Can i seperate it into smaller plants and put it straight into the garden soil without putting them into smaller pots first?

Yes, very definitely. It's a very tough plant. Be advised, if it likes the location, it will quickly grow very large. I have to divide mine about every 2 years or it takes over the other shrubs. It is great for mass planting where you want to cover an area quickly.
