Today we tackle glare from glasses in your videos with a few lighting tweaks. Nobody likes to see reflections in glasses!
All lighting videos: • Lighting Videos
Here are a few of the tips mentioned in the video to help remove glare from glasses:
1) Move the light up and over
2) Use a large soft light source
3) If the light needs to be on the side, use some fill to compensate.
Using soft light will also remove/reduce nasty shadows from the frame of glasses.

I don't think I've ever finished watching one of your videos and said, "Wow, that was a complete waste of my time." You ALWAYS have usable, real-world content, presented in a no-b.s. style, and you always get right down to it. I've been doing this for nearly four decades, and I always pick up something from your videos. Please keep up the good work!

There is still no dislikes and 481 likes.. the reason is, he knows what he is talking about, speaks clearly and most of it all, he is not trying to be funny like most other camera and lighting channel guys. Because as a gaffer, I know that most camera people have the driest sense of humor.

Honestly, sometimes it feels like videography is 80% wrestling reflections and bad shadows while lighting people with glaces. This sums up everything you can do about it perfectly. Thanks a lot and keep going :)

You can also use a black silk to diffuse the light. It cuts a lot more light but you don’t get that big white reflection.

I'm so glad to find this video! Last night, my husband needed a headshot for a theatre audition and I'm a new "photographer"...so we had a little fun! I used some tissue paper over a desk lamp to soften the light. I wish I saw this video before shooting, but we still got a great photo that he could submit.

Caleb, I would love to see a demonstration of light placement by doing a pull-back so that the viewer can see how you change the placement. The drawing is helpful but a pullback would be super-cool. Love your video informational videos. You have great presentation - short and to the point.

Great video! Two points of improvement: Try to make sure every sentence or instruction makes sense syntactically. Reading back your sentences to yourself will help you recognize it. At 1:29 you say "One thing you can do is just grab you iPhone and point it at the person and kinda move it around - try to find a good angle." I didn't understand this at first - what am I using the iPhone for exactly? (finding a camera angle?) How exactly is this helping me with the task at hand? I would fix the sentence like this: "A trick to figuring out where to place your light is just turn on your iPhone screen, point it at the person (...)" I know it sounds nitpicky but small changes like this just makes the comprehension smooth and 100% foolproof (: the other thing is that you mentioned in the beginning that distance was a thing to think about, but you never got back to it. Thanks for the quality, helpful video!

Pretty good ideas. I would also add that going one 'stage' further than diffusing the light can sometimes be helpful. Specifically, I am thinking of bouncing off a white ceiling or walls (nothing that is coloured and will give result in a colour cast, of course).

Thank you SO much. Just put my screen-casting studio together and needed exactly what you discussed here. Turns out most of the glare in my glasses was just the computer screen in front of my nose. My studio lights were high as well as left and right... and they were fine. I had a second computer monitor just to my right, so I put the windows background default to black and it was not a problem. I really appreciate the help my friend. thanks - Don

Had a friend who owns a pair of "special glasses" where the edge his glasses is at least 2.5 times as thick as the center part close to his nose. The glasses literally collects light from everywhere and creates a weird distortion at the edge of the glass frame. Since this video wasn't out at that time, I just made him take it off 😂😂😂. Thanks for the great tips! will try it next time: )

Another way to avoid reflection would be to raise the stems by the ears a bit to angle the glass. I use that trick all the time when I can't move the light that much and it really isn't noticeable if the model looks straight into the camera.

I use a 3 light setup where I have 2 lights slightly off center on each side but very high and angled down to light my table and wines. I have a 3rd light that's typically just about eye-level (maybe a little above) but straight on. They're all NEEWER 176 LED lights with their stock diffuser (not the best, but better than nothing). All 3 lights are basically in a row. I sit at a very long table and can't really do lights to the side. I also recently changed out the bulbs in the small chandelier that's about 6-10" above the shot to the same LED temp for some softer lighting. I've been lucky that this setup actually works. Obviously the side lights and the chandelier almost never reflect as I never look directly at them. But even the straight on light that acts kind of like a ring light rarely ever directly shows in my glasses. If I angle my head up just right you'll catch it. What I've noticed is that almost dead on my pupils you'll see a small white light. Even in the age of Skype/Zoom when I sit in front of my dual screen setup (that also acts as a nice softbox if I use some blank work docs) as long as I look mostly straight on to the camera (I've used various cameras) just about eye level you don't see the computer screens. Of course look up high enough and they show up. My last couple pairs of glasses have had the anti-reflective coating and that definitely helped. I think that AR coating is almost as important as having a soft light source and good positioning. If nothing else, it's easier for the camera to see your eyes. Without it, there's still a general reflection that happens. Obviously you can't control someone else's glasses so light placement and softening them is very important.
