In Part 2, Master Shipwright Louis Sauzedde demonstrates his method for installing laminated frames during the restoration of his own 1948 Johan Anker 8-meter. In Part 1, Sauzedde cut the laminates and applied the glue, now watch as he installs the frame in place with the glue still wet, and uses screws to clamp the laminates together.

I hear you. I ended up here from a search about laminating wood with epoxy and I am now somewhat traumatised after seeing that grinder. Yikes! He's such a good builder though.

Mr Sauzedde, I'm a 68 yr old shipwright in NJ, with all that open space inside couldn't you have put in a solid piece of steam bent wood, measure first then pre-bend over a form. I avoid laminating a rib whenever possible, but when I must, I use resorcinol glue. White oak is slightly acidic which will cause the epoxy to fail, it will delaminate. Also, resorcinol is better in a wet enviroment, epoxy with wood is not, the wood swells slightly, the epoxy doesn't. I like your trick of tightening up the laminate.

I've done it although for me its the absolute last resort whereas he's pretty comfortable with it.But really when doing wood repair work and you need a decent cut on a heavy chunk of timber like oak in a tight spot there's not too many options.

The angle grinder with the saw blade has generated some comments and concerns, but notice he still has all his fingers... at the moment. : ) An I thought I was radical putting a 12"miter saw blade on my weed whipper brush cutter. LOL

If the regulator here in California (CALOSHA) caught you using that tool, the fine would be very large. Using modified tools like that can also violate your liability insurance.

I hate how they use steel bolts or screws in wood boats. Dealing now with the after effects of how Egg Harbor spiked all the floors into the keel on my 1970 37 footer. Had 2 floors rot out in forward hull which is the lowest part of the hull and collects all the water. Not only rust but also iron sickness, wood splitting, then rotting. The steel spike was completely dissolved halfway down in the floor. And a couple other floors have rust puddles where floor meets keel. Keel though is still solid. And if you have a 1 3/4" wide floor and drill for a 1/2" spike all the way through the floor to pin it to the keel, your also cutting the strength of the floor lumber a lot, turns it into a 1 1/4" thick piece of wood instead. I think they did that simply as their method of putting the boat together as I dont think these spikes are doing anything useful after the boat is constructed.

The way I repaired those 2 rotted floors, was cut off everything on the floor from 4 inches and lower, using a jig saw, leaving the upper unrotten part of the floor in place. Then cleaned out the rotted hole where spike was and glue in a small piece of wood to infill that area. Cut smaller pieces of PT SYP (ground contact wood), match to fit the frames (ribs) angle and glue them to the left over floor timber in sections, like 3 thinner pieces (total about 5 inches worth in height of PT SYP wood, to fit between keel and remaining floor timber. I then cut some red oak, (since I have tons of oak fencing boards) to like 37" long, by 5" tall by 1" thick and glue and screw to each side of the top original part of the floor timber using SS deck screws and PL glue mixed with sawdust. That way it fixes the strength issue of the worn and rotted old oak floors. I leave out the steel spike into the keel. The rot turned the wood to black soft mud, bad enough I could push a screw driver through the oak. But surprisingly the keel was still ok, including the spike hole which I glued in a dowel to plug it up. Back in 2005, I had reframed much of the boat with PTSYP, and it is still looking like new. In my boat, the floors sit on top of the frames.

@@scottdowney4318 Impressive sounding. I think southern yellow pine (pressure treated) is an excellent frame material if it is chosen for grain density. I have even ripped it into strips and made laminated knees from it by first pouring boiling water over them to bend into a form, then when dry, epoxy laminating them using the same form.

Is that boat going to sail anything like when it came in? Going from loose to tightened woodwork must be strange on the same boat.
