I told myself I wouldn't, but here I am buying another Walmart Venus Flytrap living inside a death cube. I couldn't help myself, especially after losing one of my flytraps to root rot. Today I'm just going to video while I repot these flytraps and give some general care tips.
I'm seeing more and more people bring home these Walmart Venus flytraps with little to no knowledge of how to care for them. Many think a terrarium is the way to go but it's really not. They are not tropical plants and are actually quite cold hardy. They do not need high humidity but do enjoy to be left in full sun. Watch the video for more Venus Flytrap care tips and some common misconceptions!

@@ColeyCleans Also next time you shouldn’t buy from Lowe’s or other big box stores. They usually leave the plants in terrible condition, so you will get a sick plant that can die, and usually the cultivars are crap. By buying them, you are only encouraging them to stock more on shelves. It’s better to buy from carnivorous plant stores/nurseries or buy them online from nurseries/individuals who can have some really cool varieties and maintain the genetics with tissue cultures. Also you are helping smaller businesses.

This video was incredibly wholesome. I'm going to Walmart tomorrow to get myself one along with some perlite, peat moss, and distilled water! Just a few questions: 1. I've heard that they catch bugs themselves when outside but also that they are only to be fed once a week, so would I have to worry about them "overfeeding" themselves? 2. How often should I water it? I've always thought that you can just put them in a tray of water and just refill it when low. Great video super informative and straight to the point.
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 2 жыл бұрын
I have also heard about overfeeding, however, I have a venus flytrap sitting outside right now that almost always has a fly or insect in every trap and it's thriving. If you put the flytrap outside, you won't ever have to feed it, most likely. They don't actually need the bugs to live. They survive off the sun the insects are more like fertilizer. The only time you really need to feed them is if you keep them indoors and they rarely catch any insects on their own. They are surprisingly efficient at catching bugs all on their own! I wouldn't worry about them overfeeding themselves outside. As for watering, I think my favorite method is to tray water but... I have had flytraps die with tray watering, so you need to be careful. Don't leave a flytrap sitting in a tray of water for more than 2 days. If it doesn't soak it up, it means the plant has all the water it needs. Remove from the tray and allow it to dry out a bit before putting it back in. Top water them once or twice a month, this will flush any nutrients or minerals that have built up in the substrate. The only exception to the water tray staying full is in extreme heat. If you are at 95 F or above, it's okay to leave water in the tray more often. Since the plant will be burning through the water much quicker. Just make sure when the temps go down that you be very careful not to leave it sitting in a tray of water for more than a couple days. They can succumb to crown rot when sitting in stagnant water for too long. Especially in colder weather. Hope this helps Michelle, thank you for your kind words and good luck with your plants!

@@ahmedshallo1587 Usually the plants are in poor condition and they water with high tds tap water, so unless u want to change the soil and all of its conditions to help revitalize it, then dont get it. also it can still die anyways if it’s too late. Usually the variation/cultivar is inferior too. Just buy online or at a nursery where you can pick the cultivars and get them in healthy conditions. Also it’s better to support smaller businesses sometimes.

what kind of discounts or prices do you get your plants for? I worked for a nursery before and we could get 30% off as an employee discount, as well as stack on a 30% during some sales or promotion periods. (Not 60% additive but 30% and then 30% again). So that was a nice time to buy, assuming there were some decent-looking CP plants available at the time of double-stacking like that.

Been growing cp for 20 years and you're giving sound advise in a smooth calming voice. Although old weathered terracotta pots are fine. All the minerals are washed away. Also have you tried using pure quarts sand for any of your American carnivores? Been growing a Leah Wilkerson and lavithan in pure sand outdoors all year here in Bavaria for 3 years now. They grow incredibly! Another reason I switched to sand is birds were stealing the moss and peat from pots and stole all my vft and sundews coming out of dormancy. Tip to those growing cp in long winter areas. Throw them in a tub together and stuff it with hay. They'll live
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the compliment, it means a lot! I have not tried pure quarts sand before. But I also don't have issues with birds stealing peat or moss. Do you also grow your VFT's in pure quarts sand? Next winter, I'm doing exactly that. Overwintering with a tub. From what I can see, winter was harder on my VFT's than I expected. I'm not used to winters this cold. I will have to try something different next year for sure. In a tub with hay for overwintering sounds about right.

@@CarnivorousPlantsHub they really are hands down the easiest/fastest cp to grow under the right water conditions. Grew them under a pine tree that constantly dropped everything into the huge container. In one year I went from 4 turions to 20 lbs of them. Look up Lubomír Adamec if you want the nitty gritty on aquatic cp growth and care. He's heavily involved in the reintroduction of native aldrovanda to the point I couldn't buy any Swiss/German aldros. Northern italy is doing a reintroduction program so I'm on a waiting list for the same. Another person I'd say you sold get to know on FB (starting a fb will help you grow) is Ryan from native exotics in upstate NY. Idk if you’ll see this or not but it’s worth a shot- i got a Venus fly trap from Walmart recently and it seems to be dying. Most of the traps are turning black and some have white mold on them. Should i cut the ones that have mold off, even if they’re still green? Do you think my Venus fly trap is salvageable??
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 2 жыл бұрын
The traps turning black and white mold seems to be an indicator of maybe too much water? Let it dry out just a bit, not completely but more than it has been. Don't leave it in a tray of water, allow the water tray to dry up for a day or two before putting more water in. Try to wipe off the mold with a tissue and cut off all the dead black traps. The dead traps will just continue to create mold and isn't great for the plant. Try to make sure it's getting at least 12 hours of direct sun (not from a window sill) or a strong grow light. The Sansi 36W bulb is a great but affordable one you can get on Amazon. If you can, try to pick a place that might have some better air flow. The mold is usually an indicator that its sitting stagnant. I've dealt with mold a lot, it can be frustrating but is something you can fend off. I think there is a good chance you beat this! Don't cut off the green traps, just try wiping the mold off those.

I just got a wal mart special trap. I live in the north and it can get well into the negatives. I understand these can handle some cold temps, but is that too cold? Should I store them in a cool place inside instead?
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 3 жыл бұрын
This does get tricky, I'm in the north too so I completely understand your dilemma. The below freezing temperatures will kill them if exposed to them for too long. It's important, if possible, to bring them inside a garage or colder room of the house. Ideally it's around 40 degrees and they can still get some light. If it's colder than that then the light isn't as necessary because they go into full dormancy where they aren't growing anymore at all and light isn't really important. Try to keep the rhizomes protected with bark, pine needles or some kind of frost prevention fabric. You can also put them in a cold frame outside. If the temperatures get below 10 degrees that's when I like to put a light source inside of the cold frame or close to the plants. You can put them in a barrel or something you can cover them in and place a light bulb in with them. This isn't for the light but for the little bit of heat the light puts off. It can raise temperatures just enough to keep your plants from being exposed to under 10 degrees. Too many of days with temps that low will almost certainly kill most carnivorous plants, even the very cold hardy ones. I hope that helps! Probably a little overkill for a comment response. Lol! Good Luck!

HI, I had bought a pot with Venus Flytrap off Amazon. Once I got it, it was dead within a week. I decided to get rid of the pot but, I reloaded in a better dirt and within two weeks I got some to grow. I use a spray a few times a day and they love it, I only use distilled water. I do keep water in another pot and put the other one in the jar and it seems to enjoy. This is my first time with Venus Fly Traps. I started with all types of plants and it's a blast in my time, I only use inside near window and good led light that helps. My temp during the night is abought 65 deg and daytime around 75 deg. I do buy cool plants and I love Catus. I made a fish tank and I use charcoal and light gravel and dirt on top. Everything so far seems to be doing okay together plants. I put food on once a week, and they love it so far. Sory for bugging you! BTW, I hope it works well and have a good business. Thanks! P/S I had a stroke, so my reading is slow but, it gives me something I am enjoying.

Hi, I’m from the UK. Just bought my first Flytrap from my local DIY store. I’m going to re pot it, but my question is can I put it straight out in the sun. I watched another KZfaq grower that said as the small plant has been in a store for an unknown amount of time I should slowly introduce it to the outside sun, is this correct or can I put it straight out. Thanks you
@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 2 жыл бұрын
It really is best to acclimate it. However, this can also depend on the strength of the sun. I would not take a store bought VFT and put it in 90 plus degrees F as it will burn and maybe kill the plant. I'd start with 4 hours a day for the first week. Jump to 5 the next and just keep going up from there until it's in full sun. But yes, acclimating it is usually the best way.

Hey Mary! Honestly, the lights needed are probably a little too bright for a desk. It may be possible to use a light that you keep on overnight. I use a Sansi 36W bulb. But it's bright and would be a distraction if it were on my desk. It also produces quite a bit of heat, another thing to consider. They like a lot of sun so need a pretty strong light to be grown indoors.

Aww, that's awesome! Do keep in mind though that Venus Flytraps are tricky and take a little practice. It's not uncommon at all for beginner growers to lose 1 or 2 before they get the hang of it, I know I sure did! So don't be too hard on yourself if for some reason they don't make it. I strongly recommend trying again, once you get the hang of it, you can propagate them and they will duplicate like crazy. More than making up for the couple you lost when learning!

@CarnivorousPlantsHub

Nope! Their primary need for food is sun. If you put then out in sun they will inevitably catch flies and other bugs. The best way it's been explained to me is... They need sun and water to live, bugs are basically fertilizer. They arent necessary but catching bugs will help give the plant the nutrients it needs to grow bigger and stronger. Also, have fun with it! There is no reason why you cant throw a bug your plants way occasionally .

@CarnivorousPlantsHub
@CarnivorousPlantsHub 3 жыл бұрын
Haha. They are a pain, but mostly because they defy conventional plant wisdom. Once you know how to care for them, they aren't so bad. It's not likely you killed your plant, it kind of depends how many dissolved solids you have in your tap water. I've seen tap water be okay for Venus Flytrap and I've seen it be REALLY bad for them, it depends on your location. However, I would get some distilled water and I would flush the plant really well. Make sure it has good drainage and that it's in a peat and perlite mix. Then flush the plant with distilled water 5-10 times, this should help rinse out any nutrients or minerals from the tap water. I wish you luck my friend. They can be kind of a pain, but they really are worth it!

They are actually pretty easy to grow! Plant them in a normal pot with drainage holes. Use sphagnum moss for the “soil.” Definitely not regular potting soil mixes. Set the pot in a water tray or bowl in full sun with distilled water or rainwater no higher that halfway up the pot. That’s it! Keep the water tray from drying out, and you’re good to go.

Just bought 2 today from Walmart! Thank goodness for videos like this one. They are almost entirely rotten. They each had one small mouth on the and some babies starting to sprout. I’ve planted them in 1 part peat moss (couldn’t obtain sphagnum moss today) 1 part perlite Using some distilled water and I’ve got them under a grow light. Right now they are both in a 4 in. Plastic pot. Absolutely anxious, absolutely hoping for their full recovery! These are my first carnivores plants! Other than years ago before I ever had any plants I got one and well it died. Now I have a better understanding, so here’s to plant rescue! 🤙🏼

Just make sure it's a strong enough grow light. They would probably do better outside in full sun. Assuming that's something you can do. If not, just make sure the grow lights put out enough light. I know the Yescom 225's Blue, Red, White are a great option for around $20. I really hope your flytrap snaps out of it and begins to grow! Sometimes these rescues can be tricky. If for some reason it doesn't make it, you should consider buying your next from a reputable grower, like Matt over at flytrapstore.com. It will be a bit pricier but starting off with a healthy plant makes the process a lot more fun! Good luck my friend and here's to your plant coming out healthy and growing big and strong!

@@CarnivorousPlantsHub I possibly can, it’s not the best ever condition for plants outdoors at the moment! Due to smoke from fires all around us. Maybe it wouldn’t harm them too much but for now, I have a pretty fabulous grow light! May still get me some of those yescoms (always looking for other lights to out around the house) So far after about 24 hours they are still looking good, which to me is a good start! I may also go about getting a plant from there as well, I would definitely love a healthy one. I guess I’ve only ever purchased “rescues” the carnivorous plant world is definitely something I want to add to my collection. Thank you so much!

Home Depot usually has pretty healthy traps. Not all the time, but I've seen some really nice big and healthy plants there.

So glad I came across this, I grabbed one from Walmart a few months ago at the beginning of summer (I’m over in Rhode Island) I was going to repot them now and I didn’t know about the whole dormant thing, so I’m hoping I can do it quick so it can snooze away, hopefully it lives through the winter. WISH ME LUCK LOL

Venus flytraps are awesome and I strongly encourage you to grow one. However, if you are trying to find a good carnivorous plant for gnats, a ping is much better. Check this video out! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Y7ajiMqf3MqmYHU.html
