The irony in loneliness is that we all share in the experience of it. In this episode of How to Build a Happy Life, we sit down to discuss isolated living and Americans’ collective struggle to create a relationship-centric life. As we continue along our journey to happiness, we ask: How can I build my life around people?
This episode features Dr. Vivek H. Murthy, the U.S. surgeon general.
This episode was produced by Rebecca Rashid and hosted by Arthur Brooks. Editing by A. C. Valdez. Fact-check by Ena Alvarado. Sound design by Michael Raphael.
Music by Trevor Kowalski (“Lion’s Drift,” “This Valley of Ours,” “Una Noche De Luces”), Stationary Sign (“Loose in the Park”), and Spectacles Wallet and Watch (“Last Pieces”).

I love that weekly exercise the surgeon does. That's real bonding right there & it's just 5 mins out of your day for a real quality human connection. Beautiful. I do catch myself thinking of only loved ones when I'm so depressed sulking in tears. Not materialistic things. Not money. Not social status. My kids, my family, my beautiful memories with them. Its irreplaceable, & invaluable. & this is coming from an introvert who spends 97% of the day alone or at least tries to...but its weird when you have that real connection moment. I cherish those always & replay them in my mind.

Thx for the good advice. Every young person shd tk notes cuz once u r in ur 50s relationship finding is daunting and discouraging. So much easier to cultivate relationships while U hv the friends vs decades later after losing friends to kids being grown and moving away, Job loss, divorces death retirement… it gets harder and harder

The loss of a spouse whose love made me feel so invincible I accomplished things that would have been unimaginable to anyone let alone me. BUT a freak accident stole hisife just before our 50th wedding anniversary a freak accident stole his life, derived of my "Magic Talisman" who made me fearless, I sunk into deep Depression & Despair & abandoned the life-pomoting habits we used to teach at World Congresses & after a decade of doing so, am hoping there's still time to belatedly Count My Blessings & pick up the pieces of our Audaciously, Auspicious. Ambitious BUT Altruistic Bucket List. HELP!!!!

I'll have to come back and listen to this another time period loneliness during the pandemic is something I've been researching myself. Especially in the context of the lack of human touch

Same here. But I figure that everyone is going to let me down, and I will let others down. That's the deal. You can't have any relationships without knowing ppl are imperfect. Every day, every relationship is a challenge bc ppl can be selfish and it hurts. But I can also be selfish so I hope they will extend the same grace and forgiveness to me as I do to them. I don't completely trust anyone, but I still work on my friendships. I think it's supposed to be hard, especially the older you get. I think I'm worth knowing, and I'm a good loving person. It takes practice, but most everyone has potential to be a good friend.

Thanks for your reminder and honesty about our own personal feelings! I definitely will of course send your true study to my own daughter who live far far away across the sea from her close friends and family members!

Healthy children in the future is my happy place and yet their chronic health issues can never be resolved. It only makes my true happiness unattainable. I have to pretend that there is hope when I know it is going to be worse as time precedes. It is a constant struggle to find your own happiness when the people around you are hurting.
