This crossbow is pretty powerful, shooting a 400gr. bolt around 150-160 fps.
To celebrate my 200th video, I've put together this build-along on making a 100 pound crossbow and bolts. The build was quite long and took 3 days to film, but here it is! There are 13 parts, so sit back with some popcorn relax.
The crossbow has a 100 pound prod, a PVC stirrup, a captive bolt rest and a simple lever trigger. For extra stability, the bolt nocks directly on the string to eliminate the need for a retention clip and to reduce side-to-side bolt movement.
Thanks for watching and enjoy!

This is one of the best How To series on KZfaq. Not only did you show everyone in clear concise steps how to build a good cheap crossbow, but you did it without recording endless minutes of mindless blabbing to hear yourself talk, like most other amateur videos found here. Well done young fellow!

You are amazing. I have totally enjoyed watching your video's on making the 100lbs crossbow. I was disabled back in Sep. 2011 and when I fell at work, I broke my neck and lower back. My boss fired me trying to get out of workers comp. Needless to say my wife and I have lost everything. My main enjoyment in life is hunting. But with money almost none existent, in our life at the moment it is really hard to afford to be able to hunt. I have found ways to get me out into the woods, and now I have found a way to build my crossbow and bolts. You are a great teacher and a Brilliant man. Thank you for posting your video's. You have really inspired me to get back out there and hunt.

I really like your stock design and the trigger is much smoother than i thought it would be. Consistent chrono speeds, very impressive improvised weapon for what could be scrounged from a construction site or purchased for less than $10 bucks.

I have been looking for a crossbow that I can make myself and that will have power enough to reach a target beyond the end of the crossbow. Your videos are fantastic. Even when I got lost, if I was patient you answered my question and showed me how things fit together. I subscribed and look forward to seeing more informative videos. Thank You Again.

Backyardbowyer, I have watched the 10 steps of making the crossbow and was impressed that so many things you used are "common" tools and materials. Did you invent this bow or get the information from someplace else and just showing us your method. You did an excellent job of showing us every step and making sure we saw what you were doing. Thanks for making it simple but I know it would not be as simple as it looks. I would like to be able to communicate with you through e-mail to get some additional tips and techniques.

I just want to say that you did an excellent job on your you tube video. Both in being precise and in the quality of the video. I agree with one poster that you would make a great teacher!! :-). And I also totally disagree with the Nay Sayers that this is not at least close to 100 pound draw weight. I have been a competition archer as well as an avid deer bow hunter for the past 40 years and i know what a 30 lb vs a 100 lb bow sounds like when the shaft hits the target. Keep up the good work and s-c-r-e-w the negative comments. KUDOS 4 A GREAT JOB!!

Hey Nick, have you ever tried making a bow with PEX pipe? I found out by googling it that it has been around for a long time but I only became aware of it yesterday when I saw it at a building center. It comes in lengths like PVC but I think the maximum diameter is 1 inch. The thing that is kinda cool is that it comes in red, white and blue colors. It may be completely unsuitable for bows but I was curious. Of course, this would be for non-nocked arrows that the string just pushes, which is typical of most crossbows.

Hey nick if you could make a video that is more in depth on how you string the bow it would be extremely helpful. I am trying to make one of my own but every time I try to string it the bow buckles. I love your videos by the way.

It only requires special bolts if the crossbow is exceeding 100lbs. One main reason they have bolts and arrows because a lot of crossbows are 150 lbs of force and the sheer force can split a standard arrow down the nock when being shot. So for the standard homemade crossbow a standard arrow should work just fine

Great series. How is the aim? Looks like you're grouping them pretty well from that distance. Curious how it compares to your "spot." Looks like a tough pull as it is. If you stepped up the lbs (for bigger game hunting), I'd wager you have to figure a way to assist in the pull. Perfect for target, plenty of power for rabbits. Nice work.

One option that might work well is to use 2 pieces of pvc, one will be larger than the other. The smaller one should fit snugly inside of the bigger one and cement glue them together, if that makes any sense. It should result in a good bit more power.

a good long bow is capable of speeds in excess of 230 fps. A crossbow is not limited in any way by limb size as normal bows are since the limbs are horizontal and not vertical. If the creator of this bow makes his limbs longer will he be able to pull another 20 fps out of it? Maybe. The fact that this is a home built cross bow and uses PVC for the limb material means very little and with some refinement im sure he can reach 200fps. Good strings and lighter bolts can make a huge difference.

OK, I've seen the 2-blade broadhead you show being made in your "Hunger Games District 12 Arrow Part 2" video but I am looking for some way to incorporate a field tip with utility razors. If successful, it should be both sharper and more durable than a mild piece of tin. The other thing here is I am using cheap, ($2.99 from Wally World) ready to shoot carbon or glass arrows then experimenting with adding razors. These hollow shafts would not work well with a "hafted" arrow head. If I had access to a small lathe I could probably rig up something but I work with what tools I have. I may perhaps experiment with forging some heads then heat treating them.
@wildrangeringreen
@wildrangeringreen 7 жыл бұрын
like a mechanical broad head? take a look at some production models and you could certainly make one with box cutter blades and a field point, or at least I would think
@willyam9735
@willyam9735 7 жыл бұрын
+wildrangeringreen, The problem with duplication of commercial broadheads is the very thin slot that the tri-blades fit into. Most (if not all) makers of homemade broadheads do not have access to the tooling necessary to cut the very thin slots that hold the razors in place. My idea is to silver soldier the blades onto a right sized tube that then would slip over the end of arrow shaft. This tube would be capped on the end to butt up against end of arrow shaft. It would have a hole in cap just big enough to allow screwing original field tip back on the arrow. Once the field tip is tightened down it would solidly hold the tube assembly in place. Thus the razors would be behind the field point but just as deadly as the commercial broadhead! I will never make such a homemade broadhead though because I can buy a dozen 3-blade broadheads for $5.47 shipped using my Amazon Prime account. That's less than 46 cents a broadhead so I bought four dozen of them! For that price I cannot waste my time trying to make homemade ones! www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00O0LU7SA/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

How well does the PVC hold up? Does it start to loose power over time? You might want to put some fiberglass resin over the strings that hold the parts together to prevent them from loosening. I haven't watched all the videos yet but thanks for putting them together. Looks like a fun project. P.S. is that one of those thermometer spy cams I see on the wall in Part 11?

I have a question Nick. How many shots do you find the prod is good for? I estimate I've taken 50 shots with the one I made and it is now quite bent from use. I take it down when finished, and each time I noticed a slight bit more bend that I did not put into the build. Is there a life to these bows we make with PVC? Can you reshape them after the original build is bent out of shape? Thanks. PS love the way you describe things for us. Thank you for all your videos.

You understand draw weight is not only factor in arrow speed of course a compound bow at 70lbs is going to deliver arrows that fast that doesnt mean a 70lb longbow or maybe even a 100 will deliver them as fast as your 70lbs compound bow. Compound bow design is very advanced thats why its able to shoot the arrows out faster.

What do you mean? Compound bows are sending arrows down range at 360 fps IBO. I have 9 bows. I hunt and shoot competition. I am in no way insulting this guy, its a neat creation. I am going to build one as well for fun. All I mean is that my 70# draw Hypertec will sink its arrows which are 30" to the fletches at that range so I thought at 100# it would drive bolts a lil faster is all. Maybe if he shoots some carbon arrows he will get a big speed increase.
@NeoIsrafil
@NeoIsrafil 11 жыл бұрын
Speeding up the limbs would be difficult...maybe make it with thinner diameter pvc, but double layer it? I know that in bows the wider limbs are the slower the bow tends to shoot. Perhaps reduce friction, or add something with a little more spring to it like a fiberglass core.
