Surprise bog kit is to hope for hitchhikers! (Buy potted stuff) I got my favorite Sarracenia so far as a hitchhiker seedling on one of their deals. My favorite part of the CC store is hitchhikers are very common, and sometimes you can get a rare hitchhiker that you would of otherwise overlooked. I also think it would be cool if they sold a hitchhiker seed mix of whatever is prolific at the time.

@California_Carnivores
@California_Carnivores 2 жыл бұрын
You can grow them outdoors in your area year round. You will want to put them where they get full morning sun but a little protection from the afternoon sun in Sacramento. And in the height of summer make sure to always keep the water saucer full.

I ordered a mini bog kit, just wondered if you can plant too many plants in on pot and if there are some varieties that should not be potted together
@California_Carnivores
@California_Carnivores Жыл бұрын
You can fill a pot a little too full so they overcrowd each other and the flytraps don’t get enough sun. Or you’ll have to repot it really soon to allow more space. It would be hard to say how many plants is too many because they can all vary by size a lot. But you’ll want two inches at least between plants!

I want to make a bog, however, I live in Michigan. We have beautiful summers here, but wicked, freezing winters where nothing but perennials survive. Is compacting the soil a concern? Also do you ever have to fertilize?
@California_Carnivores

We always compact it because it’s so wet and it naturally will settle an incredible amount in the pots, leading to roots and crowns being exposed. We do apply a foliar fertilizer once a month during the growing season. We prefer diluted Maxsea!

You can definitely grow these outdoors and they prefer to be outdoors if possible. You’ll want to make sure the saucer is always full of distilled or R/O water on those hot days. @@California_Carnivores thanks for the reply. I take care of reptiles now, some that need 110 on one side of tank and 80 on the other, most of the year then a brumation period where it's 70-80 for a few months. They need heat bulbs, uva and uvb bulbs and all that too. So I was just wondering if a heart lamp and some uv could work then during the needed cold months I could put them outside. We don't get below 20 very often.

@@joshuaglaude1549 The temperate plants can be grown indoors but they like full sun, good airflow and lots of live insects. Because the Sarracenia can be quite tall and the flytraps and sundews quite short, it can be hard to get the grow lights to be strong enough and close enough to the plants without burning the Sarracenia pitchers. In the winter you’ll need to expose them to colder temperatures and shorter photo periods to trigger winter dormancy. I have a whole video on this in my feed!

I want to create a huge (64+ quart) bog garden, and I can't find a water tray big enough for that size planter. If it measures at 20 inches wide roughly how many fly traps, ping, sundews, and american picture plants would be good for it. I know they need room to fill out as they mature. Also I I can't find a water tray that big, do you have any suggestions for how to keep it wet? I intend to put them in the lowest and wettest part of my yard. That being said even a SC wet yard would eventually dry out, so I know I will possibly need another option to keep the bog garden wet. Also I'm doing it as large as I am for a memorial garden.
@California_Carnivores
@California_Carnivores 2 жыл бұрын
That’s a great project! It’s hard to know what to use for a tray. You could do a non-draining bog instead. That may be easier than finding a tray. It’s hard to estimate how many plants to put into it. I would say that each flytrap, drosera and ping will take up about 3” of space to start and then steadily grow in. The Sarracenia can really vary in size but I would assume they will take up more like 4” of space each.

@@California_Carnivores thank you. What would a non draining bog look like? Would I just fill it with tons of spag moss and perlite and plug the drainage wholes? Also thank you for giving me spacing as that can help me figure out how much would be needed.

You can grow temperate plants indoors, under grow lights but it is a bit hard. They need a chilly winter dormancy as well. There are easier plants like Highland Nepenthes, Cape sundews and Mexican butterworts which grow indoors really happily
@WhatIsMisophonia
@WhatIsMisophonia 2 жыл бұрын
I have questions based on my research so far.. Why so much peat? Your mixture wouldn't compress so much if it had more perlite or pumice, and people typically use a 1:1 ratio. Also, have you experimented with long fiber sphagnum(lfs)? It's more expensive but I watched a video recently about an award winning flytrap growing who uses lfs. Finally, flytraps apparently don't like too much water, as they tend to grow a bit higher up further away from boggy conditions than the local pitchers which prefer more water, so I assume this is kind of a one-size-fits-all scenario?

Our methods are based on 30 years of growing experience; we’ve experimented with many different soil mixes and watering methods over the years. We also have customers all over the US, so we get great feedback from them on what works across different growing zones. You can grow your plants beautifully in different mixes, but our recommendations are based on what we do in the nursery and what works best for most people in most growing zones. 😊

@@California_Carnivores With all due respect, and I mean no disrespect because I'm a novice and you may well be sincere, but I don't work off of "we know best". If I did that in the aquarium hobby, or any hobby really, I'd have spent hundreds more dollars than I have and probably not had better results, or I'd just not engage in certain hobbies at all because I don't have the money. I was rather hoping for explanations, honestly.

@@WhatIsMisophonia I can definitely appreciate wanting to know the reasoning behind recommendation (I’ve also grown a planted in aquarium for a decade so I know that hobby as well). Our advice is based on a lot of experiments at the nursery and hands on experience over thirty years of planting and growing thousands of plants. Some of what we recommend is just because it works best from all that observed experience, if that makes sense. You can grow your plants in long fibered sphagnum but we don’t recommend it for a few reasons. All of our advice has to apply to most people in most growing conditions which is variable. Additionally we don’t find the temperate plants to grow any better in it than the peat and it is cost prohibitive. It tends to dry out faster so many people have a hard time keeping their plants wet enough and kill them. You can definitely grow flytraps in long fibered sphagnum moss beautifully but it’s just not something we do or recommend. If you’re curious as to why we recommend a lot of what we recommend, check out our book The Revised Savage Garden. Peter writes a lot of great background information on reasoning behind certain growing methods!
