To celebrate my 200th video, I've put together this build-along on making a 100 pound crossbow and bolts. The build was quite long and took 3 days to film, but here it is! There are 13 parts, so sit back with some popcorn relax.
The crossbow has a 100 pound prod, a PVC stirrup, a captive bolt rest and a simple lever trigger. For extra stability, the bolt nocks directly on the string to eliminate the need for a retention clip and to reduce side-to-side bolt movement.
Thanks for watching and enjoy!
Here's a better description of some things you will need as well as links to videos and some items on Amazon.
The heating trough is made of a non-conductive base like cardboard or wood shaped like a gutter or round tube, covered in a reflective material like aluminum foil or flashing.

I used the step through method. It was not easy and I ended up going off camera by accident so I didn't include it in the video. I have never gotten so exhausted stringing a bow before or since.

Ok, I am in the process of making this and for the life of me I could not get the string on!! I followed all steps exactly! It required so much force that the prod just kinked! Maybe you can post a quick vid on how you were able to get that dang string on pleeeeeeese!

When trying to string the prod, keep in mind that the brace height is very low, only about 3-4 inches. If you try for a brace higher than 4 inches, the prod will likely collapse on itself. When I strung the prod I did not heat it up to make stringing easier. I used the step through method, though it was difficult and I ended up off the view of the camera so it didn't show up. The trick to stringing this prod is to make sure the flex is even at all times. If one limb bends more it will collapse.

It's round at the center for a reason, if you make it even not round a bit, it will bend, might want to check the lengths and string length. Not that I haven't made this, but the calculations are usually wide enough to allow. I made the PVC youth bow, strung it 3 inches shorter thinking the bow would be less powerful due to the PVC bending, it ended up 42 pounds instead of 35. The measurements are general but they get the job done.

Nick, you mentioned early on that the depth of the cutouts was 1.5 inches but the one top cut looks shallower than 1.5 inches and if cut that deep, it would leave a thin neck susceptible to easy breaking. Your stock appears to have about 2 inches of wood between the last rear cutout and that top cut, so can you clear that up?

Hey I love what you're doing with alternative bow materials!. I've been a self bowyer for sometime and I always been afraid to try making a wooden crossbow prod at legal hunting weight. (100 lbs.) I was wondering what diameter polypropylene rope you used for your string as I'm attempting a build myself right now. Thanks! keep up the good work!

Hello Nick, I made Two full size crossbows just like your or near as I could get it both of them clapsed on the bow right next two the front of the tiller,when I pulled the string back to 16" to the dowells and locked them. So I could load and arrow. how did u get your bow to hold up? on the cross bow. Not saying it can;t be done but boyh of mine bent right beside the cut out notch on the front of stock. I made a 100 pound long bow using 1/2 ,3/4/ 1" and it is still round. .

I am also having the problem with the PVC collapsing when I try to string it. I have made 3 different pieces, they all look good when finished, but when strung, there is one spot where the bow will crease and bend. I reheat the PVC and reform it again, and when I try to string it, it will collapse in a different spot. I have done this about 4 times with each of the 3 pieces.

Hello Nike Nick ,TB I have a ? about the PVC Cross Bow How did u get the Puple rope to fit the arrow nocks what size rope was u using. I am useing hay bail twine.for my bow string but its a little large in diamiture',when I put my serving on. But I run in to some promblems with the with of my stock it was made from crate oak. 21/4 "' W 3/8 dowels would not fit the draw. I used leg screws, just grround them of smooth. I use plastic 3/8 sleeves

Over the leg screws. the draw string sets on the plactic sleeves. My triger fit good between th screws. it don;t look as good as yours. I used a poer band on the triger it bounces right back up after firing. I had to tacke my bow back apart because I got my brushes to tight when I glued them. I tried to heat the arrow lock swith the heat gun, and I burnt my tie ropes into from my bow so now I am retieing the bow and sturp back on. Ha! pratice makes learner's

Hey bro I was going to see if you thought 1" PVC would work OK. and if so how long would you make it and what kind of fletching. I am wanting to start this project. I will go ahead and start on the stock until I hear from you. Thanks for any help. Oh and what do you think about the string inside parachord. If I was to use it and make real bow string?
@BackyardBowyer
@BackyardBowyer 9 жыл бұрын
Barry Koch 1" pipe would give you a lower draw weight, probably closer to 50 pounds or so. Honestly, any type of 3 or 2 vane fletching would work with this crossbow. The inside of strands of paracord would probably be very stretchy. It would work, but you will probably have to make the string much shorter than you expect.
@shovelheadman1
@shovelheadman1 9 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the quick response one more question I know you don't like doubling up on pipe in side of pipe. what if I ripped a 3/4 pipe down the center and make it same length as the 1". If I turned the uncut side in. Have you ever exp. With that idea? I was thinking of trying it. I will get the rite size I just thought about trying it for fun. But I don't have a true way of checking the weight. Thanks again and I will quit bothering you.

Nick, will increasing the length of the prod increase the length? I would like to have about a 20 inch draw length and still have the 100 lb draw weight.
@BackyardBowyer
@BackyardBowyer 9 жыл бұрын
Ronald McCaig Yes, you should be able to increase inch for inch, so add one inch of pipe for every inch of draw longer you want to go. This may not work perfectly, but it's a good place to start. You can always shorten the prod a little to bring weight up later.
@JerryJr65
@JerryJr65 9 жыл бұрын
Ronald McCaig, i think that was one of the mechanical limitations you find on the old crossbows of the middle ages. In the metallurgy of the time, they were just learning how to make a spring steel, but they couldn't make that design of a spring too long or pull it back too far, Something that started to happen in those old crossbows was that they kept making thicker & thicker prods, that needed to be pulled back with increasingly sophisticated mechanical assistance. The old steal prod crossbows were relying on a draw of only about 5-8 inches, and 8 inches might even be stretching it!. They relied on extremely robust prods as a compensation for their short length & really more so, their lack of draw length. But anyway, my side note is not exactly an answer to your question, it is just something that i thought was useful trivia that might touch back on why you asked about it in the first place.

Hey every little bit of information helps as I am new to view building of any type and thought that pvc views would be a good, cheap alternative to start. Thanks JerryJr65
@JerryJr65
@JerryJr65 9 жыл бұрын
Ronald McCaig, there is an important formula to the actual performance you get from a bow spring that involves its length, its poundage and its "springiness". Old crossbows relied on poundage, old English war bows relied on length. Asian composite bows that had to be both short & powerful to be used from horse back had to be very well crafted to be as springy as possible, and i think that factor is what bow makers to this day are challenged by... how to get the tips of the spring to unwind as fast as possible within the safe confines of the materials used in construction.
