Scott's Bass Lessons

Scott's Bass Lessons

Күн бұрын

In this lesson I'm going to cover a topic that pretty much everyone struggles with...
"How to learn the notes of the neck?!"
Don't worry... I had the same issues as you.
I struggled to memorise where the notes were, and I also got stuck within the first 5 frets and couldn't seem to move out of that area with confidence.
In this lesson I'm going to show you some great exercises to not only help you memorise the notes of the fingerboard - but also get out of those first 5 frets, with confidence!
I'm also going to tell you exactly what my thought process is when playing grooves or soloing... and weirdly, it's NOT notes... sounds strange, right?
Well, I reveal all in this lesson.
In this lesson you're going to learn:
- Why you should start vocalising the note names
- How to get out of the "first 5 frets" trap
- Using memorised patterns to help with note memorisation
- My exact thought process when grooving or soloing on the bass
- And as always, way more...

Coming from teaching public school music in the States for 38 years and being a brass major (classical studies) and learning bass "in my retirement" - THIS lesson was wickedly GREAT!!!! I love your lessons and your advice. Totally relevant and transferable. I've been struggling but this was an eye-opening point-of-view. BRAVO, Scott!! Thirsty for MORE!!

As far as turning ascending chromatic half-steps into notes, something that helped me A LOT is to just think "BE." Because those are the notes, B and E, that don't have sharps. I also have a major scale chant. "Root! Whole! Whole! Half! Whole, Whole, Whole, Half!"

Many years ago, I very carefully labeled my bass neck from top to bottom with vinyl cloth wire labels. I carefully placed each label so that it looked very straight and I did not place the labels directly under the contact points of each string. The only time the strings contacted the labels was when I was bending the strings. This minimized wear and tear on the labels. To increase my accuracy in placing each small square label on the neck, I used the tip of an Exacto knife, rather than my big clumsy finger tips. This allowed me to place the labels with pinpoint accuracy, in such way that looked pretty professional. Several musicians had to closely inspect my neck before they realized that it was a homemade labeling job. The labels are very durable and they stayed on for years without creating a sticky mess. Labels falling off was not an issue. But, they did fade after a while. When a letter began to fade, I would trace over it with a fine tip Sharpie marker, before the letter faded to the point where I would have to completely redraw it by freehand. I got the idea of labeling my neck from a photograph that I once saw in a magazine, of John Entwistle's custom Alembic bass with letter inlays on the neck. Here is the type of label kit that I used. www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/panduit-corp/PCMB-2/298-1270-ND/317767 Here is Entwistle's bass which inspired me to label my bass. goo.gl/images/KRr5ZQ

There are three ways that people learn stuff. Audial, visual, and kinesthetic. Seeing, hearing, feeling. Doing this (and visualising the fretboard at the same time) guarantees you will get it real quick.

This is what is hard for me. I come from keyboard and trumpet where you MUST know (well, I don't know any other way) notes so you can plunk 'em out when you see them written, called out, etc.

Great lesson. I personally found the best way to learn the notes on the neck was to read chord charts or notation. It was painfully slow and tiresome at first, but it was so worth it as I've progressed so much now. No pain, no gain!

Playing an instrument without knowing what the notes are is somewhat nutty but many if not a majority does it. They know some notes so it's a lesson that should be taught once a month. i'm gonna run through it cause it takes sometime for me to identify a random note. On a keyboard this doesn't happen.

Hold the phone, Scott. Are you telling me that I as a bass player need to know the notes above the first five frets? Now, that's a blasphemy! Pardon my horsing around, I do like your Bruce Lee-esque approach, i.e. "I'm not afraid of a man who's practiced ten thousand kicks once; I'm afraid of a man who's practiced one kick ten thousand times." Great lesson, cheers! ;)

Hey Scott. I love that we can hear your breathing at the top of the vid. I find I tend to hold my breath a lot. Probably just out of tension. Do you have an thoughts or advice for anyone who notices this issue when they play? Thank you for any responses from the bass community as well.

Now Im a guitarist who got a really great Ibanez bass. The guy who gave it to me told me playing the bass is easy for a guitarist with decent skills. I think this is true, especially when it comes to stuff like what this video is about. But Im curious what other real bass players think about it so whats your opinion?

I apologize if this has been asked before, but I'm new to the bass. When Scott is playing the C major scale up near the headstock, I noticed that he plays it with all fretted notes. (i.e. playing the second note D as the fifth fret on the A string instead of the open D string. Is there a particular reason for that?

seems to me the easiest and most strait foreward way to learn the notes on the bass is smiply learn to read bass parts you wont be able to aviod learning where the notes are how could you? its trying to learn the names of the notes WITHOUT learning to read thats hard because there is not much point to it to put it another way, if you dont want to learn to read why bother to learn the alphabet? for what?
