How To Jump Start A Prius

This video shows you how to jump start a Toyota Prius car if the battery is low.
1. Open the hood of the Prius.
2. Remove the fuse box cover.
3. Flip up the red terminal cover and attach the red positive jumpstart cable to it.
4. Attach the black negative cable to the engine.
5. Connect the other ends of the jumper cables to a car battery.
6. Start the engine of the car and let it run for 5 minutes.
7. Get in your Prius and start the engine.
8. Disconnect the jumper cables.
9. Drive the Prius for at least 15 minutes to charge up the battery.

I actually used your video to help a woman today to jump start her car that I had no idea on how to do along with another guy who bailed on her. She was so very grateful and tipped me $10 for the help where at the same time I felt so guilty taking her money being that I felt that I learned a lesson, thanks to you, that the knowledge was greater than the $10 she gave me.

Omg, You saved my ass!!! I am babysitting my neighbors Prius while they are gone. Thx for video. Prius 12v batteries last a long time but with the car doing so many things once it turns off you gotta have a battery tender hooked up and plugged in whenever you park it for more than a day.

I don't understand the part about "letting it run" I assume this refers to the car one is using to jump the battery. When I've used a portable battery jump starter on the Prius battery under the back floorboard, that only takes a second and the car starts. Is using the devise under the hood different from that? Thanks I'm doing this today.

Yes. The Toyota Prius has a regular 12 V battery in it.

One thing to mention in this video is after running the jumper car for 5 mins- shut off the jumper and Then start the dead car. Not good to have both cars running their alternators

I changed the 12v battery on my 2009 prius about 3-4 years ago. Is been working good wothout any problems. Today car its completly dead, no ligjts or nothing. I even changed the control battery too. Should i jump it and if it works will it be better just to replace 12v battery again??? Car did not give me any warning or nothing. Its just dead.

I would check the terminals on the 12 V battery first, and see if they are corroded and clean them off. Then try charging the battery.

If you want to trickle charge the trunk battery, some trickle chargers need to be on AGM setting

Where else can you hook the negative lead if your cables aren't long enough to reach so far apart?

Anywhere on the car that is grounded. Any bolt on the car should work.

You could try hooking the jumper cables directly to the battery. The battery is located in the back of the car on the passenger side. You can find videos where people show you the location of the battery. It’s pretty easy to get to.

@@hoohoohoblinit’s not easy to get to, because the trunk is locked by the dead system. You have to hire a monkey to crawl in the trunk and manually trip the lever after pulling up the cover.

I believe this is for the battery powering the lights/dash etc. NOT the actual engine/car battery which powers the electric drivetrain

So I got a jump last night and the company told me to drive for 45min at least, the faster the better. I didn't do that at all last time. Will you comment on that?

I don’t know if you need to go for a full 45 minutes, but driving will definitely charge the battery back up. After you jumpstart it, the battery is still low, and the motor is trying to charge it up. They probably told you to drive fast so that the gas motor would be generating electricity.

If you buy the correct genuine Toyota True Start battery rather than the Inferior Mexican made Autozone special Optima then you don’t have to jump start.
