How to layer Faber-Castell Polychromos pencils in Johanna Basford's World of Flowers. Layering different colours on top of each other can create some great effects when you are using oil based pencils like Polychromos. In this video I will show you in real time, how I like to layer my pencils when colouring in adult colouring books.
I use oil based pencils very differently compared to wax based coloured pencils, and layering is really one of those methods that make Polychromos pencils shine. Applying lots of light, overlapping layers gives you the ability to create great gradients, which in turn can provide lots of depth and dimension to your colouring page.

Can't wait to start on this page, it's looking so pretty but, I most to finish the shelves page first. It requires patience to color like you do and I'm learning that too. I've been painting on canvas with acrylics for more than 45 years and when I discovered coloring books (3 months ago) I retired my acrylic mediums. There is another KZfaqr that loves to layer and layer colors with Polychromos pencils. It is Passion for Pencils Henny's way of coloring is a style all of her own. I have never seen any other artist on KZfaq color and paint like she does. If you want a new way of layering look at some tutorials that she has produced.

Beautiful work, it looks like you might be pushing a little to hard for blending. Lighten up your pressure. I hope this helps.

I can either get a set of polys or a set of luminance. I'm torn.

Hi Travis. What you get would depend on the way you would like to use them. The Polychromos is very translucent, and does best with lots of layering of different colours (the method I prefer for myself). The colours shine through one another, which creates some really cool effects. The Luminance are softer pencils, so would probably be a bit faster. I know a lot of professional artists who use those in place of Prismacolor, due to the higher quality.
