DESCRIPTION
The Italian Cast On is a ribbing cast on. This means that it was specifically designed for use with a 1x1 ribbing stitch. This cast on has a distinctive, seamless look and an extremely stretchy edge. It works wonderfully on scarves and hats.

This cast-on was the only one I was taught by my mum so it became the one I used for almost all my projects (as I only learned the longtail cast-on much later), even scarves (unless I add tassles)... I also use this for 2x2 ribbing when I want the ribbing to look a little more substantial. 👍👍👍 Thank you Johnny~!

Thank you. You have made one Aussie a very happy knitter. This is such a hassle free technique to get that cast on edge that sits perfectly with the ribbed bask on a jumper...sorry sweater. Other techniques I looked at to achieve this involved using needles of different sizes and 2 different yarns...too fiddly! Once again, thank you!!

I'm fairly new to knitting and I might be confused. I first came across this video and then found your earlier video on the same subject back in 2012. The 2012 video started out in a completely different direction. Should I assume this one you made in 2015 is the one you prefer us all to watch? Also, I wanted to see how to bind off and thought I found one of your videos about it but was confused because on the 2015 cast-on video you always said the 1st stitch was a purl stitch but on your bind off video, you said the 1st stitch is a knit stitch. Could you point me in the direction of a bind off video that will work with this cast-on video? Thanks so much! Your videos are very easy to see all that's happening.

I am a rather experienced knitter and crocheter but wanted to learn more cast on techniques. This one is difficult not to get too tight which I have not had an issue with other techniques. It also likes to twist when completing the first row - janky as shit! Maybe it works better with non-natural fibers. Not the vlogger's fault. However, tip to vlogger - show steps slow with stops the first time, then show steps in smooth flowing motion and slow-medium speed without stops.

Is this basically a reverse-facing provisional cast on where you use the same strand instead of two? It feels like you repeat the last part twice and then do the first part.

Thanks so much for your reply (below). Just to clarify (and as a suggestion for furure tutorials), it’s not so much that you’re going too fast in this one as that you’re stopping, going back, starting again, pausing to comment, etc. What I’d really like is, somewhere in the video, a few seconds of like five slowly executed repetitions of the stitch without pausing or reversing. Too, don’t assume you’re a bad continental instructor - the way you’re casting on here (holding yarn in left hand and essentially “picking” with the right) is actually perfect for continental knitters. :)
@yarnistco
@yarnistco 5 жыл бұрын
I hear you. In most of my technique videos I do have a section where I demonstrate the technique, usually near the end. Guess I didn't do that here, but it's possible I did in one of the other versions: Original Version: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nbVmp5iE2Z2bfoE.html Provisional Version: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/as2BlMWmvM67Y2Q.html Two Color Version: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nNl8n6aJtL2-j5s.html I have filmed many continental videos over the years, I just can't stand purling and I make WAY more mistakes, which takes longer to film, edit, etc... But thank you for the encouragement.

@@yarnistco Just out of curiosity, when you do continental, do you knit/purl in the front or the back of the stitch? Are your continental videos here for me to see?
@katekudirka4823
@katekudirka4823 5 жыл бұрын
@@yarnistco I just did a little video showing exactly how I knit/purl. I actually didn't know that my style had a name (see title of video) until I researched to see how many other people were going into the back of the stitch on the regular. Going into the back helps with purling, I think, and training the yarn-holding finger to smoothly move the yarn back and forth over the needle between knit and purl helps, too. There are some great speed-knitting videos utilizing Continental/Russian method that break down all movements and show how to keep only the necessary ones. The video I just made: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9Vnf8yptL-9XWw.html

I love (seriously) that you’re spending the time to do these tutorials, but I do just have one request - at a certain point in the (any) video, could you please do a few stitches very slowly and smoothly and without pausing at all? I totally get the explaining at the beginning, but especially with tricky ones like this, it’s really easy to lose track/rhythm unless I can see the whole thing from start to finish with no break. Also, unlike most Americans, I knit (self-taught) Continental, and I rely heavily on video instructions because no knitters I know personally can teach me anything that doesn’t end up with everybody crying. Thank you and mad props.
@yarnistco
@yarnistco 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback. I don't have any plans to revisit any of our previous videos, but I will definitely consider adding a section like you've requested for future technique videos. In the meantime you can control the speed of a video by clicking on the "gear box" icon. That will let you speed up or slow down a video as needed. I don't knit continental style so I would not be a good person to demonstrate anything in that style. I'm quite clumsy with that style. One day I hope to employ other teachers who can make tutorials in different styles.

Right at the end seems to be contradictory because he says begin with a purl, then points to the third Stitch to explain orientation and the voiceover says knit but his indication is Purl. Of course you can figure it out yourself because if you're doing it wrong it will clearly show. You got a 50-50 chance.
