Ⓕ How To Make A 5 Minute Trivet (ep33)

Күн бұрын

I made a fun and easy wooden trivet that took about 5 minutes to make. Maple would have worked better to not chip out as much, but this was somewhat of a test, and I didn't have any maple at the time.

Nick Ferry Lots of possibilities here... cut in half and make two triangular shaped trivets... cut it to the shape of an octagon... put it in a circle jig and make a round one.... How much not to let your wife know? As I said...lots of possibilities here.... hehehe ;)

KSFWG I was thinking the exact same thing. I figured cutting them at diagonals would look cool, or a circle jig would be fun to cut them out with too

Hey Nick, great minds think alike... I made something like this several years ago (no video or web page). It is a quick and fun/easy project. Over time a few of mine warped a bit, I think since so much of the wood is removed from the board. Oh yeah, and don't make the individual "fingers" of the trivet too slender or they can easily snap off.

Interesting idea. So if you built it again, would you build in one piece or individual pieces?
@NickFerry
@NickFerry 9 жыл бұрын
Gary Truesdale I guess that would depend on whether I was trying to save time or material. By cutting it up into smaller pieces you could almost get 2 trivets to every one trivet with this method. My wife has asked me to make a couple more of these and I will most likely employ this method again. I would however use a less fibrous wood like maple (less tearout).

@MarkChapnell
@MarkChapnell 9 жыл бұрын
I've seen this style of trivet before and it always reminds me how annoying it is that British table saws don't take dado blades. It makes no sense there are no laws against it, just a few minorextra safety features they have to add and they are allowed to increase the arbor size.
@BrainFizz
@BrainFizz 9 жыл бұрын
Mark Chapnell I'm pretty sure there are NO Laws against it.....I was told the big makita takes a stack. But night certain. They're definitely uncommon.
@MarkChapnell
@MarkChapnell 9 жыл бұрын
The good thing is there are enough USAF bases in my area that you can pick up a used american saw that will take one. eBay, craigslist, bookoo and Gumtree are always full of them. I was reading an article somewhere once that said the saw just needs to be guarded and the blade has to come to a full stop within 5 seconds or something like that. Both easily achievable if not already standard features.
@BrainFizz
@BrainFizz 9 жыл бұрын
Better get one soon before Lakenheath and Mildenhall close completely ;-)
@MarkChapnell
@MarkChapnell 9 жыл бұрын
True, but I would guess when they do there will be a lot more saws going spare because people don't want to ship them home. It'll be a clearance sale, everything must go.

Y'know.... It strikes me that there's another use for this 'intersecting dado' 'waffle fry' cutting technique. Ever use a laptop computer somewhere other than a desk, and hear that increased fan noise when it overheats because you sat it on a blanket, your leg, etc., and blocked the airflow? Or it's too hot to comfortably set on your leg? Why not a 'trivet laptop board'? Say only 5 or 6 dados per side, 5/8" wide and 5/8" apart (leaving the rest of the panel solid), with the dado location running under the computer's bottom fan grill. Maybe have one or both sides' dados off-center. Round the corners and sand the panel smooth before cutting the dados, and afterward ease all the edges, give it a good coat of clear gloss poly, and add some of those clear rubber self-adhesive flat buttons to keep the computer from sliding off of it. The resulting airflow is good for your computer and not shortening its life due to overheating, as well as for your leg to prevent sweating under an uncomfortably-hot device.

@NickFerry

Steve Collins The Delta and DeWalt seem identical @1vUM6iq - I would definitely buy it again, it is a very nice set. My set however has to be cleaned because my last saws misalignment caused burned wood to gum up this set a bit. So I had a little burning. When it's clean, it cuts like butter!
