How to LEARN VFX & CG in 2019 (Allan McKay)
The most frequent question I get asked from VFX artists starting out is How to learn VFX? Or "how to learn CG & VFX" Where to start learning VFX? In this video I share some tips about 3D and Animation softwares such as 3Ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D, and zBrush. I also talk about how to start learning and retain information.
If you take a moment to subscribe I will be sharing lots of advice on how to level up your career, and get out of it what you put in. this is my procedure for learning 3D for environment and cinamatic look, i set goals, mostly i pick my references from pinterest.com and i try to make the same with some aesthetic look to it by the help of my art director which he lives in japan. your speeches inspire us and helps to rich goals easily i hope someday i work in big companies

Great stuff as always, as to my methods of learning, I am very much a "Do it by trying" type, so I usually follow video examples along, then start, then restart until I get it wright, then try other project, then come back later and try to do the same thing without needing to follow the initial video/guideline specifically.

I don’t know how to draw digitally I personally prefer traditional art but i was always interested in the “godly” 3d shit , u deserve a more views and likes although I’m not going to do cg stuff but u earned a subscriber

Incredibly helpful once again! One of my goals within the next year or two is to reach out to you with my reel. Thanks Alan...well regarding your Qs: i would check every possible resource then there will be one that i would stick to even maybe more than one or two ..no matter , also as a rigger you have situations that cant be alwyas recorded ..in other words : you got yourself there you get yrself out of it , may be asking help over Social media groups or something ...i would do what ever to know what i need no matter . I would also update knowledge and knowing current industry standards ....

Hi Allan, Thanks for the great video once again. I have a question related to choosing the right software and tools. I am Technical Artist/ Generalist working in the automotive industry and in my day to day work I need to solve different problems and use different tools. What is your mindset from Technical Director's point of view, how do you organize your time, how do you know what to learn in your free time, since there are a lot of tools used in this specific role (2D, 3D tool, GLSL shader/Python scripts?

Thanks for everything Allan!! I have some question for you.... 1) Why do you think agency are using FumeFX over some other plugins like Phoenix or Krakatoa? 2) Unfortunately i think TP has really few tutorial in internet (even Cebas YT page seems to be more or less a showroom for stuff instead of a collection of tutorial). Are there some basic to middle tutorials in internet?? 3) Is it faster and easier right now to stick with Destruction or Smoke\Fire to land the first job?? (they are both really interesting but i think it's easier to start with only one........) 4) Is really important to present a reel that is focused also on the compositing if I'm trying to land a job as "the guy that destroy stuff"? Learning compositin > Fixing Destruction\Smoke ?? ... i think i have no more question right now. And again, thanks Allan!!

Hi jardians, the tutorials play fine I think you mean the courses. They are a series of videos and contain scene assets (some are 20+ hours of free training plus all the footage etc) so those you need to register for the free course

Do the best with what you have. I recently set myself a challenge not to buy a new computer but to make the best of my old computers. I have one I use to do the majority of the work, and I send it to render on the second machine.

Start with something simple and understandable with all the context, the goals and how to do it. example, > create an object who will be destroyed "SIMPLE STUFF" (For real use on a movie i mean like a 3d teapot into a real cofea table in mov ) > destroy it > get the final breking scene (parts, ...) > creating pyro, fire, ... > finish the scene inside After Effects adding pyro, fire ... > color / levels > done This will be super helpful Best regards from France.
