I love this! Thank you for sharing! I am curious though as to why you wouldn't solder the smaller jump loop first to avoid the fiddli-ness?

I was cutting all the wire into pieces and trying to solder it all at once and they always came out lopsided and were very difficult to hold things together while soldering

Hi Mal, I don't have a cathedral or tiffany style tutorial at the moment and may not be able to do one for a while due to trying to organise the studios being able to reopen but I was sure I'd seen a great picture diagram tutorial over on the Ganoksin website. I've just has a quick look and can't see it but it might be worth you googling Ganoksin stone setting and see what comes up. Otherwise, I'm sure if you ask on one of the jewellery facebook groups, people will signpost you to some tutorials.

I saw a video recently of a jeweler making a basket setting with sheet instead of rings. I'm trying to make a setting for a cushion cut stone and would like to go this route. It looks like this would translate over well enough. Do you have a recommendation on what gauge sheet I should use? It looked like he used a burr and tapered the sheet as well.

Excellent again, sadly I went to solder the ring to the setting which decided to collapse, but I will get there. Thanks Kim

I do all my work for rings, meaning that all my baskets are for 6mm and under stones. If I can do it, so can you. I taught myself

Glad you found it useful Camy :) I can't remember off the top of my head as it was a year ago but the basket wire would have been either 0.8 or 1mm and I think the ring was 1.5mm square wire.

A question: Why did you solder the larger jump ring into the 'cage' first? I would have started with the smaller jump ring and then put the larger one on top as this would have made both easier to position. What have I missed?
@Caroline-wn7kt

Very pretty, love the stone. But, why did you not solder the small ring first instead of trying to work around the larger one?

I am curious, why didn’t you solder the smaller bezel into the basket first?
@makeitwithkim-jewellerysil3126
@makeitwithkim-jewellerysil3126 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, it was because the larger bezel is the crucial one in terms of supporting the stone and having the prongs at the right angle. The bottom one, just adds extra support afterwards and if it's sitting too high or low and therefore making the basket too tall or short for your liking, it's easy to remake the smaller bezel so it sits at the height you prefer.
