Per usual, this is among the most polished and informative aquarium videos on youtube. I have a 2" sand bed in my 20L office tank that I don't ever touch, but only because I have a bonded pair of tiger pistol shrimp that turn over the sand every few weeks. After running a tank at home with a relatively deep sand bed for over a year, I just got rid of it all and run a bare bottom tank now. Cuts down on the variety of livestock, but way less maintenance.

I had pistol shrimp in my first reef... Didn't mention them this vid but your 100% accurate. Those guys are busy to a fault in most cases.. Debated m adding a pistol shrimp gobie pair.. But if it didn't work I'd have to dismantle my scape to remove it...

love your videos CJ...I have the 30 gallon version of this tank and am following most of the advice you have posted. Easy to get lost in adding too many pieces of equipment in though that can make it truly maintenance free. Your simplistic approach of weekly water changes and good husbandry are the roots of a thriving reef tank (especially a nano). Thanks for all your vids and happy reefing.

Another great video CJ. I use CaribSea Seaflor Aragonite (same size grain as what you have). You mentioned in passing in a previous vid about stirring the sand bed and I started doing it in my 29 at that point - I think it's made a difference. I wasn't getting detectable levels of nitrate and phosphate but was getting some algae so there had to be something in there that was bio-available for it to grow. Sure enough, once I started paying more attention to the sand bed, the algae growth has reduced a lot.

Every little bit helps for sure... Sand beds all eventually get saturated with detritus and waste so cleaning it helps to delay that process... I've seen bar bottom tanks have detritus buildup I can only imagine how it is in our tanks... Glad it helped u out 👍🏾

I started out cleaning the sand but now I have 2 brittle stars and a mix of snails and hermits they do a good job and the sand stays pretty clean. Thats a very informative video, my sandbed is about 2.5 inches deep i've never touched it in the year my tank has been up and running. I have a sand sifting starfish, blue cheek goby some nessarious snails and a couple of cerith snails. I was going to buy more cerith snails but mine have bred in the tank so i have lots of babies coming out at night. I wanted to gravel vac my sand bed but i don't want to lose any snails lol but i do have a nitrate issue, i don't believe my tank is over stocked so my sand bed has to be the culprit. It isn't as white as it should be.

@CJSAQUARIUMS
@CJSAQUARIUMS 8 жыл бұрын
Haven't thought about replacing it but with so little sand replacing it 1/4 of the tank at a time would be easy in my sized tank. Curious how you dealt with silicates and the diatom bloom that would happen from relaxing the sand... Just curious ? 🤔
@mnelson10000
@mnelson10000 8 жыл бұрын
I replace 100% with new, dry aragonite and do a deep clean on the tank since it's torn apart anyway. There is some minor diatom growth, but the coral doesn't seem to care. I restock CUC (mainly hermits) to deal with the bloom.

Great video CJ, well explained. I started my reef tank with gravel as the substrate, and now the gravel is infested with spaghetti worms....if I try to replace the gravel with sand would that be like having to start all over again with re-cycling the tank and going through all of those beginning phases again?
@CJSAQUARIUMS

That gravel houses a ton of your beneficial bacteria so removing it will throw your tank into a cycle... You may be able to limit this by doing one small section at a time.. Ether way it will have an negative impact at first but it will settle out

I have the same and but have 60 lbs. I was told to add a eggcrate to stabilize the Rock and my sand also gets higher towards the back but I use both a turkey blaster but a syphon as well. Sounds good bob. I didn't use any egg crate.. I've seen how strong these tanks are when I had my old Cichlid tank. I used 220lbs of Rock straight on the glass.. I believe the ich got him... As he was eating frozen foods with my other fish for month.. My sandbed didn't have enough life to support it... I doubt if try one again since I have started this routine of handling it myself.. Just watch out because they are suicidal jumpers.. I've had them jump in the rear chamber and straight to the living room floor... The more sand u have avail the bigger the mounds will be. So if u add one u may end up removing some sand due to this... Effective little guys but they do have cons like everything else in this hobby

+NANO REEF AQUARIUM AUSTRALIA I e only recently learned about the value of monitoring ORP... Def something I'm looking into.. Also better test kits overall. I'm getting starting to get past the point of spending money on corals and looking more toward money on better ways to monitor my tanks health... So many levels to this.. Never ending pit of information to learn in this hobby

Every now and then one of your videos pops up in my feed and I am like, oh, that is why he does that. Never understood why you liked to stir your sand so much. I have one large sand sifting sea star that has been in my tank about a year now that keeps the sand turned along with a goby. I guess the sand bed is not that important to the reef aquarium overall, but depending on what type of sand bed the tank has will dictate the way the tank needs to be maintained.

Hey CJ, I'm checking the CaribSea's website and I see that "Fiji Pink" and "Special Grade" are 2 different type of sands according to their granulometry. "Fiji Pink" is one kind of sand only, but your video refer to "Fiji Pink Special Grade". I still don't get it. Thank you for your support.

My 55 gallon has been running for about 5 1/2 months and I've been having issues with diotoms/brown algae! Any suggestions on what I can do to eliminate it? I've heard that diamond goby's work wonders.
@CJSAQUARIUMS
@CJSAQUARIUMS 8 жыл бұрын
Have to attack it multiple ways.. Eliminate its foot source.. Phosphates, nitrates, silicates are the first I would look at... Keeping your sand detritus free also helps. Diamond gobies just keep the sand stirred .. They won't stop algae from growing.. Not sure about your tanks history so hard to suggest any real solutions. Just do your homework and starve it out...

I just bought a jbj 45 gallon and will be setting it up in the next few weeks. I've decided what sand i want to go with but how many lbs should i buy to start out with? I don't want a deep sand bed, more of one similar to yours

I fully agree with you on the sand. Although I don't want it at all, I have a cup of sand in the corner for my leopard wrasse. in my opinion deep sand beds defy logic and science.

That's a good idea... Or even a small container full of sand behind the rock scape to keep it contained. Ether way sand collects crap no matter what so the less The better

Hey so I have the same sand as you and I noticed some stuff growing on it. I added a sand sifting diamond goby. It’s been about 3 days and my water is super cloudy like I can’t even see in the tank. My skimmer has been working to clear out the sand. Will this go away with time or do I need to return the goby. Also side note my RBA closed due to the cloudy water I guess should I be worried my fish and other corals seem ok...

Hello, I've been watching your videos as I've just taken the step into a reef tank. I have read that you should not disturb the sand..will it not release harmful gases trapped in the sand if its stirred up?
@CJSAQUARIUMS
@CJSAQUARIUMS 7 жыл бұрын
Your thinking of deep sand beds... 1-2" inches won't ever have that buildup especially if it's siphoned on a regular basis
@fatheadedfish

Brilliant, thanks for replying so fast! I do have one more question. I have read in a tank of around 30 gallons (which mine is) it is not necessary to dose as regular water changes should have all the necessary minerals etc. I currently have a couple of zoas, one torch, a hammer and an Xenia and do 15-20% once a week. Do you think I will have to start dosing soon as they grow? Or should water changes be ok with even more lps and softies added...
@CJSAQUARIUMS
@CJSAQUARIUMS 7 жыл бұрын
Fat Headed Fish monitoring your alkalinity, calcium and magnesium will tell you that answer if water changes keep those numbers where u want consistently them your fine. Soon as your coral consumption out grows water changes you will need to start supplementing by dosing or calcium reactor.. you prob have awhile before u hit that stage with those corals you mentioned ... happy reefing! 👍🏾

i'm thinking about investing in an automatic feeder but not sure which one to get. do you feed your fish more than once a day?
@CJSAQUARIUMS
@CJSAQUARIUMS 8 жыл бұрын
I've never used an auto feeder... I only feed once a day and sometimes I skip a day if I get too busy... Less food = less waste.. Fish don't grow as fast but that's not important to me

I put the sugar fine sand it blows all over the tank.... I can barely have any flow. This tank setup has been running for 6 weeks... Apparently it should get better after some time. Hopefully that's true.

All sand increases in weight as bacteria grow over it... It's even more noticeable with sugar fine sand.. Not sure how much that will help your situation but it will def be a diff in the sand from the beginning to the point it gets heavier

I used 30 lbs of CaribSea Super Naturals for a 50 gallon tank (40B footprint). I would advise anyone who is new to this hobby to not use this type of sand. I changed part of the tank to CaribSea Aragonite and it didn't help much. Although the Aragonite doesn't stir up as much as the Super Naturals, it still gets blown around the tank with very little flow. I'm hoping with time they will gain weight and I won't have this issue. I might replace more of the sand with Aragonite.

CJ got a question for you in regards to your MiniMax and phosguard: how packed do you have yours? Funny I have brown hair algae on one rock and one rock only but it's getting a little out of hand I was going to start with phosguard first and then go to GFO if that didn't work. I've been feeding brine and frozen food once a day but I guess too much. I also am turning the light to less hours thanks

Just use the recommended amount of media for your sized tank. Based on the instructions listed... It won't come close to filling it up though...

+CJ'S AQUARIUMS hmm I thought you said you had yours filled up. I have the same tank as you. I'm using phosguard and I thought you had filled your innovative marine ( which I also have had it for two years) completely Just I was making sure
@CJSAQUARIUMS
@CJSAQUARIUMS 8 жыл бұрын
+Bob Escher I originally had it filled up but I made a change within the last couple months... I mentioned it in a previous vid about me overdosing phosguard. The recommended amount for our tanks was roughly half of what I was actually using ... Tough part of preventing it from tumbling with it half full... I'm looking into resolving that with extra sponges inside the reactor...
@bobescher8831
@bobescher8831 8 жыл бұрын
+CJ'S AQUARIUMS ok I do have some extra sponges I remove it in the morning what the consequences of using too much And thanks again . You know the instruction say to just put it in a bag. I don't have any at the moment
@CJSAQUARIUMS
@CJSAQUARIUMS 8 жыл бұрын
+Bob Escher not sure of the consequences... I haven't noticed any... My thought are more towards being cost effective. The sponges clog faster when it's completely filled. Forcing you to remove the media to remedy the situation... A lot of times removing the media leads to replacing it before it's fully exhausted... That's my take on it at least..

+CJ'S AQUARIUMS Ya i meant that I agree with you as far as cleaning the sandbed. No matter how many mp pumps on nutrient export mode people have detritus will still sink to the bottom. Of course good circulation will limit the amount of detritus build up but detritus will still build up over time. I'm with you, shallow sand bed and stir it up once a week.
