This isn't an even output. The output from one belt will be divided to 3-3-1-1 (37.5%-37.5%-12.5%-12.5%). Adding a spliter before or after the tunnel will make the output 25% each. Edit. Read the other comments and I'm just beating a dead horse

If you are making a tutorial on something, you might as well check that you are correct. Belt balancers are only balancing equally when every belt has a splitter connecting it with every other belt (there are more conditions, but this one is required). There is another comment going into the math of this, but i think i can explain why this design is wrong more simply. Consider why are there underground belts. You can move the top half of the balancer below the bottom one, and it will not need any underground belts. Like this: =||===||= =||=||=||= =||=||=||= =||===||= Thus if the proper design uses underground belts (and it indeed does), there is a reason. This reason being that you need a splitter on both: the inner pair of belts, and outer pair of belts. =||====\....../==||= =||=||=] \=||=/ [=||= =||=||=] /=||=\ [=||= =||====/......\==||=

Well I was going to say i was hoping for something that explained the concept and allowed for making an any to any balancer but instead I got a tutorial on how not to make the simplest balancer...

If you want a quick run-down, learn how to make the real 4x balancer. Delete one of the starting belts and take an output belt and loop it back to the start's missing input. Now you have a 3x balancer. A 6x is 2 3x's combined. A 5x is a 6x with the final output looping back. 8x = 2 4x's and 7x has one output loop back to the beginning. Repeat this logic for whatever you want. Eg 9 = (3+3+3) These will produce huge systems, but maybe when you combine them together you'll notice you can make it smaller by re-arranging it slightly. This is how people optimise them to make them smaller.

You need a Splitter either leading into the undergrounds, or after the undergrounds come up. Reason: Number the belts 1-4, top to bottom. Assume all the material is coming in on the top belt Result is 50% is going to the top belt after the first splitters, and 50% going into the first underground. Nothing is going into the second underground, nor is anything going into the bottom belt. The top 50% goes to the middle Splitter, and each belt leading away is 25% So before the last Splitters, the belts are: 25% 50% 0% 25% After the last Splitters the belts are: 37.5% 37.5% 12.5% 12.5% You can test this by using a single chest with a Stack inserter set to a size of 4, 8, or 12, and have that inserter output to the top belt. Let it run for 1200 items (i.e. iron plates), then count how many items are in the 4 final chests.

2 major mistake. You're missing a splitter to balance the inner belts. You're using an arm to take directly from splitters at the end, meaning they can take from both sides of the splitter. You need one more belt after the splitters to make sure arms don't take on the wrong side of the splitter.

If you're gonna do it like this why not just smoosh the five splitters together and be done with it? Why use the undergrounds? They don't do anything. The belts aren't balanced anyway, and at least with the five splitters together there's a path from every belt to every belt, even if it won't draw evenly.

Just put a single splitter in centre before the underground. You can eliminate 2 splitters at last by this. Helpful in making larger splitters.

You are right, but I never use throughput from a individual belt, but create branches using splitters on all lines. So it was never a problem for me and never noticed it. Thanks for the link.

The center splitter lines are done and don't need another splitter. The 2 underground belts should use the same splitter. 1-[a]-12 ----\ /-----------1234 2-[a]-12 --> \--[c]--/ /--[c]--\

as a headsup, this balancer is incorrect, it doesnt properly balance the middle lanes, it also uses 1 too many splitters, only 4 are needed. 1 for A and B = AB 1 for C and D = CD 2 for AB and CD (inner and outer) this makes every belt ABCD

As everyone else points out, this design isn't accurately splitting the outputs. To fix this design, move the first 2 splitters 1 tile back, then place a splitter connecting the 2 other splitters to one another and to the undergrounds, with a belt on top and below. The last 2 splitters are not needed.

As other people already noticed, you need one more splitter to balance the middle lanes so 3 in the beginning or end looking like a triangle. I usually dislike balancers because they imply that you want four equal outputs or equally taken inputs which prevent backlogging which is way too easy to prevent with just 2 rows of splitters. Using balancers for non-full belts is just cruel to UPS, I'd be prioritizing the belts to have a full one instead. However that realization was after I spent a bunch of time reviewing, proof checking and making a whole book with many designs for balancers, some copying from other books and others that didn't exist. Got literally every design from 1 to 8 belts (even the useless ones like any going to 1) but it's on my old drive which got deleted. Iirc there was also for more than 8.

When you take a splitter off of your bus it can get light on resources, a balancer helps spread out the resources so your machines aren't starved.

As far as I can tell if only the first two belts are filled, the output of the first two belt will have far more materials than the lower two, same for vice versa. An actual balancer means no matter which belt was fed it should evenly distribute to all 4 outputs. Adding a balancer before or after the tunnel would achieve that.

Also, what is the need for this, why not just drag each of those lines to whatever you need? I know it makes sure each belt has the same amount of materials, but i feel like at least for me each of my iron lines has 10 miners, going into 20 smelters (fake numbers i don't actually know) so aren't those belts inherently going to be equal anyways?

Later in the game as you take items off a belt you will need to re balance it with other belts carrying the same items. because you will need to use more than one belts worth of items very fast.

but can you make perfect ratio splitters, no matter the ratio? like split a belt evenly with say 7 on the left and 13 on the right?

Use an 8-16 splitter, and make sure to take from at least one lane of every Splitter at the end (so 5 Splitters will have two outputs and 3 Splitters will have one output). Powers of 2 are much better to do Splitters with. Then again if you are needing to balance 7 and 13, at that point I'd recommend using trains of either 1-4 or 2-8 in size. You just have more stops to handle the extra inputs and outputs. For example, 7 lanes of Iron Ore from a decent-sized patch output to one 4-4 Balancer and one 3-4 Balancer. Those two 4-lane outputs are then sent to stations designed to fill 1-4 trains. Similarly, for the input you have four stations each taking 1-4 trains filled with material.

whats the point of using belts then you can have straight conveyers you need to show real example and results that applies to base factory probably would require more effort and ditch the shorts

the balancer is not even right, and the use of balancers is when parts of your factory consume on and off, you then need to reroute the excess to other belts, although a perfectly ratioed factory won't have this problem, everyone forks materials from the main bus to feed a hub/mall for construction goodies
