December not great, £35 interest + Sweet FA from Ernie, but there was £30 total in Christmas gifts so if I include that it's still £65 for the month. Total for 2023 was approx £2735 which gives me a month average of about £210. I hope to make £3600 in 2024 as I continue to invest new money throughout the year.

I got 12 dividends this month and more importantly broke my year end target i had set for income well pleased. I still marvel at every friday when i check my account and find some money has been paid into it. For all that work i did not do. Friends look strangely at me, as i am retired and ask what do you do now for a little job NOTHING, as their noses turn up and splutter, well how do you manage?. I don't need to work, as i have people working for me all over the world when one lot knocks off in the west, my passive eastern workforce in the east takes over. ( blank expression they really don't get, it ) The concept of passive income can be described as self help. Day one you have no pot to p**** in day 365 you have several little ones that many would consider not worth bothering with. Year 2 your pots grow bigger or you have new pots all contributing to your central pot. By year 10 you might have to replace the pot with a bucket. The concept is easy while sticking to it is the hard part, as if it was easy everyone and their dog would do it.
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor 5 ай бұрын
You hit the nail on the head there Michael, with the process being easy to do but sticking to it year after year is the tough part and also the ability to be able to leave the shares alone without needing to sell them for any reason. Also we are not really wired to visualise exponential growth or long term existence. I guess this stemmed from caveman times where even looking ahead to the next day was not really worth the bother as we were too busy trying to stay alive that day.

@TheCompoundingInvestor

@@TheCompoundingInvestor that's why I'm updating it monthly at my sheet. Just counting trailing 12-month weighted average dividend yield on cost. It probably won’t happen. It’s the ultimate goal however and I want to see how far I can get towards it. Recent tax changes on dividend allowances means I have to buy lower yields now outside the ISA when I fill the ISA allowance. This has slowed me down significantly in terms of dividend growth each month. Well done on your yearly payout. Maybe you will hit the £1000 mark for next year or be close to it? You can only pay into one of each type of ISA during a single tax year. You can start a stocks and shares ISA whenever you like but can only put a max of 20k in. As long as you don’t take your dividends out of the platform they don’t count as new money and can be reinvested on top of your 20k allowance. However if you take out the dividends you won’t be able to put them in again if you have already maxed out the ISA with new money

Standard and Poor returned 24% in 2023 vs Dividends at and average of 5%-6%. So if you held dividend stocks you missed out on an 18% portfolio increase. Sounds like a bad deal to me. Simple math because you'd need to balance out each stock's gain and loss as well as the dividend but still hard to beat the S&P.

I had no U.K. tech / IT in the U.K. portfolio so this adds a bit of that. The shares are up 10% since I bought them recently. Also 13 years of consecutive dividend growth. I’ve been adding to them cautiously however and not piling in. We will see how this one plays out.

Does this take 0.5% stamp duty on reinvesting your dividends into account? I ask because you would have got 3.76% growth on an accumulating FTSE 100 ETF without having to pay that 0.5% tax at all. An accumulating FTSE All-World ETF, on the other hand, would have given you a 11% return in 2023, roughly £42,000.
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor 5 ай бұрын
@FirstMM Depends which time frame you choose. Over the last 2 years the FTSE All-World ETF has increased only 0.9% while my portfolio has a net gain of £76,128 or an average of 11.7% across those 2 years (subtracting new money going in)

@@TheCompoundingInvestor Agreed, no investing should be looked at in the short term. My belief is that it takes ten years to find out whether a strategy is actually profitable, and yours is clearly doing you proud; I wish you all the best for your future success!

@FirstMM Thanks. I totally agree, the long term result is the key. I certainly would not have beaten a typical index tracker over the long term but I’m buying more index tracking ETFs these days. They were not mainstream when I started. Thanks again for watching and commenting and all the best for 2024.

I get the psychological fix of high dividend payments but I think its cost you a huge amount of money. Your portfolio has been too UK heavy for far too long enjoying only 86% growth compared to the 552% growth of the S&P500 since Janurary 2009. What is your rationale for betting so heavily on UK equities for so long?
@TheCompoundingInvestor
@TheCompoundingInvestor 5 ай бұрын
When I started in 2009 I was restricted to buying only UK individual shares on my Barclays platform. It was only in the last couple of years that they allowed individual overseas shares to be traded. If they had allowed this at the start then things would probably be very different. I therefore grew accustomed to buying UK shares only. Also ETFs were not mainstream when I started. These days things are a bit different and I'm regularly putting in a significant amount into my S&P500 ETF.

Man you'd be earning 13x more if you invested in american stocks, the likes of BDCs and property managers like ares capital. That's like £100k a year just from dividends alone, you'd be able to retire and still earn more than most brits, especially outside london lol. I'm earning about £611 per quarter for my 30k investment so far, and all these calculations are after tax.

Not investment advice of course but if I was personally starting again from scratch I’d make sure I spend less than I earn and pay off all consumer debt. I’d then create an emergency fund to cover 6 months expenses if I lost my job. Then I would invest any surplus money in low cost index tracker funds and hold for the long term
