Instead of having to flip the chisel over to see the 12° line made with the Sharpie, I'd recommend drawing some 12° lines on the piece of MDF so you can align the chisel with those. Then, you just need to keep track grinding to the point of the chisel. If there's concern about inconsistent clamping of the MDF relative to the grinding wheel, add a line at 78° to the 12° lines and in line with the edge of the CBN wheel. Then a straight edge across the wheel will show if the MDF is in the correct clamped position.

Where have you been!!! That's a great idea. Wish I had thought of it. I would have put that in the video

What about doing the first angle, turning the grinder off, pushing the chisel against the wheel and drawing a line on the toolrest. That way you’ve got a reference line for the angle as well as a line for the exact depth of you’re cut. This way it’s easier to make both sides the same.
@deancollins1371
@deancollins1371 2 ай бұрын
@@finnbaaren1751 Actually, I was describing a line for the angle at 12° from the face of the wheel (it also is 78° from the side of the wheel). But, I've also been thinking that a line perpendicular to the 12° lines and 3/4" from the wheel's edge/face intersection would be a reference to where the end of the chisel should be.

I own one of these chisels. I don’t use it very often but I am so glad I spent the money because I don’t think I would even bother trying a half blind dove tail without it.

Brilliant. This couldn't have been better timed. I'm just about to dive into cutting five drawers-worth of half-blind dovetails in 100 year old recycled oak and I wasn't looking forward to fiddling around cleaning out the corners with my 3mm chisel. 60 minutes later I've adapted an old 3/4" chisel and have my own half-blind dovetail chisel ready to go. Thanks!

Note for anyone who may try making one of robs half blind chisels. Do not waste your time or money on the cheap Amazon chisels. They are so soft you'll end up wearing down to the point of not having the original width after a few projects. Not worth the effort on subpar tools. Like Rob says, a good tool allows for good work (or something along those lines) Thank you for sharing your knowledge Rob!

If using pine or something soft, do have 17deg bevel on this dovetail chisel?
@RobCosmanWoodworking
@RobCosmanWoodworking 3 ай бұрын
No, but it would still work. In a half blind you are using this chisel to cut against the gran not with the grain so the 17 degree is not needed

Rob why not just switch the wheel to the other side ? I think if I had to grind one of my IBC chisels like that then I would just purchase a spare blade/furl and ask them to grind it to that shape. I don’t own the wheel.

Just buy the blade and have IBC do the grinding so you don’t have the expense of buying the wheel. Buying the blade is a way to save on a very expensive chisel.

@@RobCosmanWoodworkingthe chisels that I have purchased from IBC are excellent quality and expensive but have never requested them to modify any to date. Brian did let me know that the mortise 17 deg. grind was available but I am happy with their standard grind. My guess is that if I attempted to regrind to the dovetail style you show might void the warranty. The next time that I reorder chisels,I’ll discuss it with Brian but at this time but I have no need for that pattern you are grinding. I will definitely let you know when I find out. Always enjoy your videos.🇨🇦👍👨‍🦳
