the issue from there. Unfortunately, you're right. Range extenders from how you described it should be running on power lines which is known to cause intermittent connection issues, it's still best to connect to ethernet ports. Hope it'll not be too costly when you eventually make the upgrade!

1. **Modem:** - A modem (short for modulator-demodulator) is a device that connects your home network to your internet service provider (ISP). It translates digital data from your network into a format that can be transmitted over your ISP's infrastructure. 2. **Router:** - A router is a critical device for managing the distribution of internet connectivity within your home network. It connects to the modem and directs internet traffic to different devices in your home. 3. **Access Points (APs):** - Access points are devices that extend the reach of your Wi-Fi network, especially in larger homes or areas with poor signal coverage. They connect to the router and provide additional wireless coverage. 4. **Ethernet Switch:** - Ethernet switches are used to expand the number of wired Ethernet ports available in your home network. They allow you to connect multiple devices using Ethernet cables. 5. **Ethernet Cables:** - Ethernet cables are used to establish wired connections between devices such as computers, gaming consoles, and smart TVs and the router or switch. They come in various lengths. 6. **Wi-Fi Extenders/Repeaters:** - These devices are used to boost Wi-Fi signals in areas with weak coverage. They capture the existing Wi-Fi signal and amplify it, extending the range of your wireless network. 7. **Coaxial Cable and Splitters:** - Coaxial cables are used for cable TV and cable internet connections. Splitters can divide the signal to connect multiple devices. 8. **Phone Jacks and Filters:** - Phone jacks and DSL (Digital Subscriber Line) filters are used for traditional landline phone connections, allowing both telephone and internet services to coexist on the same line. 9. **Fiber Optic Cables (Optional):** - Fiber optic cables are used for ultra-high-speed internet connections. These cables transmit data using light signals and provide extremely fast internet speeds. 10. **Network Adapters:** - Network adapters, such as Wi-Fi adapters or Ethernet cards, are used in devices like laptops or desktop computers to connect to the network. 11. **Network-Attached Storage (NAS) (Optional):** - A NAS device allows you to store and share data on your home network, making files and media accessible to all connected devices. 12. **Firewall and Security Devices (Optional):** - Firewalls and security devices enhance network security by monitoring and filtering network traffic to protect against unauthorized access and threats. 13. **Structured Wiring Panels (Optional):** - These panels are used in more complex installations to centralize and organize all network and communication connections within a home. 14. **Smart Home Hubs/Gateways (Optional):** - For smart home automation, hubs or gateways may be used to connect and control various smart devices like lights, thermostats, and cameras. 15. **Powerline Adapters (Optional):** - Powerline adapters use your home's electrical wiring to transmit network data. They can be useful in areas where Wi-Fi signals are weak.

Hi great video! For a 4 room bto layout, but with most walls knocked down such that there is only one large living/dining room + one larger master bedroom, would it better with 2 mesh nodes (1 in the db box and 1 in the master bedroom) or better than with 1 router in the db box (say, ASUS RT-AX3000 with more ports) and 1 mesh node in the master bedroom? Assuming the mesh nodes are all via wired backhaul
@SherBooga
@SherBooga Жыл бұрын
I think it really depends on whether you require the Ethernet ports or you're just purely using WiFi. I think both setups you mentioned are similar, but the biggest difference is probably the lack of ports. I think if you are mostly using WiFi, then you can go for 2 mesh nodes and if you really need the ethernet ports, you can get a network switch later on to supplement.

The wireless signal will be similarly affected since they are impeded by the db door. However because of the lack of ethernet ports, you may or may not be able to connect to all patch panel ports (D1-D6) to provide ethernet access to all rooms. Typically a mesh node only has about 2-3 ports and with one already being used by the modem, you're only left with limited ports for the other rooms. So if I were in your shoes, I will put the router here. The other room could have the mesh node if you don't need ports. However, as most mesh nodes come in 2-3packs, unless you have an extra mesh node lying around.

Actually, balconies, a lot of people got it because the older HDB can seal it up with windows to extend their existing rooms. However, the BTO balconies are not allowed to be sealed fully resulting in many hitting this gotcha at key collection / renovation. Those who want to make full use of the space either use as outdoor dirty space or go around the problem by "sealing it up" with blinds. As such, ZipTracks / ZipScreens 1% open is a popular choice to "by-pass" this in a way that is inline with regulations (That it cannot be completely sealed) Some secretly install those 0% transparent ones and basically keep them permanently shut and from far nobody can tell anyway.
