Machine binding a quilt is a quicker technique that will add joy to your quilting process. This simple process is great for beginners who are looking for a way to attach binding to a quilt, as well as quilters looking for a way to bind their quilt in half the time. With a few pins and a little bit of patience, you will have a perfectly bound quilt.
BINDING FORMULA FOR MEASURING BINDING STRIPS (0:48)
Measure the perimeter of your quilt and add 15”, then divide by 40” and round up.
For this quilt: Perimeter is 80” + 15” = 95” ÷ 40” = 2.375  3 Binding Strips

I know this is 6 years old but for any other new quilters who see this...for me this tutorial was a game changer! Not having to mess about with doing a diagonal seam on my binding took away all the frustration and just left the enjoyment of binding. I actually really like this part of quilting but the whole fitting together and sewing a diagonal seam was stressful. Maybe it's not a purist's way of doing binding but it's good enough for my purposes and I'm back to loving the binding part. I always hand sew the back because I like to stitch but using the machine on the front with this new (old) method makes it quite quick and easy. Thank you FQS!

I have been machine binding for years, but I've never liked the way the binding looked on the back side. Sometimes the stitches ended up on the binding, but most of the time they didn't and it always looked sloppy. But after discovering this tutorial, I have to say this is the best method I have ever tried. And the back looks absolutely perfect. I wish I had discovered it sooner! Thank you!!

After sewing on the binding from the front, I turn it over to the back and use Elmer's washable school glue to hold it. Dab a bit of glue to the quilt back, fold the binding over it, press into place which dries the glue. No pins required! Sew binding on from the front because if you glued it correctly into place, you will catch the binding in the back. Glue washes out in the first wash! easy peasy! Looks so nice!

Hi Linda, Yes I remove pins about one to two stitches before I sew over them. I personally never sew over pins. If you do sew over the pins on this your stitches where your pin was will be longer and not look as good as your other stitches.

I've watched several videos teaching this method. Yours was very good. But the one thing they all have in common, is not showing the other side. The problem I have is that the stitching on the other side, is sometimes where it should be and sometimes an 1/8 - 1/4 inch away from the binding . Which doesnt look so hot on the front of the quilt. How do I correct this Problem?

I tend to put the binding on the back and bring over to the top so the stitching is good on the front, but then still have this issue on the back. Either way, I don't know what I'm doing wrong
@FatQuarterShopTX
@FatQuarterShopTX 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Pam - You aren't necessarily doing anything wrong, that is a very typical issue for this style of binding. I find that the more i pin and the slower I go, the better results I get. There will still be times when you don't catch the binding on the back. Just make sure you have trimmed your quilt sandwich right up to the edge, nice and straight so when your binding is pulled over, it stays nice and even. To get the best results possible, I prefer to bind by hand.

Hi Michelle! Unfortunately we didn't get the back side of the binding, but we promise we'll get it next time!

It would have been nice if you had shown the back. I would like to see whether or not you hit the binding on the back side.

As long as you've pulled the binding an 1/8th of an inch over the stitch line (the stitch line from sewing the binding to the front side), it should catch the fabric on the back, because on top when stitching, you are stitching either in the ditch or slightly to the left of the stitch line.

At times when sewing from the front, I'll turn my work over, and it does not catch the binding. What can I do?

If you try to fold it under a little more, about 1/8” past the stitch line that might help. Also, use more pins and don’t pull them out until the needle gets right to it. I hope this helps. Just go slowly and try not to rush this process. Thanks for the question!

I was really worried about that too. But today was my first time. And I didnt miss a single stitch! Talk about suprised but like she said I used lots of pins and I also checked from the other side as I was putting them in making sure they extended below the line enough and evenly. I also stitched right up to the pin then hand turned the wheel past it pin so I wouldn't hit it or break needle. Hope this helps.

I don't understand how the green binding is stitched to the front if you are sewing onto the red fabric hence the use of red thread. Please explain? I'm baffled at this point.
