The build article has a LOT more details about the process I went through to build this: www.wordsnwood.com/2016/paddle/
I went through a paddle making kick back in 2012, but I was not making video at the time. I got the urge again to build a new paddle and this time I documented the design and build process in detail. It took me about 4 days of part-time work (One Sunday afternoon and three evenings) to get it done.
I like to build paddles by laminating wood together. This saves on wood, and allows me to be creative in combining contrasting wood to achieve a stunning result.
It may be a paddle, and it will get banged on rocks and stuck in the mud and dropped on the ground by a campsite... but I still would like to make it a beautiful creation.
ps: it weighs 1141 grams.

Really nice paddle for something you just slapped together. Let me ask you, what kind of glue do you use? A friend of mine who has built a few paddles uses a two part epoxy. personally, I don't care for mixing epoxies. I just as soon use a carpenters glue. Well done video! Cheers!

Nice paddle would oak be good for shaft? And finally of all the videos I`ve seen your the only guy that used it right after making it thanks.
@Wordsnwood
@Wordsnwood 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Peter. You can use all kinds of wood for the shaft. Spruce, Cherry, Western Red Cedar, Walnut, Basswood... I used oak for my very first paddle simply because I considered it practise, but it actually worked. Red oak is technically a bit too open grained for this, as it can soak up water really easily.

Great video - this will hopeffully motivate me to finish the paddle I already have started. How is the weight with the hardwoods?
@Wordsnwood
@Wordsnwood 7 жыл бұрын
Thank-you, I forgot to include that in the description! It weighs 1141 grams, which I think is pretty good. My wife has a commercial paddle which is 700 grams, but it is almost 10-12" shorter as well. It's lighter than my previous custom paddle. To be truly a featherweight you need to use something like Western Red Cedar for the shaft. Made my son one like that 4 years ago and it was 673 grams, and it was just about as long as mine!

1141. this and other details are in the website article linked in the video description. You can get a lighter paddle if you use something like Western Red cedar for the shaft.
