I used this on the garter stitch buttonhole bands and back neck of a cardigan I knit for my granddaughter. I found using one size larger needle to bind off helped. I would never have tried it without your help.

Merci Suzanne, as usual this is a very usefull video, very well filmed with many details and explanations on the movements of the needles, the structure of the stitches and the video is slow enough so we have time to catch everything and to practice at the same time. you are a great teacher! I can't believe I have been doing this bind off wrong! When I read how to do it, I misinterpreted the instruction to "insert the needle through the second stitch as if to knit". I've been going through that stitch and straight out the back. Then I yarn over and pull the knit st through both stitches. Watching your video very closely, I see that you are going through that st and then back out through the first st so only one st is over the right needle when you yarn over for the knit st. I DO NOT RECOMMEND MY METHOD as it results in just a slight variation of the standard bind off. It does not make a decorative bind off like the Icelandic bind of is intended to be. Thanks so much for the clear video showing the correct way to do it.

Hi, I tried this bind off both in garter stitch and in stockinette, following your advices. it is quick and easy. It is really beautifull in garter stitch because it allows the fabric to stay very flat, the edge is exactly like another garter stitch row and doesn't bend or curve on the front side, like a regular bind off. So it is completely reversible. In stockinette, it is interesting and even decorative because it produces a little ridge almost like a little i-cord but the fabric rolls on it self (not so much..) Catherine (sorry for me"french" english style of writing...) PS: 300 stitches in a minute Suzanne? yeah!

Suzanne, should one "tweak" what will become the last stitch on the bind-off row to prevent an enlarged final stitch? In other words, should one use a reverse stitch mount for the 2nd stitch on the last row before the bind-off? For anyone reading this, Suzanne's video on preventing an enlarged last stitch is excellent!

Thanks for the video. Would this be stretchy enough for a toe-up sock cuff?
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 4 жыл бұрын
This is not one that I would use for a toe up sock unless you want to use it as a design element. It would not go well with ribbing. But - here are two links to stretchy bind off videos that I have made recently. Try a couple of swatches with these and test them out and see which one(s) work for you. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/n9Z7lMVzzq-YZKM.html, and kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oZ2Yh6V61Zu7cqs.html.

Hi Suzanne. Yet another great video. I have made a baby jacket that has a garter stitch yoke, Question: Is this bind off pliable enough to use as a bind off for the neck edge?I had intended to work a sewn cast off as it almost replicates the garter stitch. I would appreciate your thoughts. Michelle UK

It looks to me like this is the same as slip1, knit1 and pass the slipped stitch over the knitted stitch. However, you're doing it in one fluid motion. Is this the process I am seeing? Looks good!
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, what you are describing is the standard bind off. In this bind off, the stitch is knit first, then you go through that stitch to work into the next stitch. Similar but quite different. Thanks for commenting. Happy Knitting.
@csdurch
@csdurch 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! So, you're actually passing the stitch over before knitting that next stitch. Therefore, the yarn ends up on the right or top side of that slipped stitch instead of under that slipped stitch. Thus, giving a little more ease in the slipped stitch.

And a prettier bind off.
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 6 жыл бұрын
Yes. Grab some needles and a bit of yarn and try it. I do a lot of experimenting with swatches. It makes it clearer in my mind when I can see my hands going through the motions. You can compare the two bind offs, standard - vs - this one and see the difference in real life. This gives a more pronounced and rounder edge. More decorative and somewhat reminiscent of a small i-cord edge.

Is there a matching icelandic cast on? Thank you for all the wonderful tutorials Suzanne!!
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 6 жыл бұрын
Not really. But I will tell you a little trick I use to make a nice garter looking edge. You can do this on both the cast on and bind off edges. It is super simple and looks lovely. CO in Long Tail. Then you will work 2 rows or rounds of reverse Stockinette st, then go to Stockinette. So, if your first row/round in a RS, purl all the way around or across, then work the second row in knit or round in purl. This gives a nice little garter looking ridge right at the edge of the fabric. If you are about to bind off, work 2 rows/rnds of reverse Stockinette, then bind off. Let me know what you think. I love hearing your comments.

I will give that a go, sounds good to me! Thanks for the explanation.. I'm currently doing the tubular cast on in the round and the cuf for a pair of fingerless mittens; your tutorials and pattern :-) That explaines maybe my interest in matching cast ons and bind offs....I'll post it later in the group on ravelry okay?

I've knitted a swatch using your trick Suzanne. It is drying at the moment. Shall I share it in the group on Ravelry? I have written my own 'instructions ' on what I did. Hopefully that is what you meant? I noticed 1 thing....the bind off looks a bit 'more' than the cast on. Do you know what I mean?

On very pink knits Stacey repositioned the knit stitch to "untwist", rather than a simple point to point slip.
@SuzanneBryan
@SuzanneBryan 5 жыл бұрын
Try both ways and see which you prefer. This is a variation of the decrease bind off. In the standard decrease bind off, the finished edge has a chain, knit stitches. In the Icelandic bind off the finished edge has a garter or purl edge which is what makes it so interesting. In order to get that purl edge, the stitches should be worked as shown in my video. If you turn the stitch before working it, you get the knit edge. In the books "Cast On Bind Off" by Leslie Ann Bestor and "Cast On, Bind Off" by Cap Sease, both authors slip that stitch back to the left needle tip to tip. Thank you for watching my video and commenting. I love researching knitting. Happy knitting.
