On large steam locomotives a man could not shovel coal fast enough to keep up the head of steam. So they invented an Archimedes screw to feed coal to the fire and jets of air or steam to blow the coal to the different parts of the grate. To save you from the back breaking job of shoveling coal to a boiler, have you thought about making a screw auger to feed your boilers?

Health and safety notice: You should always wear a wet flannel on your head while operating a coal fired boiler. (It's also a good idea to have a friend ready with a watering can in case you start steaming.)

Can't believe I've had my power panel sitting in the corner doing nothing since I went electric. I've spent years carting a battery about for the blower and pumping water into boilers by hand.Best ideas are always obvious - once somebody has told you.

Now you have me wondering how much does a heretic steam, and could they be used as a fuel or propulsion resource? At the very least I suppose the ash would be suitable as amendment in the flower beds, so that's alright then.

If the water/steam mixture is just over 100°C when it's at 30 psi, I suppose that is when the tea whistle should sound hehe.

There is that, but as most of mine are for boats gas is a lot easier. Also whenever I think of coal firering I rememberer a cartoon from one of the magazines that showed a model steamer towing a small rubber raft with the modeler in precariously balance leaning over with a small shovel full of coal to feed the boiler.

Yes - I did the hydraulic test when I first got the boiler . . .

Yes I suppose so, but it's much quicker to use the electric kettle in the kitchen ..... :-)))

Quick Question about the pressure gauge piping... The copper tube seems to form a horizontal “trap”. Might this "trapping" cause a problem with the gauge reading properly? Or becoming plugged-up by old residue left in the trap? (luv all the vids. thanks again for your time and expertise!)

The copper tube is a siphon and fills with water so that the soft soldered inner bellows that make the pressure gauge work doesn't melt ...... no "trapping" is going on ....

Is the gauge glass residue normal or is that also because the boiler is new?

It does happen over time, but in this case it was due to internal contamination of the water. It will improve the more I steam the boiler.

Thanks Keith. Your boiler is very nice. It looks like much more fun playing with coal than just turning on a gas tap. It adds a whole other dimension to the fun you can have.

Well done - ! That is exactly where I think the term comes from as the "Witch" would have been very wet and half drowned from being dropped into the local river , lake or pond before being burnt at the stake .

Actually the expression "steams like a witch" derives from the belief that a witch could not be drowned, and so when she was dragged from the water and burnt at the stake while still wet, she steamed.
