This year I am exploring vintage quilt blocks and how to make them. The first block I want to explore is the Dresden Plate. I have quilted several of them and even appliqued the plates to background squares, but I have never pieced a Dresden from scratch. I have discovered that it is a lot of fun! Join me and find out for yourself!

Love your hint to start stiching below the line and back stich to avoid the threads dangling at top... 👏 👏 Hint: take a picture of your layout before you start sewing them to avoid confusion... you will a reference pic to use...

Thank you so much for pulling the camera closer! I have a truly hard time trying to see the method used on making quilting patterns. I'm no spring chicken anymore and the eyes are growing old. I have decided to spend my latter years doing what my Mother done....quilting❤

I am new to quilting and I certainly understood everything that you explained. Very organized and thorough. The only thing that I wasn’t sure about was how large the circle template is that you used. I am also elderly, and probably just missed it. thanks a million! Pat😊

Interfacing is best for the middle, all you have to do its iron it down and sew it. I hate hand sewing little things

Hey Susan! I love Dresden plates. I do my centers with fusible interfacing. I draw my circle on interfacing and put fusible to right side of fabric. I then cut out with pinking shears. I split th interfacing and turn right side out. I then fuse centers to plates. I still use a few pins.

That is a great way to applique the circles. I have used that method before, too.

I have seen the Dresden done with round tops and a pointed blade every 4th blade or so, how do get the rounded blades? It is a beautiful block. I really enjoy your tutorials. Thank you for sharing your time and expertise.
@sunrisequiltstudio
@sunrisequiltstudio 3 жыл бұрын
You will have to cut those blades with a rounded point. You can make a template to do that with freezer paper or template plastic. Then to turn the raw edges under, you can do needle turn applique, or turn the edges under and press or glue in place then applique down. You can also sew a piece of lightweight fusible or non-fusible interfacing onto the right side of the plate following the edges with a 1/4" seam allowance, trim off the excess interfacing. Then cut a slit in the center of the interfacing and turn and press, then applique. This may require a video to show the techniques.

@@sunrisequiltstudio I was thinking the best solution was to use interfacing on the rounded tops. It sounds like a lot of work though, beautiful as the block is. I have never seen a pattern for the rounded tops, but if you must make your own, that would explain the reason why. I have so many different blocks that I want to make that aren’t nearly as time consuming as this one, so I think I will put this one on the back burner for now. Thank you so very much for clearly explaining the process. I know your time is valuable and I sincerely appreciate all the help you have given me.

How do you determine the size of the circle?
@sunrisequiltstudio
@sunrisequiltstudio 2 жыл бұрын
You want the center circle to be big enough to cover the blades by 1/4" when you have folded over the edge. Some blade templates come with a circle pattern that you can use that works well with their blade template.
