If you are going to milk a cow on your homestead you need a stanchion. A good milk stanchion will keep your cow in place while you milk her, and also be a helpful tool in training a calf, doing medical procedures, and cleaning and caring for your cow.
In todays video we show you step by step how we built the frame for the milking stanchion.
In this video we used
Drill and Impact Driver Set - amzn.to/2LnHeTX
Circular Saw - amzn.to/2NLm5j0
Speed Square - amzn.to/2NKChkR
Drywall Square - amzn.to/2LnjAGR
Bar Holder - amzn.to/2OgU3gv
5 1/2 inch Structural Screws - amzn.to/2uL0sZh
7 1/2 inch Structural Screws - amzn.to/2OfKj6d
4 inch exterior screws - amzn.to/2JVz3IZ
First we build the platform for the stanchion, using 3 4x4's and some 2x6 decking.
Next we build the frame for the cow to be contained with using 4x4's, 2x6's, and 2x4's.
We made the side braces of the stanchion removable so that a well trained cow can be easier to milk, while a young cow in training can be kept in control.
In a follow up video we will show you how to build the head gate for the stanchion, and finally we will show you how it works when we milk our cow for the first time!

Great job! Thanks for sharing. When we built our stanchion we searched you tube and couldn't seem to find one that suited us. We did build a nice one (took us 3 times to get it right lol) but love yours. If we ever do it again you sure have taught a few things to incorporate. Love the brackets 👏. Such a smart idea! God bless yall❤️

Those side rails will come in handy when you start training Luna to milk. Why not start now? Walk her into it with a small treat and soon it will be just a great thing to her, while she is eating her tiny treat rub her and handle her bag and teets to accustom her to the whole process. Then when she is older and a new mom it will not be a new thing coming at her too.

Great video, as always. I love that you always protect your children's ears from noisy devices (I've also noticed that when the kids ride in the Gator or that huge off-road vehicle their grandpa was driving in an earlier video). Plus, your two kids just got a better edumacation than, like, two years of public school math and shop class! (Totally LOL'd at Uncle Bourbon's example of how not to "measure twice, cut once")

All I need to know is length and width which I believe was left out of the video. I realize it depends on the size of the cow but it should be about the same for most cows unless u have a mini (which actually a stanchion for a full size jersey should work as well for a mini I would think)

Those brackets that hold the 2x4's are not cheap on ebay. However, you can buy them cheap in trucks parts section. They make them for putting 2x4's on the box of pickup trucks and they are only a couple of dollars. Hope this helps someone.

Hey you need to Hi5 the dog too. They learn they pretty quick. He looked like he felt left out. Nice job on the stanchion. You need to put it in PDF form so we can buy the plans. PLEASE. Don't forget one for the goats too.

Excellent idea! Some of us LOOOOVE having written instructions, and it'd be nice to have it in a pretty pdf instead of us just writing it down on scrap paper, lol. (Price suggestion: $5)

#askhomesteady My cow is due in early September. What should I have on hand for the birth (medicine & equipment wise)? What should I have here in general for our animals (probiotics, a bolis, what to give the bolisis with, etc.)? I know these are rather large questions, due to the many different components of the answers, but since you have experience in it, I figured I'd ask! Thanks! Jennifer

Uncle Burbon is very handy to have around. Im sure you miss him living close by. I had no idea he was a teacher. With his nickname I just figured he was one of your dads drinking budies. Lol. He was lots of help. Did the kids poop out on you guys. I have no idea how late it got. Lol

I have to build a stanchion so this is awesome. Question: will this be free standing or is it going to be attached to the barn? I ask because I'm concerned about my cow (who hasn't been milked before) freaking out when headlocked and possibly knocking it over if not attached to posts in ground.

Natasha S. You can buy a cattle shoot at a farm store and it has panels you can put down so you can milk. If your worried about your cow being crazy

Natasha, be sure to slowly work up to milking your cow, in little steps day by day. Don't just lock her in the stanchion one day and start milking her! Not that you would, I'm just saying, for anyone who's never done this before: Start by getting her used to you handling her udders, the disinfecting procedure, the sounds of the pail and your seat when they scrape along the ground, and so on. Walk her around the stanchion, show her that the moving board isn't scary, give her some treats and lots of calm praise. This is the best way to teach any animal (or feral child 😉) about something new, but it's especially important when handling a large creature that could hurt you if they freak out.

tyrroo - Yeah, I've been trying to gentle her slowly over the last year, but she is head cow of the herd and knows it. I used to milk goats, but they are so much smaller...this foray into cows has had quite a learning curve! I figure if I can gentle her to milking, I'll have passed a major hurdle. I just worry about her initial response to the headlock. She is such a slave to food I think she'll do alright once she realizes there is a treat involved.

#homesteady ? Question. I don't mean to sound ignorant but I'm always wondering what the reason or use is for goats if the milk is coming from a jersey/ or 🐄? Are people are eating goats? Or milking them also? Or showing the goats at the fair 4H? Possibly using them for clearing wooded areas? I'm just wondering what the use is for having both or maybe they are just for pets? I see a lot of homesteaders that have goats and a family milk cow. I just don't get how it's feasible to feed both unless we're getting something from them. Thanks for your reply. :) As always, I love your channel and watch all the videos.

Those are all good reasons, and more! Many people enjoy goat's milk, to drink or make cheese from, and you can also use it in homemade items like soap or hand lotion. There's also goat meat, once they grow up. The farm kids could definitely show the goats at 4H, if they like that sort of thing. Goats are also extremely cute and fun to watch, they're just so silly and bouncy and they make you laugh all the time. And yes, goats are phenomenal at clearing brush! Some homesteaders will first put goats in an area, to eat up most of the vegetation, and then will put pigs in the same area to turn over the ground as they root around, and then they can even put chickens there to finish it up! Sure beats doing all that work by hand or machine, lol. (Btw, you'll want to use the hashtag #askhomesteady, Austin searches for it specifically. But now I've used it, so you don't need to!)
