The Icelandic bind-off is a wonderful and quite quick to knit way to create a stretchy edge. Other stretchy bind-offs in knitting require you to knit extra stitches or slip stitches around. This method basically allows you to chain your stitches in a very smooth way. Is works particularly well for garter stitch but can be used for other knitting stitch patterns as well if you want a slightly more ornamental edge that is a bit more rounded.

I tried the Icelandic bind off for the first time on a garter stitch shawl. This is now my most favorite bind-off to use. The edge is beautiful. Thank you so much for sharing this with us!

Thanks for this, Norman. This would be a great bind off for shawls that have mohair and not much definition.

By pure coincidence I've been looking at videos of Icelandic bind off as it was mentioned as a possible technique to use for a shawl I've been knitting. Your tutorial is by far the clearest! Thanks Norman

Thanks i did it with a crochet hook and for me it was much neater than with needles, it did lose some stretch.

Thank you for this video. I tried to do Icelandic bind off on a shawl once and it didn't come out well. Having seen your video I realise that I wasn't dealing with the second stitch correctly, ie not putting the needle back through the first stitch before wrapping the yarn. Small things make such a difference and for this reason your videos are a gift

yes,..if you look at it very closesly, the only difference between this method and the standard bind-off is the position of the thread connecting two stitches. So, yes, small differences matter a lot!

Hi Norman. Great tutorial. I really like the Icelandic Bind Off. We used it for a couple of projects. You’re instruction is always so clear. Thank you for showing the 2 different ways. I only learned the first. Have a wonderful week!🤗🤗

That's a great method. I hadn't heard of it before. It was easy to see on the video how it accomplished the bind off all in basically one stitch. I will try this method next time I bind off. Thanks!

I always liked this bind off and I use it a lot, but have always slipped the stitch twisted, just the way I was taught. It also makes a great contrast edge if bind off in a different colour.

I enjoy knitting garter stitch based projects, so will definitely give this a try. Somehow the manipulation reminds me of Norwegian purling, although I know it’s not the same thing.

This is my favorite bind off for garter stitch!! A book I have that has this bind off doesn’t have you knit the first stitch, just inserting needle through first st on left hand needle, commencing with bind off. Does knitting that first st help to keep the piece “squared off” / corner?? Hmmm… I haven’t tried this w stockinette though. Would this work nicely w st st? Any downside w st st? I think you have me thinking of the mechanics of knitting/stitches!!! I learn so much from your videos, Thank You very much!

well, I think it really depends a lot on the circumstances and preferences (i.e. in the round vs flat, ...do you actualyl want rounded corners, etc) Also, I just have an inkling that a lot of teachers/books just copy instructions rather than really working on them. And that often leads to the same mistakes being repeated all over. At the end of the day, you can use any bind-off for any knitting stitch pattern. Only a swatch can tell you if a) you like it and b) it has enough (or too much) give for your project. I can't

Thanks, Norman! Since I use the Icelandic on shawls (mostly, or cowls), I never gave much thought to that first st, until I watched! Agree w you re perpetuating an un-tried technique. Which is why I devour your technique videos. I usually analyze (at times over-analyze) the “why” and “how” or “what-if” of my projects. You are more succinct! I’ve notebook pages devoted (😅) to all those things on many of my projects! I understand that a swatch/test of xyz technique would be best. Again, I thank you for ALL your technique videos, I’m always learning a new-to-me tip/trick, and I appreciate when you discuss the “why” and “ how”!! I’m still going thru videos I haven’t watched. Thank You!

Hi Norman. My name is Terry I live in Utah USA. First i want to say thank you for all you do. I e learned so much from your videos. I just knitted a shawl in stockingette stich. Its a cresant shape with a 5 inch ruffle on the bottom edge. I am ready to bind off but i am not sure what technique to use. Everything Ive tried so far makes the edge roll. I have over 1,000 stitches on my circular needles. What bind off would you recommend? Thank you Terry

your shawl curls because of the stockinette stitch. you need a true border not just a bind-off. that part has almost no influence on the curling.
