I've Reached £50 Per Day Dividends | Passive Income

The Compounding Investor

4 ай бұрын

In this video I show my dividend investing journey from an average of 1p per day in 2009 to £50 per day in 2024. I invest in mainly large cap UK companies and reinvest the dividends to allow compound interest to take effect. I have an emergency fund in Premium Bonds which also contributes to my total passive income. My ultimate aim is for my passive income to exceed the wages of my full time day job. I believe that investing in the stock market and building a diverse portfolio of quality companies will beat inflation in the long term and enable me to achieve financial freedom with the option of retiring early if I choose to.

My aim is a 5-6% return. I am almost on track with your journey. At the end of seven years I am making a few pennies under £17 a day in dividends in my stocks and shares ISA.

Always had a very simple minimum target: >long term average inflation rate or >risk free rate, whichever is highest. This is the sort of bare minimum you have to get out of the stock market or some other alternative for it to make sense not just buying a safe bond. Then I compare my total return with dividends reinvested to the FTSE All World benchmark total return. Consistent 7-8% real total return would be nice. :) Some people alter this rule to always ensure they get more than the risk free rate and their dividends grow above the long term average inflation rate, but this is trickier to manage and keep track of. If you're already picking individual stocks as percentage of your total holdings, it's best not to have too much complexity elsewhere and keep things passive. The risk with setting average return targets for a given time period is the active picking of investments solely on the basis of their cash flow timing and yield. Plenty of pies on T212 focus around the calendar dividend theme, but some of their returns are a little wobbly if you dig into the specifics!

@@TheCompoundingInvestor I see. I would never want to sound like it's not an accomplishment because it absolutely is. But factoring in growth of my property portfolio mine is much closer to 20% annually. I actually want it to go down in value as it will be better if I can make further purchases. I also like the feeling of having an investment I can hold and walk around in. I believe demand for property will continue to rise - especially at the low end. If you could realistically achieve double digit yields would you ever look into it? I understand it's a lot more effort though to invest in a home. Stocks don't take any work at all and that's suitable for most investors

@TheCompoundingInvestor 4 ай бұрын
I use Barclays Smart Investor. They are not cheap however and charge £6 a trade as well as management charges. Something like T212 is worth looking at for those first starting out. The dividends remain as cash on the platform and I reinvest them with new money going in as well. I like to choose where the dividend money goes and it also helps to rebalance the portfolio from time to time

@@TheCompoundingInvestor thanks.. I do have etoro and did some copytrading last year but I like this idea. Treating it like a game to get to the next level.. So for example if I'm starting out and make 1p a day and after a month 30p will go in as cash on my account, there would be a £6 fee to reinvest that money? (using barclays).. Just trying to understand it all in my head 😊.. Is it therefore better to invest say £100 or more each month to offset the £6? Thanks again

Thank you for an informative video. I would just like to endorse what you are saying, and reassure any newcomers to investing that this really does work. I've been investing since the early 1990s and was able to retire in 2000. One piece of advice I would give to anyone in the UK is to make use of your annual ISA allowance. All my investments are either in an ISA or SIPP, so are tax sheltered. The beauty of an ISA is that all income you withdraw from the fund does not have to be reported to the taxman, so is free of income tax.

Thanks so much for your comment and for sharing your journey. Yes so beneficial to use as much of the ISA allowance as possible each year as those capital gains and dividends can really mount up over the long term

Hello, Just read the new budget and when I got to the British ISA I knew that would make you smile. As you mostly or at least at the beginning only invested in British individul stocks and you still hold many of them, that this would help. Especially now that from the 6th April the dividend allowance is reduced to £500 and the CGT allowance wil be just £3000, you can just sell some British stocks and immediately rebuy them within the British ISA, which will allow you to move more from the General investment account under the ISA umbrella. As providers needs to prepare on making the British ISA available, this won't happen immediately on the 6th April, but later this year. Anyway, I am sure this is a welcome change for you. What is your opinion?

Exactly as you have described Erika. It’s very welcome indeed. Not sure when it will be available as there is a consultation stage to get through. Hopefully this year sometime. Will definitely use it to shield future capital gains / dividends.

Dividends are not income. They are a return of capital to shareholders. It's money you already own taken out of your left pocket and put in your right pocket. It's certainly passive ... The pocket fiddling is done without you moving your own hands (always a nice feeling) But nothing has been created (or destroyed). You owned the cash the day before the dividend and you own the cash the day after.

Hi, great stuff it really amazes me how well you have done. A reference point this year you need at least £50.00 extra as it is a leap year to maintain your £50 pound a day. I had to work mine out it equals £33. 42 a day, I am a pimp paid off the backs of other people's labour. In truth i find it absolutely amazing, my thoughts are rather than paying a pension for 40 years if i had invested that money what would my end pot be worth? I think it would be fair to say that you are now at the stage of a liveable income from your investment, the hard part is yet to come when do you start using this money as your income as that is what i am finding hard to do, as i enjoy the buzz every friday of finding out what income i have made for that week and toting them all up at the end of the month. In 9 months of my financial year i have received 134 dividend payments, and that is what i find incredible the share amount of payments i have accumulated.

Hmmm… I’ll focus more on dividend investing if/ when my investments are going down or sideways. At the moment I’m getting a decent amount of growth on paper that is way more than I get from dividends. I get about 30% growth year on year (compound) in terms of paper growth - that’s been consistent. I’m getting dividends on a lot of those investments anyway, which is reinvested. Even if I was getting 5-10% dividends I’d be sacrificing a lot of that growth atm. I’d rather focus on growing the pot and thinking about dividends more when I’m older and I want it as an income stream.

Compounding interest is cool if you can afford to invest. I'm currently putting money into crypto (I know its much more risky than stocks) and I'm seeing an average interest of 9.4% and am seeing about £1.60 a week, and I'm adding £200 a month. I started again in January after paying my tax bill with £260 and I've added £650 to date and have seen a nice little rise thanks to the interest brought on by the halving of BitCoins mining reward in a month or so and am hoping I will see more growth in the next few months. Eventually I will start to move to stocks once I see the risk in Crypto become too great for me. This is in no way a push for people to invest in Crypto but I'm OK with the risk that comes with the potential of big rewards.

This is fascinating. Thanks for breaking it down so simply. Great work. I'm just researching investments for the first time. My father in law keeps talking about it, and I now feel a but gutted that I've not known about stocks and shares ISAs earlier 😢 I have a couple of questions though.😊 You say you were saving any extra money that you could manage, but roughly how much do think you think this was a month, especially in the firt few years? Also, your pot seems to grow very nicely, is this also growing simply due to the share prices rising? Along with the compounding of your dividends? It's all a little confusing currently!!😂

All good questions, So the first thing I did was become debt free including the mortgage. I'll leave a link below to a video on how I did this. This gave me more money to use for investing each month. Initially my aim was to invest between £500 and £1000 a month but as the years went by my wages increased so the average since 2009 is around 1.4k of new money going in each month. The pot (total value) grows over time because of the price rising and the dividends being reinvested as well in addition to new money going in each month. The value can swing quite wildly at times and this puts a lot of people off. For example during the pandemic my portfolio fell from 230k to 170k in just a few days. Also in the 1970s the FTSE fell 70% in a single year. The fear of crashes worries many investors but over the course of decades prices tend to rise. Thinking long term is the key to it and of course having a diverse portfolio covering many sectors. How I paid off the mortgage.. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qZOJo7GZu9mrf58.html
