In this tutorial, I will teach you how to create authentic 16-bit SEGA Genesis music using DefleMask. I was confused on where to begin with Deflemask in the beginning, especially with Genesis/Megadrive music tracking. That changed now by viewing this tutorial and some helpful reading of the manual as well. Though watching this video (Two or three times, gave me a good foundation on FM Synthesis, Deflemask's tracker and creation of instruments) Thank you very much Mr. Matthew Ivic for your deep and broad teachings on how to properly make Genesis music. im struggling to learn but i have made a cover a couple years back, had no idea what i was doing but ive been using soundfonts on FL studio. i want to move on from the SFs and actually learn how to track music. its hard because ive spent my whole life with music scrolling to the right, or reading it from left to write lol. i got this. thank you for the amazing video. your humor and the educational mix is unique and amazing

This is an amazing tutorial; I've been using Deflemask for a few years now but only casually; now that I'm making a game soundtrack I found this really useful getting into the details of the Genesis FM engine as it's not anything like the DX7 that I'm used to in terms of things like SSG-EG. I still watched all of the sections because it was super entertaining :)

I love your comedy along the way. Some of the tracker is very daunting to me because my brain really hates anything mathy so when you were describing irrational rhythm I was like "ow such math" but you made it less stressful because of your jokes. Awesome tutorial!!

And...Do you know if I find the hex section of a MD song on a Hex Editor , I can change something? Me and some new MD hackers are changing game voices/sounds on apps like SoundForge. Thanks, Nelson

Unfortunately, you can't import midi/mp3/wav. Not sure about editing a MD song directly through a Hex Editor. Goes a bit beyond my knowledge. Good luck, though!

@@MatthewIvic thanks, Matthew! Mainly, I've been trying to learn Deflemask to make Sega Genesis, NES and Game Boy styles of music... and it's a bit difficult for me to figure out how to do so. I understand Famitracker pretty well, but I have trouble translating it over to Deflemask. That's my big issue (outside of generally just learning FM synthesis to make 16-bit music.)

If you're used to FamiTracker, I'm guessing the DefleMask interface isn't troubling you too much? I'd look into writing short pieces (maybe only a couple frames long), and deconstructing premade FM instruments (figure out what makes instruments you like sound the way they do). See if that helps a bit.

help, I want to make music and I want the DAC to play (sonic2snare) but when I play the DAC it doesn't play

Try programming the DAC Enable effect "17" with value "01" in FM channel 6. The samples are mapped chromatically; this means if the snare is the first sample you loaded, you should be able to program it into FM channel 6 with the Z key on your computer keyboard (the input note of C). Hope that helps!

finally found a video on how to get the samples to work! tho im still super confused on how to get good sounds from the algorythms, not to mention i cant seem to find a way to get the full set of notes either as it starts at C and nothing lower. regardless excellent straightfoward tutorial, im hoping the cheat sheet would help me have a better understanding of the functions for someone who has no musical knowledge.

You are right! I should have included more information on STDs: They're quite communicable after all. :-p Jokes aside...I thought FM synthesis was more interesting, and I felt I had already crammed enough stuff into this video. Basically, you draw an envelope, you set an arpeggio if you want, and you win. That's about it...I guess there's the noise channel, too, if you want to mess around with that. DONE! XD

Good day, I have a question about the ssg-eg, so with the ssg-eg I must mute sustain or else it will not work/ cannot be heard?

The short answer is yes. :) The ssg-eg uses different patterns that retrigger your ADSR envelope. If there is a sustain level set for your envelope, when a note is held, it hasn't completed a full ADSR cycle. The held note will play at the sustain level. You won't hear the different ssg-eg patterns. Hope that helps.

Transcribe the original song first. Once you have the notes figured out it's more a question of arranging. :)

Thank you for the tutorial! I downloaded the software only to realize that its a bit too advanced for me to use. One thing I can't understand is how do you uninstall it? It doesn't show up on the add/remove programs list on windows 10. I could not find any information about this in the manual or on the web. Any suggestions? Thank you for any help...

Note: Your cheat sheet has a fault on the 4th page where it says "parameter decimal hexadecimal" its the other way around, maybe slow down a bit is actually faster for the learning process.

really good tutorial, but for some reason i can't get the percussion to sound the same as it does in the video. i've copied the instruments exactly, yet somehow it sounds very metallic. am i missing something important?

If it's too metallic, the MULT or volume of a modulating operator might be too high. Either that, or the operator configuration might be off. Hard to tell without seeing.

I wonder what I'm doing wrong. With percussion for example, I copied everything to try to get it to sound like you do. It doesn't sound the same. It sounds too distorted, creating an unnatural sound. Especially the open hi-hat is awful. I copied the ALG, ADSR, TL, MULT, octave, etc but it just sounds bad. I did the same for the brassy synth and it didn't have the same feeling unfortunately.

Hard to say without seeing the instrument... However, FM instruments can be pretty nuanced, so try playing around with one parameter at a time until you get something you like. You can also find instrument packs online ripped from actual games to learn from as well. Hope that helps at least.

Liking the tutorial so far. It really helps. I tried to download the cheat sheet in the links but for some reason when I try to add it to my cart so I can get it I kept getting the following error: " Paypal error (10525): An error (10525) occurred while processing your PayPal payment. Please contact the store owner for assistance." I made sure to turn off my adblock and javascript blocker but still kept running into the same error.

I receive that error when I click the PayPal button... Try clicking "Add to Cart" then "View Cart" (upper right corner), proceed to checkout, and finally "Place Order." That should take you to the download screen. If it still doesn't work, let me know.

very good tutorial BTW I have recently wanted to make a ym2612 remix of something, anything really but I always fail at 2 things 1. Finding an instrument you don't know the name of 2. Making it not sound terrible Any advice as to what to do? =(

Thanks, CD. I would look at demo pieces that use the YM2612 and see what instruments appeal to you. After you find one you like, save a copy and start messing with it. In general, more modulator operators = more harmonic interest (i.e. crunchy, distorted, altered). When building your own instruments, I'd start with a single operator and mute everything else. Build a base sound you like and add in other operators slowly/mess with alternate configurations. Have fun with it and hope that helps! :D

I know it's not your problem but it would be nicer if you speak a little bit slower. It's hard for non native english speakers to follow that speaking speed.

@@MatthewIvic don't worry, it's just that this was much more overwhelming than i'd expect, especially the lack of prebuilt instruments. Be neat if DefleMask came with FMLib instruments for MegaDrive at least. But that's a me thing

Thanks for the comment, Mike. Hmm...all the signal processing I do removes and limits parts of the audio spectrum: noise gate, EQ (de-essing and other nasty frequencies), and a bit of compression. Only thing I might have tweaked is mic positioning and acoustic location, but I work with what I've got. :P What settings do you suggest?

@@MatthewIvic Yea I have a few suggestions, turn down the bass and turn up the mids, use less vocal fry, project voice with more energy. Those 3 things will make a huge difference.

I'll look into these. Vocal fry definitely messes with the lower end. Will be useful for my Death Metal Chiptune tutorial at least...
