I guess I’m type 5, the kind of learner that is very distracted by the fact that that clock is clearly broken and stuck on 4:20…? 😅

This is a pretty good classification. It explains a lot of the different advice you get online. I’m a type 2 and feel so guilty about my low tolerance for boring but level accurate content. Olly’s graded readers for intermediates would be perfect for me but I’m bored to death by them from the beginning. I barely get through chapter 1 and never go back later for chapter 2. But I’ve already read several books written for natives. And it’s helping but I can tell if I read level appropriate content it would go faster. But at least I have tolerance for ambiguity. Thank god. I feel really bad for the type 4 people. I guess it makes sense they’re the largest group because most people fail at foreign languages.

I don't "feel really bad" for Type 4s, but like you said, it explains a lot about why immersion learning is such a foreign (hehe) concept to most people. "What do you mean I have to engage with very basic things that I don't understand? Why would being horribly bored and annoyed help me with my language learning?" And that's a huge reason why we think it's so important to understand your own learner type and pick content accordingly. Anyone can learn a language, but NOT everyone can learn a language the exact same way. This is also why we recommend reading MUCH earlier than some "all immersion" folks. It's simply not an approach that is going to work for the average person on the street unless they can have something "concrete" do to and focus on. - Ben

@@Refold Maybe you don’t realize how hard it is haha. If I had to rely on textbooks and graded readers I would be doomed. Literally doomed. If I were on my own at least and most adult learners are on their own. But a good class can do wonders (only time I ever completed a textbook) and I’m sure good language coaching can help too although I haven’t tried it. But really, if I had low tolerance for both, I’d probably just look for a different hobby. Unless there were another reason to learn like you’re moving to the country.

Great content as usual! I'm really glad I found your channel - it's such a pleasure going through the videos and applying all the concepts to my language learning routine. Thanks for all your efforts! Watching this I realize I'm a type 4 learner, which explains why it's been so hard for me to find immersion content to consume, even though on the surface there's tons. I've actively been working on increasing my tolerance for ambiguity for a while now though (after starting to watch Matt vs Japan and later Refold), which really helps.

I'm a Type 2 learner. I find native content very interesting and there are plenty of shows with TL subs. I am willing to tolerate ambiguity, as long as I watch something I like.

Seems like Im a type 2, idk. In practice I found the most efficient method for me, at least its still working for me. I watch videos in KZfaq without subtitles, understand some part of it, depends on video, but I dont care. After watching video if it wasn't "one-time" video, and I feel, that I can watch/listen it few times, I add it to special youtube playlist and import it to LingQ. Sometimes I just listen videos😂 in that playlist during walking as a podcast( shuffled). And as a more active learning, I daily sort content in LingQ by percentage of new words, pick 5-10 of them, and at first watch them, after listen while reading subtitles ( via LingQ, of course with monolingual translations and lingqs creation, if needed). Still works for me.

I think I'm type 2. I don't mind pressing back on videos, checking up on vocab, etc. But can't stand when it's all "child speak" so to say. I do enjoy dubbed content depending on the show but native mostly. Thank you so much for the video! :)

Thanks for the explanation. Really appreciate it. I want to ask something: when i was like..... Learning some things in japanese, i will listen first, then repeat it then write it. For other things like anime, i just needed to hear it once and i still remember it both the word and the pitch. Should i continue this way?

Like if your type 1 I want to know how many of us there are. And there is no other motive for this at all.

I guess I'm type 1.5. I start watching soap operas in my TLs pretty early on. With the over the top acting there's no need for subtitles 😂. I also enjoy kids' shows aimed at 8-12 year olds. However, I CANNOT stand videos made for learners where they teach you the names of fruits or need a 10-min video to show you how to conjugate a verb. And don't get me started on super slow audio with exaggerated pronunciation, they make my ears bleed.
