My original idea was to share this music sheet with you for free, but I had to take it down due to copyright infringement. (Yep, the melody of Autumn Leaves is not old enough just to share it freely.) Luckily, I got some help and now I could re-publish it again through musicnotes.com.
Sheet Music: mnot.es/2sFHu7m
About this lesson:
1. Most of the time I follow what is written, but still, you might find some differences here and there.
2. These are the basic steps I follow whenever I learn a new standard. You will benefit a lot from going through these steps too.
3. BEFORE STEP 1: Listen to this song a lot and to try to learn it by ear. (Lyrics too)
4. I am going to upload 6 different arrangements for Autumn Leaves + impro and stuff. (You already heard two of the arrangement at the beginning of this video)
Basically you will get a Complete Autumn Leaves Workout. Very soon. Stay tuned.
About "faking jazz"
Please, if you have the time check out "Universal Mind of Bill Evans". • Universal Mind of Bill...
Here is a teaser: "People tend to approximate the product rather than attacking it in a realistic, true way at any elementary level - regardless of how elementary - but it must be entirely true and entirely real and entirely accurate. hey would rather approximate the entire problem than to take a small part of it and be real and true about it. To approximate the whole thing in a vague way gives you a feeling that you’ve more or less touched the thing, but in this way you just lead yourself toward confusion and ultimately you’re going to get so confused that you’ll never find your way out."
0:00 Intro
0:20 Mindset
1:08 Step 1 - Melody + Syncopation
2:04 Step 2 - Syncopated Melody + Root Notes
2:59 Step 3 - Melody + Two-Feel Bass Line
3:58 Step 4 - Melody + Shell Voicings
4:51 Step 5 - All in One

There are just a few things that stop the ear player from reaching their goals. The main two are knowing immediately five octaves on paper and timing. I think these are gold. My ear picks it up but the more It read the better we get it. The best.

THank you so much. This is exactly what I need. Did the baby classical stuff and can read, but never learnt how to put an accompaniment to a tune. Going off to practice now, but I'll be back.

Terrific piece and great tutorial with masterful pedagogy! May I ask who the composer and lyricist is and what is a feel base? This is my first Jazz piece- my background is classical. I enjoy this song's melody, what are the lyrics like and how does one play this by ear? Thank you for providing the score. I really like your advice to play the music out that is within us and when we are uninspired play from the music score-excellent advice. I will diligently study this song with you and can't wait until tomorrow to learn the scales associated with this song. Thank You for freely sharing with us:)

good stuff! I usually go straight to melody then voicings left hand, but I see what you mean by this! this way we understand better the sound of the melody with the root of the cords, and with more complex voicings it's a bit harder to understand that! The reason I do this way is because I have so little time to practice everyday and want to go straight to the advanced stuff, but with time I've come to the conclusion that the basics are very well spent time, and not a waste of time :) thanks for the video, an inspiration for me! btw I have one request, can you make a how to learn with a different song? because I believe the step 5 works well with autumn leaves, but I believe we must adapt for other songs :) Godspeed!

When I play a new tune I also arpeggiate the 1-5 as you did. However, if it's say, a C chord for the entire bar, then I play LH C-G-C-G on beats 1234 Is this still a two feel since it's not a walking bassline? Or would I have to play C-G on Beats 1 and 3? Also, why is the 2 feel a good way to go about learning a new piece?

You have great content, but please respond to the questions people ask. It's the correct way to show people that you care. If you are too busy, it's a good idea to get moderators to help. We all need to feel that we are being heard, just as you do. Take care.

My friend, I hear you and what you say is true. I love to dedicate all my time to creating new piano lessons and I know that the downside of this creative work is that I am very slow at replying to messages. I can just hope that in the end, my lessons can make up for the lack of my social engagements. When it comes to moderators I don't think I want that... when I say thank you, or anything else, I want you to know that it comes from me. However, as an alternative solution to this problem, I have a website where you can contact us and we get in touch with you within a few days. Take care.
