A simple guide to moth trapping, moth traps and beginners tips on moth identification by Martyn Priestley Wildlife field officer Low Moor & Oakenshaw conservation group.
I explain in simple terms all about moth trapping, what moth equipment is needed, setting the moth trap and tips when opening the trap in the morning.
I have been moth trapping/sugaring/ surveying day time moths and identifying and recording moths for about 20 years.
Filmed in my urban wildlife garden. Learn about moth trapping and moths in your garden from start to finish.
Also I give a brief insight into the best moth books to buy as well as useful moth identification tips .
Why not think about rewilding your garden for the benefit of moths and butterflies with a small or large native wildflower meadow. Dig a wildlife pond to encourage frogs, newts and toads to breed.
With a wildlife pond you will also attract dragonflies, even moths and an array of pond creatures.

My pleasure..glad you enjoyed it..I am a keen birder too and it's like learning all over again. But you will really enjoy it opening the moth trap in the morning full of anticipation, especially if you find a new moth for your garden or area. Cheers Martyn

Good video. Thank you. There are far fewer moths around than there were 10 years ago. I take photos to keep a record of the ones I happen to come across as they shelter in the daytime. On walls near windows usually. Also on tree bark. I've never used a trap like you demonstrate here. It works well. I used to go out at night with a moth book, a powerful light and a white sheet. It certainly got the neighbours talking.

Brilliant...That's how I first started looking for them on walls and windows. It's really good that you keep records as like you say there are fewer moths about nowadays. I think you would really enjoy a moth trap and looking after YOUR moths in your garden...good luck

Thanks Phil...Your right about the drop in moth numbers. Also in years gone by a long car journey would produce a windscreen full of insects...Nowadays hardly any! Good luck with your moth trapping...

Hello, great video. I have been a lepidoptera collector for nearly 50 years and now am going on an epic journey to Pau Pau New Guinea later this year. I wisht to bring a moth trap on the plane across the world but batteries and the complexity of carrying such a thing on planes can be problematic. Do you have any advice?

Hi James..The only safe thing to do is to contact your airline for their guidance and explain all about the batteries. Enjoy
