Raising your own queens is not difficult, and this video shows a simple way to protect your breeder queen and enable you to take larvae when needed for grafting.

Hello Phil! I wanted to come here and comment. I noticed your logical and intelligent comment on a recent Barnyard Bees video regarding the 1:1 sugar syrup mix. I was impressed that a man of your intelligence and ilk watches that particular channel. Bravo for your attempt at reasoning with him, and I agree with you. He's blocked all of my comments as he does not welcome intelligent discourse. Stay the course my friend, we need more voices of reason in beekeeping. This video bears that out. I appreciate you!

I build 3 frame double nucs like that for mating purposes. When fall get here I sell the queen out of the north entrance side slide to top covers apart so they can touch but not cross over for 3 days to pass the queen right sides pheromones over to the queen less side then I pull the divider plug the queen less sides entrance and I have a 6 frame to go through winter in.

Hi Phil, I am new to bee keeping ( only started last year) and I am wondering what treatment do you use for varroa mite? I have top bar hives and I am considering getting Apivar strips (I tried VarroMed last autumn), but I am not sure when I should do it. The recommendations for the instructions say "supers must not be on the hives", but that 's for a ordinary hive, so how am I supposed to do it for a top bar? I would be very interested in reading what you have to say about this. Many thanks.

I don't use any treatments for mites. I rely on making splits and natural brood breaks. Also see my ZEST hive videos, showing the use of humidity control as a Varroa deterrent.

Brush the bees off you are sliding the larvae to the wall of the cell making it harder to graft
