Have you ever thought of using your stitch in the ditch foot for binding your quilts?? (P.S. we know it's not called a zipper foot, it's a blind hem stitch foot!)
We sure hadn't until Christopher Thompson, The Tattooed Quilter came into the Fat Quarter Shop studio to show us how! In this video Christopher walks us through how he binds his quilts and gets the binding to be nice, crisp, and flat.

I was soooo sad when I couldn’t find this video again. I meant to save it. I’m new to quilting and watched a ton of machine binding videos. None of which come close to how perfect yours looks on top. Way more precise method than the wish and a prayer method I use. I never thought to use my stitch in the ditch foot or my blind hem foot. I usually use my walking foot. I agree on the 2.5" binding. I did a mini quilt with 2.25" binding and it was a disaster. :)

As you demonstrate, using and edge binding (or SID) foot allows for a uniform seam. I believe that for machine binding a better practice is to sew on the back, bring it forward to the front, and then use the edge stitch foot (which is an MVP for binding and SID). Bernina has one as a sole plate on its walking foot. If you have an even feed system (any brand), get an edge stitch foot that works with that system. (e.g. I have Juki Smart feed system; but had to by a special foot with the open back to use with it). If you use a top thread that matches your binding, and a bobbin thread that matches the backing, it results in flawless seam on the front, and an imperceptible seam on the back. More importantly, it avoids the 'catch as catch can' for the back edge.

I did see that the binding was puckering. It he had used a walking foot and stitched on the back to attach and topstitched to the front is a better method. I have tried both. I have found when you have a lot of layers, increase your stitch length works also.

I always sew the binding to the back of the quilt and then bring it to the front that way you make sure that it’s all sew down and the opposite for hand binding

Thanks for this tutorial, Chris. Great suggestion to 'audition' the binding around the circumference of the quilt, to ensure no seams in the corners. Wish I had heard this before binding my first (jelly roll race) quilt... which of course ended up having a binding seam *right* in the corner... I just left it, but it was a lot more work than it needed to be to get the binding turned and sewn down. I too like using a lot of pins, thanks for showing how to finish joining the binding. Also, I see that your machine has marked lines so you can sew straight lines without marking them on the fabric, but not all machines are so marked. My suggestion is a piece of painter's tape stuck to the faceplate... works well for me for the same reason newer model machines have the lines marked! :-) ~Diana from Toronto

I was a brand new sewer years ago. Accidentally sewed over a pin. The pin broke and shot right into my right eye! Thank goodness I was wearing hard contact lenses. It cracked the lens but spared my eye. So please think before you ever say it’s ok to sew over your pins!!!

Might have been helpful to have a different backing so it would be easier to tell whether he was sewing on the front or the back of the quilt for the different steps.

Thank you for doing a machine sewing on your binding, everyone does hand stitching, and I have a disease called CIDP hands are numb and I get fingers that spasm or lock. Machine sewing would be great and if I make one I want it to hold up if they are used. I appreciate this.

Thanks! Great ideas on ironing the binding and using the stitch in the ditch foot. I almost always machine sew my quilts since the arthritis in my hands has flared up. Mine never looks as good as this. It is always a little uneven. I will try these two techniques and see if they help. Also love the quilting on your project. Any chance of a new tutorial on it! The video could have been better if some would have been shot from above especially when he was folding the corners. If I didn’t already know what he was doing, I would have been lost. Yes, he’s a great teacher but the camera never showed the folding back at the corners nor the placing together of the ends right sides together but at a diagonal, the at a diagonal was never shown.

When you press the binding after sewing it to the right side, one way to avoid stretching out the binding is to PRESS versus iron.

Thank you for the video. It was so in depth UNTIL the very end and I was waiting to see up close stitching on the back and you didn’t show that. It’s almost cutting off a movie the last ten minutes of watching it 😂. Also Kimberly showed how she sewed the 90 degree angles when she does her hand binding. When you machine bind, what keeps those tiny folds in the corners from unfolding? Does that make sense?

Your quilt looks neat. I’m a new beginner in quilting, I have so....much to learn yet. Started quilting last year about June I guess it was. I ordered me a new Brother’s sewing machine( was waiting for it to come into the sewing store I purchased it from) never thought it would ever get here to the store. Been learning from all the U-tube shows on quilting. You all are inspirational to us new quilters. And the binding you just showed made me feel more confident in keeping on trying.

Very nice! I see you used a 2 1/4” measurement to attach your two binding ends of tie 2 1/2” binding. If one uses 2 1/4” binding, would you then use a 2” measurement to attach the ends? Thanks☺️

Hello Ann! If you are referring to the overlap measurement of the two ends of the binding you would use what ever the width of the binding is minus ¼”. If you have a binding that is 2 ¼” then your overlap would be 2”.

Hello Roxanne! For the quilt top, you are stitching the binding right down on top and folding it over the stitch line to pull it to the back. Christopher's method is that the binding on the back is a little wider than the binding on top, so when you use the blind hem stitch foot to stitch back along the binding on the quilt top, it catches the binding on the back as well. You can see this best at 20:38, when he flips the binding over to show the back stitches.

I'm curious... do you ever adjust stitch length when you get to a corner, etc, to help get it to the precise location you want the needle to be? It's so tricky to have it land exactly at the spot you want to pivot from.

For instance, if you're sewing and the next stitch is going to go a little farther than your pivot point, how do you get it to land where it needs to be? No one ever seems to fully explain that part.

I can’t tell - did he stitch the binding onto the quilt back or the quilt top to get started? I thought he stitched it onto the quilt front and then flipped over to the back, but when he demonstrated using the “zipper” foot he called the other side the back. So I’m confused. Otherwise a great video!

Would you not use matching colour thread in your bobbin for your binding and matching thread for the background for top stitches? That way your stitching wouldnt be such a standout on the back and would almost give your binding a nicer look :)

He did make that a bit confusing for quilters new to this method. I do this all time and what he means is, you don't catch it on the front where you are sewing, but you do need to catch it on the back (which you won't see until you turn the quilt over). So on the front, you want to be right up to but not sewing over the binding (just like stitch in the ditch).

@@Kim_post1927 yes. He's sewing the binding on to the front of the quit by matching the raw edge of the binding and edge of the front of the quilt. Then he folded it over and secured it with the clips. Then he went back over to where he stitched the binding onto the front and stitched in the ditch. It does catch the binding on the back (you see the bobbin thread) but since it's such a straight stitch from going slowly and stitching in the ditch it looks nice.

I didn’t see what the back looked like. And it would have been nice if you had said what number foot you used as a lot of quilters have a Bernina machine.
