Well, you can probably reuse that scoby in as many bottles of homemade Kombucha as you want, so just make it once and never buy Kombucha again?

Exactly, you don’t need the “scoby” just raw kombucha. What he shows is the pellicle not the scoby. Pellicle is just the byproduct and the proof the process is working, you don’t need to keep it or reuse it.

You can do kombucha without adding the starter starch (which is the bottle of store brought kombucha) but this process is longer in time and is more complex 😂😂😂

Hi Manel, there are ways to achieve this with yeasts and lactic acid bacteria, but it's a much longer and more complex process and one I haven't experimented with myself yet, so I can't recommend the best way, unfortunately. Some companies ship kombucha SCOBYs internationally, fresh or in a dried state. Maybe that would work? You then only have to revive the scoby and from there on you can make fresh badges of kombucha :)

you can make a scoby with wine, hydrogen peroxide will neutralize the sulfates present as a preservative and left out in the open for a while will eventually grow a scoby.

--- I was tempted to hit the dislike button. You did not mention how much tea or sugar to use. Kombucha tea is best made with black or green tea. You did not mention how long and where to let it sit, and you did not mention second fermentation. You may want to remake this video with that info. Otherwise there really is nothing to learn here for the person who is trying to make this. This is a good video, just missing some important information.

@dogcatfamily2476 fruit flies / gnats are really attracted to fermentation, they can fit through any number of layers of cheesecloth. Dust and general environmental things can also end up in your brew. I live in an area with a lot of things I need to be concerned about entering my brew, and have never had a mishap once I switched to using plain cotton. I have since upgraded to the material surgical masks are made of

At room temperature, it should be stored with a cloth so that the scoby gets some air. If there's no mold visible, make a batch and see if the liquid still ferments :) If it stays sweet and doesn't turn sour at all, then you might need to start over.
