In this video, you will learn how to use The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2%, Alpha Arbutin 2% and Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%.
Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5
Targets - Hydration, Skin Repair
Format - Water-Based Serum
Regimen Step - Before Oils/Creams
Conflicts -
Time of Use - AM and PM
Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA
Targets - Hyper-pigmentation, Dark Spots
Format - Water-Based Serum
Regimen Step - Before Oils/Creams
Conflicts -
Time of Use - AM and PM
Azelaic Acid Suspension 10%
Targets - Dullness, Uneven Tone, Textural Irregularities, Antioxidant Support
Format - Suspension
Regimen Step - After Water-Based Serums
Conflicts - Do not combine with other strong acids, EUK 134 0.1% or Peptides.
Time of Use - Ideally PM
The general rule of thumb for the order of application is:
1. Water-based serums
2. Anhydrous Solutions and Oil Formulations
3. Lotions & Creams & suspensions
Important:
If you have more than one water-based serum, you can apply based on the priority of your concern (the product that targets the most important concern should go first). And it’s recommended applying eye-serums (such as Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG) first after cleansing.
It’s recommended using no more than 3 serum formulations in a single routine for optimal skin penetration.
About 2-3 drops of each serum and 1 pea-sized amount of creams should be enough for the full face and neck.
Use a "patting" application method, as opposed to "rubbing."
Always apply sunscreen when you are exposed to the sun!!
Some products can have a foaming effect upon application depending on the other products you are using in your regimen. The foaming should not last longer than a few seconds and both should not remain sticky once absorbed into the skin. (Video: • The Ordinary Niacinami... )
"Pilling" (snakeskin, shedding) can occur due to too much product. Your skin can only absorb a certain amount of product, and any excess will be left on top of the skin so that when the next product is being applied, it rubs off. (Video: • The Ordinary Product "... )

from the videos that i have watched about this routine, this seems to be the most underrated routine. the popularity of niacinamide this year kind off overshadowed this combo and I have been trying it for about 2 months now and it is great. i used to use niacinamide twice a day but now i just use it at night since i like using vitamin c with this routine sometimes as well and i have seen great improvement on my skin. Alpha Arbutin + Azelaic Acid is going to be so popular for 2021 :). I also heard that this is a great substitute for Retinol for pregnant woman since Retinol is not recommended during pregnancy and breast feeding. love this routine Melissa!

Hey! For how long have you been using Alpha Arbutin and Niacinamide? Well, you may want to have a look at the Ordinary Peptides and/or the Ordinary Retinoids. When choosing Peptides, keep in mind that they shouldn't be used it the same routine as exfolianting acids (AHA or BHA) and Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid). And Buffet + Copper Peptides shouldn't be used with "strong" Antioxidants as well. As for Peptides, I like the Buffet + Copper Peptides and/or for Retinoids, I like the Granactive Retinoid 2% in Emulsion. So you have most of the skin lightening products haha :P Niacinamide, Alpha Arbutin, Azelaic Acid and Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2% can help you to lighten dark spots. I mainly also depends what kind of dark spots you have. Also using an Acid, like Lactic Acid or Glycolic Acid can help to lighten dark spots along with any of the other products as well. I recently made a video about it: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ad94nq9jx5itYZ8.html Hope this helps!

Hello Melissa, I’d just like to say - I am loving your videos as they are my go-to to learn how to apply skincare products perfectly 😄 I had a little query with regards to timing of application. I’m currently using Alpha Arbutin (+ Ascorbic Acid) AND Azelaic Acid. I was wondering how many exact minutes I should leave in between, after applying Alpha Arbutin. I suffer from hyperpigmentation, I was wondering whether I should be adding any other ingredients into skincare routine to help this issue? Thanks in advance 😄

@@MelissaVanDijkOfficial Oh wow, thank you for the reply. That video came at a great timing 😃 Yes, I currently use the Ascorbic Acid + Alpha Arbutin solution, along with the Azelaic Acid suspension. I use the CeraVe SA Cleanser + Rosewater Toner + CeraVe Moisturising Lotion as well. I started using them a year ago. However, I have only used one of them at a time, 2-3 times a week on average. So will look to follow everyday use with both of them together. My hyperpigmentation is just an uneven skin across my face. I have medium to dark brown skin and I would like to remove excess hyperpigmentation and make it nice, even and balanced I also struggle with heavily-pronounced dark circles (mostly due to genetics). It looks very noticeable, and has become an insecurity of mine so would like to make it better. So therefore, Do you have any suggestions on additional ingredients to buy for the uneven face skin tone + dark circles? Once again, thanks for much for being of such help 😃😃😃
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
I would switch to an exfoliant, either TO Lactic Acid 10% (gentler) or Glycolic Acid (a bit stronger). Use one of them after cleansing but before your moisturiser. If your dark circles are genetic, there isn't much that you can do other than seeing a doctor for this concern.

Hi , lovely and very clear content , can i ask you about layering : I wash my face, dry it then use directly a vit c ( which is the lightest serum in my am routine ) then wait and add the ordinary Alpha arbutin then wait and add some water mist then add the ordinary HA ( I’ve learnt that it’s better to add it to a wet face ) then lock everything with a moisturizer. Is this a good layering ? thank you so much for your time
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! :) Yes, this can work and if it works for you keep on doing it! However, nowadays most Hyaluronic Acid serum contain either Sodium Hyaluronate or hydrolysed Hyaluronic (which are the most common ones). If your serum mentions one of them or maybe more but not actual Hyaluronic Acid, you can either apply it on dry or on damp skin, it won't change the efficacy since those can penetrate the skin. Whereas, Hyaluronic Acid is too large to penetrate and therefore it is recommended to use it on damp skin and then 'seal' it with a moisturiser.

@MelissaVanDijkOfficial
@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Here is what The Ordinary says: Previously, we did not have a contraindication listed for the use of direct acids/Vitamin C with any of our peptides. However, we now have a huge arsenal of these products and some of the formulations are more susceptible to hydrolysis with certain types of Vitamin C or acids. Instead of developing a complex guide listing the compatibility of each of our peptides with each acid and Vitamin C, we have adapted the following approach to maximize efficacy for the maximum number of people: It is best to not use Peptides in the same routine as the following products: Direct acids, LAA (L-Ascorbic Acid) and ELAA (Ethylated Ascorbic Acid). In addition, we would recommend avoiding the use of products containing copper peptides in the same routine as strong antioxidants as well as direct acids/LAA/ELAA.

@MelissaVanDijkOfficial 2 жыл бұрын
Hmm, which Alpha Arbutin are you using? 🤔 Or do you mean the following "in the presence of water if the pH of the formulation is not ideal"? That is only an issue for the company that is formulating the serum. You do not lock in the moisture with The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid. Because it cannot soak more water into it, that is only an issue for a real Hyaluronic Acid formulation. But in general, I think it doesn't really matter with the formulations present on the market, it's also just an issue for the company that is formulating the product. So you can use Hyaluronic Acid, wait for 30seocnds to 1 minute and follow with Alpha Arbutin and lastly, your moisturizer (if needed)

Oh, ok! So, are you using Paula's Choice Discoloration serum? Hm..in that case, you need to see what layering would be more suitable for your skin and moisturiser that you are using. Do you have any tips or recommendations? (I don't use all the products together btw)

Those products may only help if you have hyperpigmentation that was caused by sun damage if yours was caused by a nutrition deficency or something similar it may not sure any results at all. But I am not sure if you watched my recent videos where I have tried the products myself and the best one was Ascorbic Acid and Alpha Arbutin it showed results after 1Month the other weren't really impressive. So what kind of hyperpigmentation do you have and have you already consulted a dermatologist? 🤔
