We used to do that, but now built a big lean to across the back of our barn( south side) for the firewood and closed it in halfway down on the sides with metal and a metal roof. Enough to keep 90% of the now and rain out, yet still let air circulate to season the wood. The metal on top of the firewood stacks is far better than dealing with tarps. :)

I use black roofing rubber (used) to cover my stacks, its heavy so doesn't blow off too easy, it absorbs/released heat of sun helping wood to dry faster and is cheap and easily accessible and you really never gotta worry about ripping it like a tarp

Great idea letting the woods own weight hold everything in place so tightly.

I like idea of using wire to brace t posts. Maybe the wire could go across the top to replace the string and serve both functions?
@herrickkimball2 ай бұрын
Not a bad idea. I’ve done that in years past. The rows have a tendency to sometimes lean off to the side. The angled wire down to the pallet gives the row considerably more stability.
@bradleyjsmithod2 ай бұрын
@@herrickkimball I can see how that would be less stable. When my stacks have fallen, it's usually because the t posts have shifted.

You have great ideas. 12 face cords though? Maybe you can give some advice? I have 800 square feet to heat. How many rick do I need?

Very fine indeed sir. Did you split with a log splitter? Very consistent angles on the wood.
@herrickkimball2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, Yes, I use a log splitter, which I appreciate very much after hand splitting my firewood for so many years! Thanks for the comment. 👍

@@herrickkimball Very cool sir. I'm just getting into splitting wood to feed my fire pit addiction and I find the topic fascinating. Thanks again for sharing your journey.

I'll do the same thing without the wire and I've been doing it for long time myself that's the best way to get your wood dry and mine is pretty darn dry,, I was using concrete blocks on top of my tin but couple weeks ago or so somebody help their self stole my concrete bricks and I know where they're at but proven it that's not worth it

I have no scientific proof that this helps but I'm somewhat convinced it does..... paint your sheet metal black. Draws some heat from the sun. My black tarp, draped down the sides about a foot, is like an oven on sunny days.

I’m not sure I’d stack wood against the house like that. Seems to be inviting rodent and insect problems
@herrickkimball Жыл бұрын
It's possible. I've stacked wood against and very close to my house for many years and have no issues with insects or rodents in the house.
@knotweedkninja85392 жыл бұрын
You should slope your firewood so the rain can run off the sheet metal.

From what I have read and videos I have watched, it is NEVER recommended to stack firewood next to your home. Many recommendations say to go 20 - 40 feet away to stack your firewood. Why, one might ask? TERMITES, a wood pile next to your home is a very strong attraction to draw them in...
@herrickkimball2 жыл бұрын
That's probably wise advice for some locations, but not where I live here in upstate New York state. I worked in the building trades as a home remodeler for 25 years and have never seen termite damage. Thanks for the comment.
