This video knitting tutorial will help you learn how to knit the italian cast on. This method of starting a project is great for 1x1 ribbing as well as brioche. It is almost invisible and has a great amount of stretch, making is perfect for cuffs on socks and sleeves as well as hats.

NewStitchADay - Other videos of this cast on method instruct that for the next 2 to 4 rows they knit the knits and slip the purls with yarn in front. Then they continue knitting the knits and purling the purls for as tall as they want the ribbing to be. Do you also do that? If so, I would suggest you make a 'Part 2' / 2nd video to demonstrate that. Also an answer here would be nice to know.

My problem is the first row starts with a Slip 1 and the stitches just fall off the needle??? How do I make this work???

Oh... I think I figured it out... the row starts with a S1 and then K1.... I had to bring the yarn behind to K1 instead of between the needles... it worked!!! Yay!!!

There is, Italian cast off, it takes ages and ages and ages but the result is (mostly) worth it!

You quickly skimmed over that 'it's the wrong direction' part..... It would have been nice to know why it's important to have a specific direction there.

Worked through this carefully. It looks like yours, but when I go to knit the stitches, they kind of disintegrate on me. Suggestions?

Because it's much stretchier than a standard cast on, so it works well with ribbing :)

Because it’s the most stretchy and beautiful cast on you can have on ribbing!

It’s ok to be frustrated but remember to give yourself some grace when learning a new technique. Practice and you will eventually get it. The Italian cast on and bind off are some of my favorite methods for the nice rolled hem look it gives necklines, cuffs, and hems.

The video shows how to do the cast on. It does not show how to knit it as the title leads you to believe.

Because it's just the cast on. You can knit any cast on, really. If you want to learn to knit, you have a lot more videos to watch. But for this one, it's a 1x1 rib cast on. Knit the knits and purl the purls.

What do Italian people do, then? :-) The names in foreign languages are often misleading this way. Like French fries aren't really French and bohemian people aren't from Bohemia...
