One idea I’ve just had is to use two different colours as you have and then knit again another pair in different colours so it’s easier to learn and you end up with two pairs of matching colours in the end! Definitely good for Xmas pressy knits. When you’ve got a few to do in the same size. Or if you want to treat yourself to a couple of pairs.

That was the clearest two sock start up I have seen! I will tackle this again with my next pair. I’ve tried to learn the two at a time cast on before. I can manage to do the cast on, but then getting the actual joining to work in the round, and then keeping track of where I am in the round gets a bit sketchy. I will master this technique! No more lonely one sock WIPs!

Thank you so much for this video. In 10 minutes, you taught me how to master the basic magic loop technique. So far, I have knitted a pair of vanilla socks with variegated yarn. I just started a new pair last night. I absolutely love this technique, as I have suffered from second sock syndrome in the past. Lol! Initially, I used Addi cable needles. They twisted and tangled so much, that I ripped it loose 4 times. When I used my ChiaGoo cable needles, I went from start to finish. I've viewed multiple KZfaq videos on 2AAT magic loop technique, and yours in my opinion, is the best. No using multiple cable needles, no transferring stitches to another needle, and I love that you join in the round by simply "knitting". Great video! Thank you so much for sharing. 😊❤️

I found that to start casting on the last set of stitches it was easier to jam my needle under my keyboard in front of my to keep it from waggling around, then it was easy. Maybe I'll get used to it but I found that the second sock on the needle slides to the back and it's more tricky to keep the first stitch on that round taut to stop laddering. I need to practise more to get used to it. Knitting the first ribbed section was a breeze though, it's just when the socks gets heavier.

Hi. I just wanted to ask. I'm planning to use this method for knitting my sleeves in a top down raglan. Since the front and back are on 2 diff sides, will not there be a small gap/loose story in between the 2 sides which later show up as a poor finish?

Generally, yes. If the socks are mirrors of one another you'll just want to be sure that you're maintaining the opposite pattern on each sock but there's no reason you can't use this method for any traditional top down or cuff up socks. Good luck!

question. i started 2 separate toe up socks on 2 different magic loops (so one at a time). is it possible to transfer both on the same needle and knit 2 at a time after a few rows?
@mfisher4118
@mfisher4118 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! You can either knit them onto the new needle, or just slip them. Make sure you have both of your socks at the same point (i.e.: the working yarn is at the beginning of round). You can decide which one is Sock 1 and Sock 2 but theoretically they're both the same so you don't have too hard a decision. With your new needle, and the working yarn of Sock 1 at the right side (as if you were going to start a new round) you will knit across or slip the sts of the FRONT of sock 1, then knit across or slip the sts of the FRONT of sock 1. At this point you will have both fronts of socks side by side on one needle. Then you can knit or slip the sts of the BACK of sock 2, and finally you can knit across the BACK of sock 1 (making sure that you fold your needle as if you were working magic loop so that you don't end up with the fronts and backs of sock 2 being separated by the folded cable - if that makes sense). Then you would continue to knit in this order: front of sock 1, front of sock 2, back of sock 2, back of sock 1. Best of luck and happy knitting!

had started 2 needle cast on then thought oooh should do both sleeves at once, slid onto cable needle then realized can't do 2 cast on the way you show casting on but I am a stubborn Swede and tried. had working thread at odds. diddled about with straight needle while fighting off cat who was trying to kill yarn, put it down to go to the bathroom and realized it was the exact same.Frogged it back and did long tail cast on, all was ok though really wanted a better finish on cuffs . Finished the first round and realized cast on for XL AND somehow had the cable in a figure 8 and macreme happening to boot. I am giving up and going to bed...3 hrs on the same length of yarn is enough. BTW this is hand spun 3 ply and I have been knitting 50 years so if you are new to knitting and it doesn't work the first or 4th time,sleep on it, have the tea at hand and remind yourself how horrid the last 6 inches of the second sleeve is and have another go. if you don't do various techniques often you lose muscle memory or mash things up. The worst that can happen is you decide to live in sandals and large shawls!!

Cheryl Carlson I was having the same issue with trying to do a color work cowl. The cowl is absolutely stunning. The instructor made it look (if not easy) do-able. Til I tried to do the 2 color I-cord cast on. I started it, messed it up, started over. Rinse, repeat til my eyes were bleeding and I was ready to throw the thing across the room. I realized the following day that my skills are not quite there, but I will re-visit it when I’m not such a klutz with color work.

Do you have a favorite brand of circular needles?
@mfisher4118
@mfisher4118 5 жыл бұрын
Absolutely - I LOVE the Chiaogoo "red" needles that you see in the video. They are a metal needle with a metal cable that is wrapped in a nylon of some sort. They don't kink and the stitches always glide smoothly. I have found that the first time I use the needles (i.e.: right out the original packaging) it's best to wipe the cable off with a damp cloth. Whatever process they use to put the wrapper on the cable has a small amount of residue left behind and its "sticky". Not to the touch, but to the yarn. If you don't wipe the cable off it's ok; it goes away after just a couple of rows but that's been my experience. Best of luck and happy knitting!

For one thing, you can have one set of circular needles with a very long cord, instead of multiple sets with varying length cords. So you don't have to buy several different lengths of circular needles (especially if you buy 1 kit with interchangeable needle sizes that screw onto the ends of the cord).
