Welcome to my channel, Homes for Beginners where I show you how to do repairs around the house yourself. Please don't forget to hit that LIKE button and SUBSCRIBE for future videos.
In this video I will be showing you how to make a gypsy moth trap using a juice bottle.
We’ve been having an extreme infestation with gypsy moths and caterpillars this past year. Unfortunately, the municipality we live in hasn’t done much to tackle the problem property owners are experiencing, so we’re having to result to our methods.
You may be asking yourself what kind of problems can this insect cause. There is typically a small amount each year which doesn’t have a large impact. In extremely large amounts like we’ve experienced, when in the caterpillar stage, they will eat all the leaves and needles off the trees. Defoliating the trees. This not only looks bad, but it also affects the health of the trees, possibly killing off trees. Beyond that, it also removed food sources and habitats for other animals and insects. From our experience, complete tree defoliation can happen just over a couple of weeks.
I will have a video for tackling the caterpillars and eggs in the future, so be sure to keep an eye out for that.
Reducing the moth stage will help cut back on the fertilization of eggs, reducing the potential amount of caterpillars in the next year.
While traps are available, some are not reusable, can be more expensive, and in our case, all suppliers were sold out.
Using a clear juice bottle with the label removed, this had been washed out and has just under a 2 liter capacity. A smaller bottle can be used too, it’ll just need to be emptied more often.
Next, you’ll also need some heavy string, a drill, and a razor knife.
Cut one hole on each vertical side of the bottle, so four in total. These would be cut in a slot style, enough where the moth can fit through. The high would be about 3/4” or 2 cm. The width of the holes is about 2 inches or 5 cm. These need to be on the upper half of the bottle, about 3/4 of the way up and roughly in the same line. This doesn’t need to be exact.
When done, here you can see the slots.
Next is using about a 1/16” drill bit to make vent holes in the top. This will help with attracting the moths so they can smell the pheromone and prevent any condensation from forming. There are about 15 small holes in the top, again the exact number isn’t critical and this will also vary depending on the size of your bottle. Just make sure you’re not jeopardizing the structure of your bottle.
As a final modification for the bottle is making a hole in the lid. The hole size will be based on the size of the string you’re using. Make sure it’s strong enough to hold the weight of the bottle with a small amount of water in the bottom, along be able to withstand windy conditions.
I’ve already gone ahead and made my string. One side has a stopped knot so it doesn’t pull through the lid and the other has a loop where the lip can fit through.
A small amount of soap has been added to the bottom, this will help reduce the water’s surface tension so the moth becomes trapped easier.
I’d highly recommend wearing gloves for the next step. Here I have female gypsy moth pheromone, so we’ll be attracting male moths in the trap. Male moths are the ones that fly, the females do not fly. If the pheromone gets on your skin, the male moths will follow you.
The pheromone is just a small strip and can be tapped onto the string. This pheromone will need to be replaced yearly. Try to keep as much of the strip as exposed as possible, but so it’s secure enough where it won’t fall in the water.
Once filled up with water and hanging, here it is. There is no more than 2 inches or 5cm of water in the bottom. This will need to be changed whenever it becomes excessively full of moths. The versions on the market are a solid color so some moths can see the light and expect. This makes it difficult for the moths to see the entrance holes so it’s not selective.
The next day, less than 24hrs and after the highest concentration of moths, as you can see it’s filled right up. We’re about a week past their peak. Do not get the pheromone strip wet when cleaning out the bottle, just unscrew the lid, wash out the bottle, then add more of a water and soap mixture.

I used large Margarita mix bottles from Costco and followed the general instructions in the above video. Good results hanging from a branch but when I sat another trap I made in a tray of water (with a few drops of Ivory dish soap) the results were really impressive with approx. 10 moths inside the container and almost 50 in the "moat" outside the container just in one day. This is July 18, 2021 and I am dumping and cleaning traps every day. Thanks to the person who made this video and to the person who suggested the tray of water. Unfortunately now I have a margarita habit.

No problem, happy I could help! Lol, well at least you can say you're having a relaxing summer. Despite our area being sprayed, we're still having quite a few moths floating around. I'm assuming next year will be a problem too.

Appreciate the video! A few weeks ago, I found these small caterpillars ALL OVER the place, including my garage and house! They’ve done a bit a damage to a few of my Apple trees. All of a sudden, they’re dying like crazy! These little carcasses are everywhere! It turns out, the weather conditions we’ve had the last week or so have caused a fungus to grow that they’re susceptible to. We’ve always had a lot of fungus, but never have I been so glad about it. We still have some hanging around, but now that I know what they are and how control them, we are on it. Thanks again for an excellent video. Hopefully, it’s not to late for the Apple trees.

Thank for the video. With a unsuccessful spraying in Maryland I've been using 5oz dawn per gallon of water in my power sprayer killing the caterpillars which works great . Im definitely going to use this method of traping when they start flying around. Maybe with both I can save a few trees in the yard. Thank you again and I'll update you when traps are in use!

I made my own homemade trap but the only lure I could find was one from U-Spray Bugspray which was a little rubber thing. I put the trap out but for 3 days no male moths were even going into or attracted by the trap. When I notified them they told me "As stated in your emails, you DID NOT buy our trap due to the cost but instead, only our LURE. As we explained, our lures can only be used in our traps. True, they cost a lot more but there is a big reason; the lures only work in this design combining the glue pad pattern, the glue (which has special attractants too) and the color/shape of our traps. So using another brand of trap would not work; you need to use our lures in our traps. . Second, our article clearly states these traps should NOT to used for active problems. Essentially the traps are just "monitors" used to alert property owners to any Gypsy Moth activity by pulling in the moths if they're around. And once you start seeing them on or around the trap? It means you need to treat. . Our product page also makes this clear; once you see the moths flying around as you told us you were seeing, it means you need to go to the next step which is to treat. . We also explained that the previous infestations would be delivering a strong pheromone scent, very much like a beacon that would in turn attract moths so strongly, they would never find our traps and if they did, it would not be a significant percentage. As our article explains, when this happens its past the time of using the monitors; its time to treat. . Lastly, our "return" policy clearly states no returns for traps or lures or anything that's opened and used (#3 and #4). In this case you offered to return a used pheromone/lure and we answered by stating used product like this is not returnable as per our company policy. At this time we stand behind that response. . Customer Care U-Spray Bugspray Our lures work and once used, cannot be returned. . FYI, traps/lures are designed to be used as a monitor to alert you of a problem. And if the tree had previous activity from last year? It will be "marked" with all the pheromones left by the previous population so traps won't help; you need to spray. This is covered in our article so what you have happening is expected. I LOVE THEIR STATEMENT THAT THEIR TRAPS ARE NOT TO BE USED FOR ACTIVE PROBLEMS. SO BE WARNED AND DO NOT BUY FROM THEM.

@homesforbeginners
@homesforbeginners 2 жыл бұрын
Depends on when they come out, each year varies. I would recommend having the traps out as soon as you see them flying around or the start of June just to be safe. The pheromone lasts for a year. Actually when I put out this bottle, it had last year's pheromone strip still in there and it was working.

In Canada we buy them from the Urban Nature store. I just check their website and they say they are out of stock for the season.... Update: I just noticed the package is listed as being from Treehelp.com.The Moth Lure is in a small rubber cylindar. It seems to function as the strips in the video did. Careful just blindly buying the lures, they have changed, and are no longer strips but some kind of rubber plug. Not sure how they work yet. I've built 17 traps and bought the lures only to find out they are probably built for the plastic traps they sell in the store. I'm not sure if taping them to a string will work, or if it covers the scent when you do that.
